Redskins request to interview Giants DC Perry Fewell

The Redskins are reportedly showing interest in Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to replace fired head coach Mike Shanahan.

The Washington Redskins have requested to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, ESPN's Josina Anderson reports. Fewell has been in charge of the Giants' defense for the last four seasons.

Despite a disappointing overall record for the Giants this season, the defense still held its own. The unit was top 10 in terms of total defense, holding opponents to 332.3 yards per game. Fewell became something of a household name in 2012, when the Giants clamped down in the postseason on the way to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.

Fewell's was arguably a hotter name last year. In 2012, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com listed Fewell among the top new head coaching candidates for 2013. Jeremiah's prediction didn't come to fruition, and after a 7-9 season Fewell's star may have lost some of its shine.

Fewell would certainly bring familiarity with the NFC East to the Redskins. He has little head coaching experience, however. His experience is limited to a seven-game interim stint in place of Dick Jauron with the Buffalo Bills in 2009. Fewell acquitted himself well, however, leading a bad Bills team to a 3-4 regular season finish.
