Jim Haslett will stay on as Redskins' defensive coordinator

USA TODAY Sports

Despite another subpar performance from Washington's defense in 2013, Haslett will keep his position under new head coach Jay Gruden.

The Washington Redskins have seen turnover at head coach and offensive coordinator in the last week, but they'll have some consistency on defense heading into the offseason. Recently hired head coach Jay Gruden announced Friday that the team will retain Jim Haslett as defensive coordinator, according to The Washington Post's Mark Maske.

Haslett was originally hired in 2010 by Mike Shanahan, who was fired by the Redskins after a drama-filled 3-13 season.

While the decision has been rumored since Gruden was hired, the move is somewhat surprising given Washington's defensive struggles under Haslett. They finished second to last in scoring defense in 2013, surrendering an average of 29.9 points per contest. They were in the bottom half of total yards allowed, passing yards and running yards.

They were even worse the year previous, finishing 28th in the league in total defense in 2012. In fact, Haslett's unit has ranked in the upper half of the league in total defense just once during his four seasons in Washington (a 13th-place finish in 2011).

The Redskins promoted tight ends coach Sean McVay to offensive coordinator on Tuesday.
