Peyton Manning sets Super Bowl record for completions in Broncos blowout loss

Christian Petersen

Is this the most meaningless Super Bowl record ever?

It's absolutely no consolation, but Peyton Manning has set a Super Bowl record for most completions with 33. Manning and the Broncos have been forced to throw the ball all over the field as they attempt a miracle second-half comeback, but this is going to finish as one of the top 10 blowouts in Super Bowl history.

Manning broke the record midway through the fourth quarter with the Broncos down 35 points, so it's hard to imagine he even knew he was on such a pace. Demaryius Thomas had already set the Super Bowl record for the most receptions in a game, pulling in 12 prior to Manning setting his own record.

Peyton is currently 33 for 47 for 266 yards and a touchdown, but the most important mark on his stat line is the pair of ugly first-half interceptions. Those picks ignited the dominant defensive night for Seattle, and Malcolm Smith's long pick-six completely opened things up for the Seahawks. Coincidentally, Manning broke a record held by two of his contemporaries:

The assembled press hands assigned the record the weight you might expect:

Denver had a record-setting offense this season, but the Thomas and Manning records are ones they probably wish they hadn't set.
