Mike Mayock's NFL Draft rankings: Johnny Manziel is the top quarterback

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

After Teddy Bridgewater long held the top spot on Mike Mayock's draft rankings, he has been passed by Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel as the best quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Johnny Manziel's unique pro day that featured pads and a helmet evidently made a solid impression on NFL Network's Mike Mayock, who bumped the former Heisman Trophy winner to the top spot on his quarterback rankings. Also moving up the board was UCF's Blake Bortles from No. 3 to No. 2, which may mean the shift meant less about the positive performances of Manziel and Bortles, and more about the underwhelming showing of Teddy Bridgewater.

After spending the entire offseason as Mayock's top rated passer, the NFL Network analyst said Bridgewater had an "average at best" showing at the Louisville Pro Day. While he remains at the top of the SB Nation passer rankings, the subpar pro day meant a tumble from the top spot to No. 3 on Mayock's board.

5 AJ McCarron (Alabama) AJ McCarron/Jimmy Garoppolo AJ McCarron/Jimmy Garoppolo Zach Mettenberger (LSU)

While the move from Bridgewater was a significant one, the rest of Mayock's positional rankings mostly stayed the same. Seven positions, including defensive end, offensive tackle and wide receiver, featured no movement in the top five for Mayock and the safety position was the only other position that had a new No. 1.

It was another Louisville Cardinals player taking the tumble too, as Calvin Pryor lost the top spot that he had held in each of the first two editions of Mayock's rankings. Instead, Alabama's Ha Ha Clinton-Dix now holds the top spot, as Mayock's rankings now closely resemble the one's created by SB Nation's Dan Kadar.

Other changes in Mayock's rankings from the beginning to end of March include Clemson's Brandon Thomas ranked No. 3 on his guard rankings after being unranked previously as well as Virginia Tech's Kyle Fuller passing Oklahoma State's Justin Gilbert as the No. 2 cornerback.
