NFL Draft results 2014: Austin Seferian-Jenkins selected by Buccaneers

Joe Nicholson-US PRESSWIRE

Austin Seferian-Jenkins is now the second tight end taken in the NFL Draft.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have drafted tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins with the No. 38 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. Seferian-Jenkins was ranked No. 45 on SB Nation's top 200 big board and No. 3 among all tight ends, below only Eric Ebron of North Carolina and Jace Amaro of Texas Tech. Ebron was the only tight end to get drafted in the first round, going to the Detroit Lions at No. 10. Seferian-Jenkins is the second tight end drafted, ahead of Amaro.

Seferian-Jenkins was named a first-team Freshman All-American in 2011, second-team All-Pac-12 in both 2012 and 2013, and third-team AP All-American in 2012. He had a productive three seasons with Washington, putting up 146 receptions for 1,840 yards with 21 touchdowns. In his final year, he won the John Mackey Award, given annually to college football's top tight end. His best season was 2012, however, as he put up 69 receptions for 852 yards and seven touchdowns.

His career receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns were all school records for players at his position.

Unfortunately, Seferian-Jenkins could not participate in anything beyond the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine. He intended to, but a stress fracture was discovered during medical evaluations at the combine. As such, he had to undergo surgery and also had to miss out on his pro day.

Fortunately, it's Seferian-Jenkins' athleticism that's ranked him so highly throughout this process. At 6'5 and 262 pounds, he's a big-bodied guy but has never been called "slow" in any credible scouting report we were able to find. His biggest concern is that his production dropped between his sophomore and junior seasons.
