Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III has avoided a fractured ankle, according to a report by The Washington Post's Mike Jones.
UPDATE: Griffin will be sidelined six to eight weeks, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The team cannot place him on IR designated to return because it's already been used on another player. The team later said it would not put a timetable on Griffin's return.
On a scramble during Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Griffin came down awkwardly on his ankle as he reached the sideline. The former Heisman winner was in obvious pain as the team's medical staff attended to him. He had to be carted off with an air cast placed around the ankle.
Though many assumed Griffin suffered a broken ankle, it now appears he'll return sometime this year. Washington has yet to announce the official diagnosis, but those details are expected to come out during the team's 3 p.m. ET press conference Monday. Pro Football Talk reported Sunday evening that Griffin will miss only four to five weeks. If that timetable proves accurate, he could return for Washington's Week 7 game against the Tennessee Titans or Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys.
