Giants vs. Eagles

Game Preview

The Giants and Eagles close out the Thursday Night Football slate this season with New York looking for a series sweep on the road.

At 5-9, there’s not much Philadelphia can play for, although it can help delay a playoff berth for its division rival. New York (10-4) simply needs a victory or a tie on Thursday to secure its first trip to the playoffs since winning Super Bowl XLVI. Should the Giants lose, they can still clinch a playoff spot with a loss or tie by the LionsPackers or Buccaneers, or a loss by the Falcons.

That being said, no team wants to lose control of its own destiny toward the end of the year, and certainly not one that’s been playing as well as New York has recently. The Giants have won eight of their last nine games — including a 28-23 victory over Philadelphia in early November.

Eli Manning threw for 257 yards and four touchdowns in that matchup while keeping the Eagles at arm’s length all game. Carson Wentz did throw for 364 yards, however he attempted 47 passes (completing just 27) with no touchdowns. Perhaps more problematic for Philadelphia now is the fact that the Giants have only grown stronger since November. Manning has thrown the seventh-most touchdowns in the league (25) and has more weapons than he knows what to do with at wideout. Odell Beckham Jr. has four scores in the last four games, while rookie Sterling Shepard has five touchdowns in his last seven games. It’s a tough aerial attack for most teams to stop, never mind that Philadelphia is tied for the 11th-most receiving touchdowns allowed (23).

The one thing the Giants should be worried about is the Eagles' willingness to take unnecessary risks on Thursday. Philadelphia had a chance to take the Ravens to overtime last week but attempted a two-point conversion for the win instead of kicking a PAT. It’s that type of decision-making Ben McAdoo and Co. will have to be prepared for.
