East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Fresh off being named the New York Jets starting quarterback for 2009, Mark Sanchez played like one, throwing for 149 yards and a 31-yard TD pass in the Jets' 27-25 victory against the Giants in the annual preseason battle between the Meadowlands' two home occupants.
Sanchez was 13-of-20 passing and led the first-team offense well into the third quarter, exiting with a 20-13 lead. Chansi Stuckey made four grabs for 69 yards and hauled in Sanchez's lone TD toss.
Aundrae Allison and third-string QB Erik Ainge hooked up for a 70-yard score late in the fourth quarter to help seal a Jets win, their first of the preseason. Thomas Jones had a one-yard scoring plunge and Leon Washington gained 62 yards on nine carries.
Eli Manning tossed a first-quarter TD pass to Brandon Jacobs, but finished 9- of-21 passing for 91 yards and also threw an interception for the Giants, who scored just three points in a loss to the Bears last Saturday and fell to 1-2 in preseason play.
David Carr took over for Manning late in the third quarter and was sharp on 12-of-17 efficiency, accumulating 181 passing yards and a pair of fourth- quarter TD strikes to rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks. The North Carolina product broke out for a whopping 144 receiving yards on six receptions with scores of 71 and 22 yards. Mario Manningham totaled four catches for 41 yards.
No Giants wideout had more than three catches during the 2009 preseason entering Saturday's loss.
Manning's eight-yard TD to Jacobs opened the scoring, and following Jones' one-yard score, Lawrence Tynes kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Giants a 10-7 lead after 15 minutes.
Tynes booted a 26-yarder to open the second, but Sanchez hit Stuckey for a touchdown as the Jets moved in front 14-13. Jay Feely extended the lead to 17-13 with a 42-yard field goal before halftime.
Feely hit from 25 yards for the third quarter's lone score, setting up a wild fourth quarter.
Carr found Nicks for a 22-yard TD strike to get within one, the first of two for the duo, to complete a 99-yard, 14-play march with a little over four minutes left to play. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
However, the Jets needed just one play to go back in front as Ainge and Allison connected for a 70-yard score.
Carr and Nicks then did the Jets one-yard better with a 71-yard scoring play to draw within two, but again the two-point conversion failed and with just 2 1/2 minutes to go.
