But poor DeSean Jackson already has been tried and convicted by those who automatically bristle whenever a player dares to be different.

Celek has three performances of more than 100 yards in his last 10 games. That’s more games over 100 yards in his last 10 games than Eagles tight ends had in the previous 309 games dating back to the 1990 playoffs. The quote of the week has to come from Chiefs safety Mike Brown.

"We prepared, but you can't simulate the way they do it," said strong safety Mike Brown. "They kicked our [butts] today. That's the bottom line. Just think if they had [Donovan] McNabb and [Brian] Westbrook. They've got some Pro Bowl players over there."

Kevin Kolb on the experience of starting the past two games

"Well, it's just confidence that you can get it done at this level in a game-time situation in the regular season. And although you believe it before, nobody truly knows. And that's why there's so much doubt in the air always with a young player. Hopefully I'll put the past behind me with the mistakes I made before. Michael Vick on how he thought he played

"I think I played fairly well. I think I made good decisions with the plays that I had. I missed one ball across the middle. I feel like I could have hit that. I guess I just have to make sure I keep my arm warm on the sideline so when I go in there I'm not cold. Other than that, I made good decisions with the ball. My focus primarily was to be smart and not turn the ball over."

Randall Cunningham spoke about being inducted into the Eagles honor roll

"I'm very honored that Mr. Lurie would consider me. To be able to get into the Honor Roll is a blessing. I went out and saw some of the guys that have been inducted, and it was great to see Jerome Brown and Reggie [White] and other players, but to go in with Al [Wistert] is awesome because I'm 46, and to be sitting here with Al is just a pleasure. I think about my son being able to be here. If you guys remember during the Dallas playoff game, we were having him and I didn't get to go to practice, but now he gets to share in this with my daughters Vashti and Grace, and my sons [Christian and Randall] who are in the other room along with my brother [former NFL running back] Sam-Bam [Cunningham], and with my wife [Felicity] and my aunt.. It's a pleasure just to come back to Philadelphia and to step on the field with Al. It's an honor to receive something like this. This is my Hall of Fame. I'm satisfied now."

Omar Gaither was a little puzzled by the Chiefs' game plan when they were down big

"(RB Larry) Johnson is their workhorse. Honestly, I was surprised a little bit. They run the ball a lot but they ran the ball much more than I thought they would with the score being what it was."

Chiefs' HC Todd Haley explained why the team kept running the ball despite being blown out

"I think to be the team that we want to be we are going to have to be able to run the ball even when they have too many up there. We are trying to win the game, but at the same time we are trying to establish an identity around here. Three yards of rushing offense at halftime, to me, is unacceptable. It was not something that I thought at the time I could let go at the wayside with our offense. Again, we are trying to establish an identity around here. You can call it conservative if you want. I think it had a purpose as far as myself and the team goes, and I will leave it at that."

Eagles' C Jamaal Jackson didn't like WR Desean Jackson's front flip into split end zone celebration

"I told him, 'Great run, but let's try to exhibit some professionalism,' " the Eagles' center said. "There's nothing wrong with a little celebration, but once you put your body at risk, that's when you want to take a step back and look at the big picture. There's nothing wrong with just handing the ball to the ref."

Finally, Michael Vick said that what we saw from him in the wildcat is just the start...

"We have so much still for the future," Vick said. "We just wanted to go out there and get some looks and see how they were going to play and not tip our hand to what we really wanted to do with this Wildcat thing. We've got a lot of different variations and it's going to be exciting, and I just want to contribute."

The $60,000 touchdown celebration

Remember the little celebration led by Desean Jackson after Brent Celek caught a TD on Sunday? Well, Jackson and 5 other Eagles were fined 10k a piece by the NFL. Here's the $60,000 celebration.

The guy who got it worst here has to be Kevin Curtis, who barely participates... Jamaal Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Stacy Andrews and Alex Smith were also fined.

Defensive Key Matchups: Panthers vs Eagles

When looking at the key match-ups from week to week it is easy to always pick the big names (Peppers, Gamble, Beason), which I try to shy away from, instead choosing players that I think will have to step up their game for the Panthers to win. Yet saying it's the first game of the season I thought I'd start with the usual suspects as there are plenty of questions to go around.

1. DE Julius Peppers vs T Jason Peters

After the offseason showdown, and now receiving $1+ million per game, everyone is expecting Peppers to produce. He lack of production during the preseason is a concern. He has stated he prefers to lead by example instead of words. Well, now is the time to produce and lead in his own way.

He will primarily line up against All-Pro LT Jason Peters. Peters was acquired from the Bills during the offseason and although he gave up a league high 11.5 sacks last season, he will be formidable first opponent for Peppers. The Eagles have a great line coach in Juan Castillo, having coached four lineman to the Pro Bowl in his career. He has also has created several offensive line starters from rookie free agents, including current start C Jamaal Jackson. Jason Peters was already good, but his coach could make him that much better.

However, also starting Sunday on the other side of their line is backup T Winston Justice. The regular start, Shawn Andrews, is out with back problems. Justice is a very questionable in his ability and whoever plays left end, or if Peppers moves to LE during the game, could be poised for a big day.

Peppers is on a short leash with the fans and he will need a stellar performance to hold of his detractors.

2. MLB Jon Beason vs RB Brian Westbrook / TE Brent Celek

Beason is on the list because he's been injured and is the leader of the defense and we all know the D didn't look strong during the preseason. They say they are ready to play and that they haven't all played together won't make a difference and they feel confident at with their abilities. There will be a lot of hard games this year but Beason will have a lot to watch for during this first game.

With the west coast offense the Eagles use, the short yardage passes could definitely cause problems. Westbrook is a key player for the Eagles. His durability has been questioned saying he hasn't completed a full season of games in his career. He had two offseason knee surgeries and just turn 30, the magical age for RB. However, since he is used often in screen it will probably be a bigger match up with LB Thomas Davis.

Another concern for Beason will be new starter TE Brent Celek. This is his second NFL season and there are indications he could be a significant fixture in their plans. Beason will have to account for him coming across the middle as well as protecting against the run.

3. CB Chris Gamble vs WR DeSean Jackson

Gamble received a huge contract at the end of last season. During the preseason he didn't play like a quality starter, let alone a shutdown corner that he is now paid to be. Some of this falls on the defensive scheme, playing soft zones, but there is no question he was badly beaten during the Baltimore game. If the Panthers expect to win on Sunday, Gamble will have to have a much better game.

To do so he will have to face second year WR DeSean Jackson, who last year broke the Eagles rookie receiving records for total yards and their leading receiver in 2008. With a year under his belt he is expected to fill a huge role in the Eagles plans.

Like Peppers, the fans are looking for Gamble to play up to his contract or we won't be happy about it.

4. Panthers DTs vs RB Brian Westbrook

Not that Westbrook is known as a power runner but saying our middle has some large (pun intended) questions it could be several games into the season before we truly know how they will perform. If the Eagles don't test the the middle of our defensive line, I would seriously question their game prep. Until our DT's prove themselves on the field, every team is going to press the middle. If our they don't play well it will be a long night and season.

However, the Eagles will also be missing their starting LG Todd Herremans. It is being reported that backup C Nick Cole will most likely replace him. Yet Cole is also on the injury report as probable. I don't know much about Cole, but the Eagles though enough of him to offer him a restricted FA contract that he signed. Saying the Eagles offensive line is a mess it could be just enough for our defensive line to look okay and take care of business this week. Also giving new DT Loius Leonard and Re'Shon Harris a week to get their feet under them.

5. CB Richard Marshall

Marshall was suppose to be the only new starter until Kemo was injured. Many are happy to forget the player that he is replacing, but Marshall is still an unproven starter and will have to prove his abilities on the field. Unless they always put Gamble across from Jackson, Marshall will see his share of him as well. This is his chance to shine and we will all be watching closely.

Basically take your pick this week about which defensive player you have questions about and most likely they are valid. But these are the one I think will be the most important this week as we prepare to start our season on a positive note.

Eagles' D Struggles in Preseason Loss to Colts
"I don’t even know how to put it into words. That wasn’t Eagles defense, that wasn’t what we are about right there," safety Quintin Mikell said. "We need to work on a lot of things. This is the next installment in our series of 12 positions in 12 days previewing the upcoming Eagles training camp. Rookie and selected vets report to Lehigh July 26th and each day leading up to that date we will bring you a preview of a different position battle.

With the offense behind us it's time to move onto the defense. We start today with the defensive tackles.

The Bodies

Brodrick Bunkley, Jervonte Jackson, Dan Klecko, Trevor Laws, Mike Patterson

I'll also add Darren Howard and Victor Abiamiri to the list. Neither are DTs, but both will spend some time playing inside in certain packages.

Presumed Starters

There's not too many starting jobs up for grab on this Eagles team and DT isn't one. Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley will start after a very solid 2008 that saw the Eagles defense finish 3rd overall and 4th against the run. While Bunkley and Patterson didn't provide much of a pass rush combining for just 2.5 sacks, but they did prove to be immovable objects in the run game and freed up the linebackers to make plays. There's little doubt that the development of a guy like Stewart Bradley last year was partly due to the fact that the two DTs kept blockers off him.

As a pair, Bunkley and Patterson trailed only the Williamses in Minnesota in total tackles.

New additions

Jervonte Jackson, brother of center Jamaal Jackson, was signed as an undrafted free agent.

Dan Klecko isn't a new addition, but he's back to being a DT after finishing last year as a fullback.

What to watch for

This camp is going to be about what guys can fill different roles on the interior of the defensive line. Last year when he started the year at DT, Dan Klecko did a nice job as a situational pass rusher. Can he provide that spark again?

Darren Howard actually led the Eagles in sacks last year, many of which came when he lined up at DT in pass situations. It will be interesting to see how much of that success he can replicate this year and if anyone else can fit into that role. The prime candidate would be Victor Abiamiri, who did have some success in the second half last year lining up both inside and out. However, Abiamiri should be fighting for a starting job at DE, so the focus will be on guys like Klecko and second year man Trevor Laws to spell the starters.

The big uglies. The trenches... That's where we look to today as we take on the interior of the Eagles offensive line. Center and Guard.

The Bodies

Stacy Andrews, Nick Cole, Mike Gibson, Paul Fanaika, Todd Herremans, Jamaal Jackson, Max Jean-Gilles, Mike McGlynn, Fenuki Tupou, Chris Patrick. (Tupou & Patrick are listed as OTs, but they'll probably compete at several spots on the line)

Presumed starters

Stacy Andrews(RG), Jamaal Jackson(C), Todd Herremans(LG). Assuming all are healthy, it's pretty unlikely that any of these three won't be starting this year. The only real question is the knee of Stacy Andrews. He tore his ACL last year and had surgery in early January. Whether he'll be 100% ready to go by the time the season starts is not sure.

New additions

Stacy Andrews signed as a free agent from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Paul Fanaika was drafted in the 7th round & Fenuki Tupou was drafted in the 5th this year.

What to watch for

There's a lot of capable players and new draft picks fighting for a precious few spots on the interior of the Eagles offensive line. Nick Cole, being able to play C or G is probably a shoe in to make it... Max Jean-Gilles is the most senior member of the group fighting for backup jobs. However, Gilles broke his fibula last year in the Thanksgiving game against Arizona and it will be interesting to see how he's recovered and whether the injury will bother him in camp.

A guy I'll have my eye on is second year man Mike McGlynn. McGlynn was a 4th round pick last year and his nasty demeanor on the field drew comparisons to Jon Runyan. Having spent a year in the system with offensive line coach Juan Castillo, I'm excited to see how how McGlynn's development is progressing.

Another second year man to keep an eye on is Mike Gibson, who was spending time learning both guard and center last year. Jamaal Jackson and Nick Cole have generally been the only centers in camp in recent years and it will nice to see some more competition in there.

All that said, the #1 storyline is going to be the health of Stacy Andrews. If he's not going ot be ready to start the season, the likes of Jean-Gilles & McGlynn will be fighting for starting jobs... not backup positions.

The Sporting News along with RealScouts.com has been writing up various lists of their top 20 NFL players at every position. Most lists have Eagles on them. Here's what they've got so far.

Donovan McNabb is the 7th ranked QB

7. Donovan McNabb, Eagles. Contrary to those who think McNabb is on the decline, he set a personal career high in passing yards last year and the 23 touchdowns were his most since 2004. McNabb still has a strong, accurate arm, so this season looks promising. The line has been upgraded significantly, and potential impact players have been added at the skill positions.

Jamaal Jackson is the 5th ranked center

5. Jamaal Jackson, Eagles. As Eagles' coach Andy Reid shuffled the line in the offseason, he certainly didn't even think of moving away from Jackson. He's an immovable object in the middle of the line at 330 pounds, but he also has impressive athleticism. He gets off the snap and reaches the defensive tackle quickly, and he can pull and seal the corner for perimeter runs. He'll be even better in '09, leading an improved line that added Jason Peters and Stacy Andrews.

Brent Celek sneaks in as the 19th ranked TE

19. Brent Celek, Eagles. After spending time in Smith's shadow, Celek takes over as the starter. Celek has soft hands and is athletic and fast enough to be a threat down the seam. This offense still runs through RB Brian Westbrook. An improved line, a healthy Westbrook and dangerous perimeter threats should allow Celek opportunities to make an impact in '09.

Jason Peters is ranked as the #3 offensive tackle in the NFL

3. Jason Peters, Eagles. Peters got some bad advice on his contract issues last year in Buffalo. As a result, he missed a lot of practice time and it showed in his play. Now that he has a long-term deal in Philly, all that is behind him and he can focus on returning to the form that made him one of the top young linemen in the league.

The Eagles have two guards amongst the sites' top 20 and it's the Andrews brothers

4. Shawn Andrews, Eagles: Right now the Eagles are trying Andrews at right tackle. He has the athleticism to pull off that move, but he is a three-time Pro Bowl selection as a guard. He has tremendous size and athletic ability. He can dominate as a straight-ahead run blocker, but he also has the lateral movement skills to play in space. It seems he is over his injuries and bout with depression and could see a return to form playing with an improved unit this year.

Though he played right tackle in Cincinnati and got paid tackle money to come to Philly, he's been moved to right guard in the early going, and that's probably not a bad move. Though he played well outside, his 345-pound frame will serve him well on the interior. Everything about him is big, from his body, to his hands, to his height and long arms. He plays with power and can dominate as a short area blocker.

No Eagles managed to make TSN's top 20 WRs in the NFL. Yet...

The NY Times did an interesting piece on Shawn Andrews and his ongoing battle with depression. It's a pretty revealing piece about his life and what happened with him last year. Obviously, this is something Shawn will always deal with, but the fact that he's back and talking about it can only be a positive sign. (NY Times)
