Ending The Bye Week Blues

It's been a rough fortnight for me, Packer fans. Not only did Green Bay lose round one of FavreFest 2009 (while watching Jared Allen and his lame-unless-he-was-on-your-team stirring sack celebration), but they headed into the bye week at 2-2, re-signed an old favorite who may or may not be ready to play, and draw a feisty Detroit Lions team that looks like it's charging back towards middle-of-the-pack status.

So there's that whole deal. Combine that with the fact that the Milwaukee Bucks are wrapping up their preseason (and Brandon Jennings looks even less ready than we thought he would), the World Series is shaping up to be a showdown between the Dodgers and Yankees (after yet another disappointing Brewers campaign), and hockey is less important to me than the price of high heels in Sri Lanka, and you can see that it's a tough time for a Wisconsin-native sports fan. Even my fantasy teams are imploding (1-4 and 2-3 in the leagues that matter).

It's tough to lose your last game before a bye week. It gives you an awful taste in your mouth about your chances afterwards. But then I remember that the Packers are playing the Lions at Lambeau this week. That makes me feel slightly better.

DET rushing vs. GB defense: Every time I think of the Detroit running backs, I think of Kevin Smith, and every time I think of Kevin Smith, I think of Clerks 2, and every time I think of Clerks 2, I think of the scene where Randal and Elias debate which trilogy was better: Lord of the Rings or Star Wars (definitely NSFW). Specifically, I think of the part where Randal reenacts the LOTR movies by simply...walking.

That scene is oddly parallel to the story of Detroit's run game. Detroit's top 4 running backs (Smith, Maurice Morris, Aaron Brown, and Jerome Felton) are averaging less than 3.6 yards per carry. Not that we're used to dominant running performances around these parts, but Kevin Smith and his 3.1 average (287 yards on 94 carries) does not strike fear into opposing defenses.

It's not even that Kevin Smith is a below-average running back. He has good size (6'1", 217), and excellent speed and agility. He regularly breaks off 10+ yard runs, and is even a decent pass catcher (19 receptions for 143 yards). But his line is giving him no help.

Jeff Backus (6'5", 305) and Gosder Cherilus (6'7", 325) are capable bookends (especially Cherilus, who is a nasty run blocker), but the interior linemen, Daniel Loper (6'6", 320), Dominic Raiola (6'1", 295), and Stephen Peterman (6'4", 323) simply aren't able to move defenders and open running lanes. Smith is the type of running back that needs space to gain momentum and use his second gear, but he can't get started because he's constantly running into brick walls.

Green Bay has fared well this season against opposing running backs. Besides Cedric Benson (who has looked every bit like the player Chicago wanted him to be, including breaking Baltimore's streak of 39 games without allowing 100+ rushing yards to a single player), the Packers have effectively bottled up opposing running backs. As a team, Green Bay is only allowing 3.5 yards per attempt, in no small part because of the "Big Okie" formation that puts 5 linebackers on the field, allowing effective pursuit to the ball, stringing plays out to the sideline, and cutting off gaps. Brandon Chillar is a surprise tackling leader this season (26 on the year), but 7 other players in the front seven have at least 11 tackles.

Advantage: Green Bay. As a team, the Packers do an excellent job of closing running lanes, while Detroit does not do a good enough job at opening them up.

DET passing vs. GB defense: When I was a kid, 'Transformers' was awesome. When Michael Bay tried to turn it into a summer flick, it made me want to further repress my childhood so that I'd have no memory of ever enjoying the battle of Autobots vs. Decepticons. But there's still one guy that makes me glad to have watched that cartoon: Calvin "Megatron" Johnson.

Whoa, nelly. Megatron is a beast. I know I gushed about him last year, but I don't care. The 6'5", 236 lb. Georgia Tech product managed to put up 1331 yards and 12 touchdowns on the putrid 2008 Lions squad. He is big, fast, strong, has great hands, and can make any catch at any time. He has been limited in the last two weeks because of injury, but coach Jim Schwartz says that it isn't serious and he is currently listed as probable.

After Johnson is where the problems start. Bryant Johnson is a first round pick who never lived up to his promise. Dennis Northcutt is a Jacksonville castoff, which is saying something. Derrick Williams has some promise, but is buried on the depth chart. Yamon Figurs is a recent addition, but will likely focus on return duties. Will Heller is a career backup at TE, and first-rounder Brandon Pettigrew was injured in training camp and is still trying to figure out his role.

Behind center, Detroit went all-in on Matthew Stafford, which I thought was a terrible decision back in April. Stafford hasn't looked awful, but he certainly hasn't outplayed fellow rookie Mark Sanchez (who is on a much better team). Stafford has a big arm (894 yards, 3 TDs), but merely average accuracy (56.8% completion) and questionable decision-making (6 INTs, 65.6 QB rating). Basically, I didn't think that Detroit should have spent first-overall money on a guy who may or may not work out at the pro level, but the jury is still out on him.

Ever since dislocating his kneecap against Chicago, however, the Matthew Stafford debate is moot for the time-being. With Stafford likely sidelined another week, Daunte Culpepper takes the reigns again. And you know what that means:

While we remember his time with Minnesota in the earlier parts of the 2000's, Culpepper has never been the same since his 2006 knee injury. He's bounced around a bit before settling in Detroit as a stop-gap QB, but he's still a capable passer. He still has a big arm, decent accuracy, and can run a huddle effectively. As weird as it seems, one of Daunte Culpepper's biggest weaknesses is the size of his hands. For a few years, Culpepper was averaging over a fumble per game. He has compensated for his tiny mitts by employing an unconventional throwing motion, but when he tries to run or gets hit in the pocket, he is prone to losing control of the ball.

And Culpepper has been hit a lot lately. Seven sacks against the Steelers is downright Rodgers-esque. Even before that, though, the Lions gave up 10 sacks in 4 games, giving them 17 total for the season. The Lions simply cannot protect their quarterback, something we know all about. Backus is a decent blind-side protector, and Raiola has been around long enough to make good adjustments on the line, but Cherilus is still too raw, the interior linemen are too weak, and the backs do not block well.

Green Bay's 3-4 defense was supposed to be the kind that got after the quarterback and forced turnovers. While the +7 ratio fulfills the second part, the sacks simply haven't been there. Through four games, the Packers have five sacks. Two came against Jay Cutler, and two against Marc Bulger. Brett Favre and his porous offensive line wasn't even touched on Monday night.

The decision to change Aaron Kampman into a pass-rushing OLB was a head-scratcher during the offseason, and it's become downright dumbfounding in October. On the play where Favre had over 7 seconds to find a receiver, Kampman wasn't shut down by a Vikings lineman. He was in zone coverage, someplace he has been found all too often. Dom Capers' blitz-happy defense took a turn for the conservative when Atari Bigby went down in Week 1, so his return is much anticipated. The lack of pass rush has severely hampered the production of the defensive backfield. Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, Al Harris, and Tramon Williams are still ball-hawks. As long as they get opportunities from the front seven, they will break up more than a few passes.

Advantage: Push. While Green Bay has the clear advantage on paper, I want to see more results before I declare them to have any sort of edge.

GB rushing vs. DET defense: Detroit's run defense was one of the many weak points in 2008. Thus far in 2009, it hasn't been fixed. The Lions give up 4.9 yards per attempt on the ground. That includes performances of 142 yards by Mike Bell, 92 yards by Adrian Peterson, 121 yards by Matt Forte, and 77 yards by Rashard Mendenhall. Jim Schwartz has tried to fix the problem by shuffling personnel, but results are mixed. LB Ernie Sims was benched last week for rookie DeAndre Levy, DT Chuck Darby was waived to make room on the field for rookie Sammie Lee Hill, and Grady Jackson has seen more and more snaps.

It doesn't help that the Lions are starting Packer castoff Jason Hunter at LDE with the 240 lb. Julian Peterson playing both at LOLB and at the other DE spot. Aside from Larry Foote, the Lions don't have anyone that can really shoot gaps and take on lead blockers. Ernie Sims was supposed to be that guy, but he's currently in the dog house. Rookie safety Louis Delmas is a big hitter, but he's no Troy Polamalu just yet. The only run-stopper they have is Grady Jackson, who is getting up there in years.

Luckily for Detroit, Green Bay doesn't seem that interested in running the ball. I did a little post last week exploring where the Green Bay rushing attack has gone. As it turns out, it really hasn't gone anywhere, it's just been ignored. The team averages a shade under 100 yards per game, which is somewhat respectable, but they haven't been able to sustain long drives by picking up yards on the ground. 2007 Ryan Grant is still MIA, and DeShawn Wynn has been downright awful. Brandon Jackson is coming back from injury, which might help, but he's best suited to a 3rd down back role anyway.

Up front, Green Bay's injury problems and lack of depth have exposed the team in pass protection, but also showed below-average run blocking. With Chad Clifton returning from injury, Daryn Colledge can resume his normal role at LG, putting Jason Spitz back at C and Scott Wells on the bench. From here, the Packers have a better shot of opening running lanes, especially on the right side (where Allen Barbre performs well).

Advantage: Push. This matchup is like the stoppable force against the movable object. If Green Bay calls an even offensive game, they might have an advantage, but I don't see any at this point.

GB passing vs. DET defense: Quarterbacks like playing Detroit. Against the Motor City Kitties, NFL passers have put up 15 scores against only 3 INTs while amassing a 73.3% completion rating. While the Lions have had middling success getting to the quarterback (10 sacks in 2009), their highest individual total is 2.0 (Jason Hunter). There is no designated pass rusher, unless you count Julian Peterson, who has been a failure as a DE on passing downs. Whether the sacks have been from good downfield coverage, poor blocking by opponents, or a schematic advantage, one thing is for sure: they aren't blitzing very much (bottom third in NFL).

The defensive backfield has been a sore point in Detroit. Anthony Henry has performed well as the #1 corner, but Will James and Philip Buchanon have been switching in and out of the starting lineup. Rookie Louis Delmas is best used in run support, but he is capable in pass coverage. The Lions split time at the other safety between Ko Simpson and former fan favorite Marquand Manuel.

Passing offense has been, for Green Bay, one of the lone bright spots in a disappointing start. Aaron Rodgers has put up big numbers behind an awful offensive line, showing accuracy and poise despite getting sacked 20 times in 4 games and having to run out of the pocket on numerous occasions. The receivers have been somewhat underwhelming, amassing 10 of the team's 14 drops. Greg Jennings has been unusually quiet in the first quarter of 2009, and has gone on record to say that he thinks that the team needs to get back to the short-passing game that allowed he and the other WRs to create yards after the catch. Hear, hear, Greg.

Advantage: Green Bay. If Rodgers can get hit 8 times and still throw for over 300 yards, he will get good looks against Detroit.

Preliminary verdict: Coming off a bye, Green Bay seems to have changed a bit as a team. Mark Tauscher has been re-signed. Brandon Jackson, Jeremy Thompson, Chad Clifton, and possibly Atari Bigby should be returning from injury. The offensive line should get back to the group that started the season, and the defense should get back to the blitzing that gave us all high expectations for 2009. Perhaps this is the week where we see the 2009 preseason team in action instead of the poor impersonation we've watched for the last month.

I can't think of how the timing could be better than hosting Detroit. Unless it was Oakland, or Kansas City, or the Browns, or even the struggling Cowboys. See, Lions fans? Your team has improved a lot!

Terry McCormick says that the starting of Hayes and the benching of Kearse are a sign of rebuilding. Another depressing fact in this article: the Titans are one of four teams who remain winless, but we're the onlny one of those not sporting a rookie head coach.

Wednesday Notes: Lions Re-Sign Jennings, Release Figurs

Jim Schwartz was "mic'd up" on Sunday, and there is an awesome video on NFL.com letting us see and hear Schwartz at different points in the game. I could watch it over and over.
Hoping to make their special teams better, the Lions re-signed wide receiver Adam Jennings and released Yamon Figurs, who was claimed on September 6.
Ernie Sims practiced today for the first time since injuring his shoulder against the Vikings. His status for Sunday is unclear, but he hopes to play against the Bears.
Cliff Avril also returned to practice today.
Kevin Smith, Sammie Hill, Kalvin Pearson, and Dewayne White missed today's practice.

The Lions have claimed wide receiver/returner Yamon Figurs, who was waived by the Baltimore Ravens yesterday. Figurs, like Marcus McCauley, was a third-round pick in the 2007 draft. He only has two career catches in two seasons with the Ravens, but he also has one kick return for a touchdown and one punt return for a touchdown, both of which came in 2007. It's obvious that the Lions didn't claim him for receiving reasons based on those stats. I'm assuming they still aren't happy with their current kick/punt return situation, and chances are Figurs will immediately take over as the starting returner. I expect Adam Jennings will be released to make room on the roster for Figurs.

On top of that news, the Lions have also signed four players -- TE Dan Gronkowski, LB Zack Follett, C Dan Gerberry, and OT Lydon Murtha -- to the practice squad. That leaves four open spots on the practice squad, and if who got those spots doesn't leak out, we will get the official list from the Lions sometime tomorrow.

Ravens Roster Cuts + Other Moves

Keep it here for the list of players being released or moved in other ways by the Baltimore Ravens as the team gets down to the maximum of 53 players by this afternoon's deadlines. So far, this is what we have heard:

Waived: Graham Gano, Justin Harper, Yamon Figurs, Evan Olglesby, Will Johnson, Jayson Foster, Jason Cook, Robby Felix, William VanDeSteeg have been waived.

Also waived with the announcement of the 53 man roster were: Nader Abdallah, Ernie Wheelwright, Eron Riley, K.J. Gerard, Tony Fein, Isaac Smolko, Tre Stallings, Stefan Rodgers, Cedric Peerman AND Devon Drew!

LB Jason Phillips has been placed on Injured Reserve, thereby ending his 2009 season but allows the Ravens to keep his rights and gives him his full salary. This is what I predicted in my earlier posting today.

Derrick Martin has been traded to the Green Bay Packers for what was thought be an undisclosed late round 2010 draft pick, but turned out to be offensive guard/tackle Tony Moll, who was added to the 53 man roster.

We will add more names as they are released by the team or when they list their final 53 players.

Reportedly, the tem is interested in adding a player or two and the names that have come up are former Jacksonville Jaguars (and Ravens) OT Tony Pashos and recently released NY Giant WR David Tyree.

Ravens 53 Man Roster: My Picks

Here are my picks for what the Ravens will end up doing later today when they announce the 53 man roster that they will be trimming down to when they release 22 guys to get down to the NFL max.

Offense

QB: Joe Flacco, Troy Smith, John Beck

WR: Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, Demetrius Williams, Kelley Washington, Justin Harper

RB: Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, LeRon McClain, Jalen Parmele

OL: Matt Birk, Ben Grubbs, Jared Gaither, Chris Chester, Marshal Yanda, Michael Oher, David Hale, Oniel Cousins

That’s only 52 guys and my final spot is a tough one to decide upon. I am looking at one of the following guys:

Yamon Figurs, Jason Cook, Jason Phillips, Joe Reitz, Kelly Talavou

Figurs still has the speed and with Webb looking a bit shaky on returns, Yamon gives us another option behind Chris Carr. Jason Cook gives us another fullback along with LeRon McClain. Jason Phillips was a 4^th round draft pick in 2009 and Ozzie doesn’t like to release draft picks. Perhaps Phillips will be IR’d to keep our hands on him (I expect the Ravens to IR undrafted rookie LB Dannell Ellerbe as well). Joe Reitz gives us more depth on the offensive line as well as Kelly Tavalou does the same for the defensive line.

I don’t want to take the easy way out by only selecting 52 players, so I will have to go out on a limb and make my selection and therefore the 53^rd spot on the Baltimore Ravens roster goes to Yamon Figurs.

The other players I was undecided about go onto our Practice Squad, where we can have up to eight players. Of course, I would expect the team to peruse other teams’ cuts to add a player or two to either our roster or Practice Squad, and vice versa for the rest of the league. However, in advance of that info, my Practice Squad would look like this:

Cook, Reitz, Talavou, Foster, Riley, Peerman, Smolko, Stallings

Additionally, as I stated earlier, the team would place both Dannell Ellerbe and Jason Phillips on Injured Reserve (IR), which would end their 2009 seasons, but ensure the team retains their rights while giving the players their full 2009 salaries, which do count against the team’s salary cap. However, being rookies, that should not be much of an issue.

Ravens Dominate Again: Finish Pre-Season 4-0

The Baltimore Ravens completed their 2009 exhibition season 4-0, by dominating the Atlanta Falcons with their reserves most of the game 20-3. Last time the Ravens went undefeated in pre-season was before the 2000 Super Bowl season.

To many of the fans, this was an incredibly meaningless and boring game. However, to the knowledgable fan, this was as important a game as there was for the team as a whole. While most of the starters were on the sidelines, the reserves were fighting for their NFL careers, hoping to make that one last impression that would convince the team's Front Office that they deserve a spot on the Ravens roster.

The Ravens must cut 22 of their 75 players to get down to the NFL maximum of 53 players by tomorrow afternoon. Almost one-third of this roster will be looking for either new teams or new jobs by late Saturday. Can you imagine the stress and fear going through some of the players on the so-called "bubble?" One moment, they are on the world's stage, being treated like royalty with a big salary, great benefits and teammates and the next moment they are returning to the factories and local supermarkets in their hometowns looking for a full time job that many of them are not even qualified to do.

This is the toughest time of the year for the Front Office personnel. Telling a player that his dream job is being ripped from his heart has to be one depressing deed to complete, much less 22 times in one afternoon. I feel for Head Coach John Harbugh and his staff on the tough decisions, much less the notification of the unlucky players. On the other hand, there will be a few surprises so the fear and disappointment of one player could be muted by the joy and aspirations of another who gets told he did indeed make the squad.

However, that's all happening tomorrow. Today is a time to exalt the efforts that the team made in their victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Our second team offense moved down the field and scored on its first possession against the Falcons' first team defense. Our deeper reserves bullied and pushed the Falcons' reserves all over the field and while it was not exactly pretty nor efficient at times, the final score showed the complete domination on both sides of the ball.

Third string QB John Beck played his most minutes and best of the pre-season, with the time to get into a rhythm, hitting on 16 of 28 passes for 232 yards, two TD's and no interceptions, with a 108.0 QB rating. The running backs did their part and there is going to be a tough decision as it appears that only one out of Jalen Parmale, Cedric Peerman and FB Jason Cook is going to make the squad.

At wide receiver, Justin Harper continues to frustrate both the team and himself, dropping two long balls after getting open on deep routes. At the same time, Eron Riley caught the passes thrown in his direction, a long ball plus a TD reception, but even that might not be enough to secure a spot for him. Little guys Jayson Foster and Yamon Figurs didn't do anything to help their causes either.

At linebacker, there are so many decisions to make and to me theyare all easy as the entire group deserves to stay on the team. That won't happen and while Jameel McClain and Tavares Gooden are locks, Antwan Barnes, Prescott Burgess, Danell Ellerbe, Jason Phillips and William VanDeSteeg are probably fighting for just two remaining spots between them. Since we didn't see the rookie Ellerbe in the game, I am hoping the team retains their rights to him by placing him on Injured Reserve to secure him for next year.

The defensive backs did relatively nothing to change the coaches opinions about their roles on the team. Evan Oglesby had a nice hit but still figures to be a long shot, and Frank Walker was,..well Frank Walker. Two penalties on one play epitomizes his style of play, which is grab and hold and hope the refs don't flag him, which they usually do. For wahtever reason, the team seems to like him but he has done nothing to prove his value to the fans this pre-season.

Once again, another great win despite the meaningless part of pre-season being wins and losses. The coaches now have to seclude themselves in the headquarters to make their final decisions by tomorrow afternoon. Ravens Training Camp: Saturday AM Edition

It was a clear and sunny morning, with sunshine and high temperatures expectred after a rain soaked Friday afternoon. It was nice to see Trevor Pryce dressed after seeing him carted off yesterday with a stepped-on foot. OG Marshall Yanda was removed from the PUP List (Physically Unable to Perform) which was good to see this early in camp. Once again, Jared Gaither is still a beast, although his belly is not nearly as big as last year.

Kickoff return drills are happening, with the "pitching" machine doing the "kickoffs." Taking turns returning them are Ray Rice, Lardarius Webb, Chris Carr, and even Willis McGahee, as former return man and still on the sidelines is Yamon Figurs.

The QB's are now throwing long passes to the WR's, drawing cheers with each completion. Even in football it is safe to still say, "chicks dig the long ball!"

The placekickers seem really bored. They spend a lot of time just standing around, talking, moving from one area to another. Every now and then they place the ball in the "tripod" holder and boot one in drill after drill to strengthen the leg, ensure proper technique and gauge accuracy. Zzzzzz....

Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron is barking instructions to the players, as the 1st string offensive line is pushing the 2nd team defense back 3-4 yards every play. Troy Smith directed the 2nd team offense up against the 1st team defense and threw a long 40 yard completion to WR Marcus Smith. But wait, the referee called Marcus for offensive pass interference, which drew complaints from the offensive sidelines prompting Ray to yell at them, "quit crying!"

When the 3rd team offense got on the field, I noticed an insignificant run of 4 yards by RB Cedric Perrman but what made it significant was that he carried 3 or 4 defensive players most of the way on his back.

Field goal drills had Steve Hauschka hitting from 32, 40 and 45 yards, with Suggs under the goalposts signalling good each time, although he did miss the 48 yarder. Gano came on to hit his 32 yarder, but missed the 39 yard attempt. He then consecutively hit from 44 and 48 yards. In other full contact drills, Flacco threw to no one in particular and Dawan Landry had his second pick of camp. Troy Smith then contributed to the defense by having his pass picked off by Haruki Nakamura and returned down the sideline until Troy raced over and knocked him hard out of bounds, prompting both Antwan Barnes and Terrell Suggs to get in Smith's face for the unnecessary contact in the first altercation of camp.

Flacco then hit consecutive passes to Todd Heap and Marcus Smith for 20 yards each. In the Red Zone, Flacco had Mark Clayton breaking open across the goal line but a leaping Dawan Landry snagged his second interception of the morning and third of camp. Finally, Flacco hit Smith across the middle for a 20 yard TD reception.

Final drill before the morning ended was kickoff returns and everyone seemed to take part in the coverage side of the ball, including Suggs and Flacco on one side. On the final return, Lardarius Webb broke into the clear amid yells from the coaches to "finish it," but kicker Graham Gano caught him from behind at the goal line.

After practice ended, Justin Harper once again fist-bumped me on his way by, Michael Oher shook my hand, and I also got short interviews with Haruki Nakamra and Dawan Landry before they left the field. Check out their interviews when I put them up as a separate FanPost.

Ravens Rookies & Select Veterans Take The Field

The Baltimore Ravens got off to a great start as their rookies and more than a few veterans took the field this morning at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. Veteran QB's Joe Flacco (sounds sort of strange to be calling him a veteran now), Troy Smith and John Beck wore the red jerseys as other veterans such as Mark Clayton, Demetrius Williams, Justin Harper, L.J. Smith took part on the offensive side of the ball. They joined rookie draft picks Cedric Peerman (RB), Jason Cook (FB) and Eron Riley (WR). Defensively, veterans Kelly Gregg (DT), Tavares Gooden (LB), Fabian Washington (CB), Frank Walker (CB), Dawan Landry (SS), Chris Carr (CB), Prescott Burgess (LB) were dressed to show rookie defensive players such as 2nd round pick Paul Kruger (LB), Dannell Ellerbe (LB), Lardarius Webb (CB), K.J. Gerard (CB), Robbie Felix (C), and the NFL Bench Press Champion from Michigan,Will Johnson (DE). who put up 47 reps of 225 pounds.

First Looks:

DT Kelly Gregg looks like a fire hydrant and if healthy, will be a welcome addition to last year's ferocious defense.

Rookie CB K.J. Gerard looks taller than the 6'1" that he is listed at. So do WR's Justin Harper and Eron Riley, both listed at 6'3".

QB Joe Flacco (6'6") stands head and shoulders above both Troy Smith (6') and John Beck (6'2") and walks with a swagger not normally seen in a second year player. L.J. Smith seen working hard on the blocking sled and looks bigger than I expected, plus he is catching every high pass on his fingertips every time.

Demetrius Williams is running and catching without any apparent hitch in his step. In a post practice interview, Williams said he's 100% and when I asked him if he was ready for some hitting, he replied, "I feel I am ready for all of that and I think I'm in the best physical shape in a long time. I'm not worried about anything as far as physical right now."

Willis McGahee, as noted earlier is in camp but is not participating in drills. In post-practice interviews, McGahee said, "...nobody wants to sit on the sideline. I just want to make sure I'm completely healthy." When asked about his offseason training regimen, he jokingly refused to give up his secrets, only stating, "I feel more leaner."According to head coach John Harbaugh, a number of players were place on the 'Physically Unable to Perform" (PUP) List, which included McGahee, along with Davon Drew, Ben Grubbs, Yamon Figurs, Marshall Yanda, Adam Terry and Samari Rolle. Although none of these injuries other than Yanda's continuing recovery, Coach Harbaugh says they just want to be careful at the start of camp.

Rookie placekicker Graham Gano was at practice, kicking for the first time today since we saw him last at the end of the off season OTA's in June. He actually missed a short 30 yarder in drills, but had a rotating group of holders that included Joe Flacco, Troy Smith, Mark Clayton and even a couple of coaches. His regular holder, punter Sam Koch, was not in camp. His response when I took him aside after practice was that there were a couple of "interesting" snaps, but as a kicker "it's my job to put the ball through whether the ball's flat on the ground or perfect holds."

Once practice was over for the morning session, both Joe Flacco and Coach Harbaugh took the podium. In the bombardment of questions to Flacco, I was able to ask him how the game has "slowed" down for him now compared to last year. Flacco replied, "... by the end of the year, the game was at a good speed for me. I've always said that as I grow with the offense, the defense will get slower." He also said that he tihnks the team will go a long way. "We came close last year and plan on going further this year," stated Flacco. When questioned about his recent Reebok commercial for the NFL.com's Fantasy Files, including how long it took to make and were there any special effects, he replied, "It took about an hour to make it, and do you think I need special effects to do that?"

Coach Harbaugh took the podium next and started off saying that he thought practice was "crisp" but it would be sharper on Friday. He said he thought Demetrius Williams looked good and "his goal is to become a more durable football player." Asked about the constant debate of the team needing a #1 wide receiver, Harbaugh shot back that "whoever is out there catching the ball will be real happy Joe's throwing to them." He went on to acknowledge that they have discussed Michael Vick and Matt Jones among others including Amani Toomer and Justin McCareins to decide "what they can or cannot do for us." However, he said that someone in camp will step up, be it a "Marcus Smith, Justin Harper or someone else."

I was able to ask a question to WR Mark Clayton about knowing he has the confideence t step up, but what about the younger guys at wide receiver? Clayton replied, "We got some guys really hungry, ready to make plays to do what they can to help this team."

Is Derrick Mason Truly Retired?

According to NFL sources, in order for a player to officially retire, they must send specific paperwork into the NFL's offices. At this time, they have not received anything official from Mason, so hopefully this will all blow over in the next week or so. If that paperwork is sent over by Mason, then you all can start jumping back on the "Panic-wagon" along with those who jumped on the "Flacco-Wagon" last year when we started looking like a winner after I predicted a 10-6 season in 2008.

My point is, just don't go postal over the so-called non-moves in the wide receiver department during this past off season in free agency and the draft, like many of you did when we used our first pick on OT Michael Oher. Oher's selection by Ozzie is now looking like the typical "Wizard" moves that he has earned his great reputation for. How many of you complained about the pick when it was made and thought we needed the WR instead? Perhaps a wideout in the other rounds would have been better, but that is with the future knowledge we now have.

Let's try to break Mason's semi-official retirement announcement down into a couple of specific areas. One, why is he retiring and why now? Two, what should the Ravens do at this point, with Training Camp just a couple of weeks away and the options relatively limited to a trade or free agent signing.

Many fans have commented that Mason should have told the team before the draft that he was retiring so we could have planned for his departure. Obviously, Derrick just decided this, although I'm sure he's been thinking about it for quite a while. He is no youngster in the NFL and with lingering injuries he has to be thinking about the end coming sooner than later. He just wasn't ready to end his career once last season's close call with a chance to go to the Super Bowl ended. He might have thought he had at least one more season in him, otherwise he would not have talked about a contract extension to get that one last big payday and signing bonus. However, once his best buddy, Steve McNair brought the epiphany of mortality to the forefront of Mason's mind, he looked at his career, life and future. That was the final straw in his decision-making process and the emotional toll the loss of a great friend took on him made the decision final. Or at least he thought so enough to post his decision on his blog (Click here to read his announcement). However, let's see what plays out over the next few days as the emotions settle down and clearer heads prevail. While it might still stand, I wouldn't be super surprised if he rescinds his comments with the excuse that they were fueled by his grief over the tragic loss of one of his closest friends.

As far as the "what do we do now" question that everyone is asking, our options are limited to what I mentioned before the "Jump." We can either trade for a receiver, sign a free agent, or of course, do nothing and hope our remaining crop can get the job done with a second year QB. Most of the readers here seem to think our current receivers are just not good enough nor experienced to step up and fill the void of Mason's 80+ receptions and 1,000 yards from 2008. I'm not one of them, as I feel that the WR position can be over-rated and is only as good as the QB's ability to get the ball to them. I cite both the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots abilities to get to the Super Bowl with a very pedestrian group of wideouts (other than the TO year in Philly and the Moss year in NE). While I am certainly not comparing Joe Flacco to either Donovan McNabb much less Tom Brady, I'm also not going to compare their defenses to the dominance of the Ravens that Flacco has as his advantage over both Brady and McNabb.

The obvious answer to so many pundits is to finally pull the trigger on either Anquan Boldin or Brandon Marshall. For whatever reasons you want to list here, I just don't see Ozzie making those moves, as he places an incredible high value on first round draft picks, and places an equally high value on the personal make-up of the players he tries to acquire. Perhaps the trade of a lower round draft pick for a "middle-of-the-pack" type of receiver may happen before this is over and done. More than likely, it appears that if indeed Mason makes it official in the next few days, the Ravens will bring in another bunch of the free agent receivers still looking for NFL employment for one more chance at joining the team in 2009.

However, I see Ozzie pretty much standing pat. If he picked out recent free agent signing Kelly Washington from a lackluster group of free agents a few months ago, then what else is actually out there that he thinks could be signed and contribute better than what we already have? Somehow, I doubt he will just make a roster-filling move to satisfy the public or even the press that has begun feasting like vultures on this recent news. The Ravens have a decent base of receivers that can produce if given the chance. It has to start somewhere and sometime, as it did with every great receiver that came into the league with little fanfare and then exploded when given the chance.

If the Ravens are looking to fill the role that Mason played, then they don't have to look far for his replacement and that is Mark Clayton. Clayton is built like a younger Mason, has good hands and could easily slide over to be the #1 target for Flacco. Then who fills Clayton's 'role?" That could be either Demetrius Williams, if healthy, or perhaps the up and coming Marcus Smith, who has the size, speed and hands to be a #2 or 3 wideout. The thing that becomes even more important than what it was is who will then be part of the group of reserves that will need to contribute enough to back up the starters? That group, including Kelly Washington, Yamon Figurs and a bunch of other guys will need to step up and separate themselves in Training Camp to earn those chances.

Not that it's easy to replace Derrick Mason's production and the confidence that Flacco had in him every time he released a pass in his direction that it would more than likely be caught by Mason's glue-like hands. However, it is definitely not time to panic like so many of you have already done. Don't release your typical fan-like venom on this team and it's Front Office. Have faith that they have always seemed to pull out that diamond-in-the-rough move when you least expected it. We will get it done and re-load like we have done all throughout the recent Ravens successful history. Keep the faith and lay off the leadership. Make no mistake about it. Derrick Mason was loved and will be missed by this team and its fans, but we will get through this hiccup and better players will appear out of this opportunity.
