Thursday night, second year WR Marcus Smith came off the field limping after making a very impressive tackle on a special teams play. At the time, most of us were probably unsure of how serious the injury was, just thinking that it was a sprain or that the player landed on it the wrong way. However, after the game Coach Harbaugh stated that it is a pretty serious injury and further reports have given clues that Smith could be missing the whole season if his ACL is as messed up as we think.

Now, where does this injury leave us? Baltimore was very excited to see a guy like Smith step up and improve what many around the league think is one of the weakest WR groups in the NFL. He was having a great start to the pre-season and looked to be a guy we could count on as our 4th or even 3rd WR at times. Here are a few possibilities.

Stick With Our Current Group: With Smith's injury, this leaves Kelly Washington and Demtrius Williams fighting for the 3rd and 4th spots. This injury moves guys like Justin Harper up the depth chart just slightly and may even give guys like Jason Foster or Eron Riley a chance.

Acquire Yet Another Free Agent: There is still some talent out there in the Free Agent pool. We have debated for a while now of the guys out there that could possibly come in here and help us out. Here are a few of the Free Agent WR that seem to stand out.

Marvin Harrison

Ike Hilliard

Matt Jones

Ashley Lelie

Justin McCareins

Jerry Porter

Reggie Williams

What is the best decision for the Ravens at the moment?

Being as it is preseason, we have to look back at two games, not just one. The Bucs last played the Titans at Raymond James during the 2007 season, when a late Tennessee TD put them in the lead, but left the home town team in pewter with a little too much time on the clock. Jeff Garcia masterfully hit Ike Hilliard for key first downs and got the team in position for a winning Matt Bryant FG.

But that was regular season, and unlike that version, these games don't count. You don't have to go back that long though, 2005 at the Coliseum, the Bucs started the year trying to end back to back losing season for the first time in 7 years. There are actually a couple of amazing similarites between then and now...

Bucs kicker Matt Bryant was in heavy competition then too. His advisary? Todd France, who kicked some in the second half. Bryant obviously went on to win the competition.

If the Bucs score enough points Saturday in the early going and prevent the Titans from catching up, then the QB who led the team to victory in both games would be Luke McCown.

Don't miss the 3 videos in this article!

We're going to take a look at both games..., First, the 2005 Preseason game, then the Regular season win on 10/14/07.

REMEMBER WHEN...

1980 Week 6, Tampa Bay at Houston Oilers

1980 Houston from Niko H on Vimeo.

And now for a real blast from the past...as we know, the Titans franchise was originally the Houston Oilers. So to pay homage to that team, a clasic battle between these two teams. The setting is October 19th, 1980; The Bucs had just come off the hugely successful 1979 campaign, and did not start off 1980 in the same manner. There were a lot of injuries, the schedule was harder, and The Bucs weren't sneaking up on anyone anymore. Earl Campbell was still the sensation he was, the snake was behind the center, and Luv Ya Blue was rocking in the AstroDome!

THE PLAY:

The Bucs prevented getting blown out by scoring on a Doug Williams to Gordon Jones TD with under 2 minutes to go in the first half. That put the score 13-7 at halftime. But the Oilers were dominating this game and continued. They were up 20-7 in the 4th Qtr and driving, when this happened.

RESULT: The Bucs mounted a rally, but it ended when a Doug Williams to Jimmy Giles pass was picked off with just under 2 minutes were left in the game. The loss put the Bucs at 2-4-1, and in bleak shape for the season.

Anthony Gonzalez and Wide Reciever Stats, Part 2

I explained how Catch% and YPR are very important tools for evaluating WRs and showed Anthony Gonzalez's success in both in part 1. Now I'll expand on the relationship between the two, and what it can tell us about WR performance.

YPR isn't a perfect measure of how deep a WR is catching the ball. A 15 yard pass could be a pass caught 3 yards deep and run for 12 more yards, or it could be a pass caught 15 yards deep with no YAC, or anything between. Since not all WRs are equally good at running after the catch, and certain routes allow for different amounts of YAC, YPR isn't the best measure of how deep a WR is catching the ball.

Luckily some places WR YAC is kept, allowing a calculation of the average depth a WR caught the ball. This should be the best measure of WR usage available without going through play by play.

There were 168 player-seasons with 50+ targets the last two years. Among these 168 their AirYPR and Catch% had a r squared value (the percent of the variance in Catch% accounted for by AirYPR) of .16 , meaning that 16% of the variation in catch% can be accounted for by YPR. That is a small correlation, but it is significant, especially when considering that it doesn't account for WR skill, defense ability or QB skill. The average depth a WR catches the ball at, accounts for 16% of the variation in the percent of the time he catches the ball. To relate this level of relatedness, this is a similar correlation to team wins vs Offensive Yards Per Carry and team wins vs team penalties (or more accurately, since the correlation for penalties is negative, team losses and penalties).

Just like committing penalties is a significant factor is losing games and running for a good YPC is related to winning, a WRs AirYPR is related to his Catch%.

So there's a solid relation between the two. Now the useful part. Mgrex03 lent me a hand to use a logarithmic regression instead of the a straight linear one I used before. Average AirAPR was 9.18 and average catch% was 58.8%. Combining these two with the logarithmic regression gives a formula for the catch% of an average receiver for a given AirYPR. We can compare this to the WRs actual catch% for a measure of how well a WR catches the football.

It's not an overall metric of WRs because YAC is excluded. A WR's job breaks down into Getting Open, Catching the Football and Running after the Catch. This covers none of the run after, pretty much all of the catching and some elements of getting open (more room to catch raising catch%). As a alternative to the rate stat, there's Receptions over Average, the WR's receptions minus (the expected catch% for his AirYPR muliplied by his targets). Giving how many more or less catches the player had compared to what would be expected for an average WR with the player's number of targets.

And now the results

Full spreadsheet here (download)

Top 10 Catch% over average

Player

Targets

C% over Average

Ike Hilliard 08

58

+17.8%

No Film at 11!

Congratulations to BucStats for edging out V.Money for the Win!

Email me at CONTESTS@BUCSTOP.COM

Here are the errors used for determining the winner..

V.Money was first to post, but as I said in rules that this would not end at first answer, but Friday Morning. Due to other reasons, Im ending it on Thursday. Anyone else would have simply copied one of these two guys so that wouldnt be fair.

Bucstats posted the more correct answers, when taking out the same mistakes both guys made, Bucstats is left as our winner!

V.Money both incorrectly included Errict Rhett, who did NOT start for Tampa Bay in 1997. He scored a few TDs in 3rd and Goal short yardage situation, but you guys can both contact Drew Rosenhaus and bash him over the head for giving such bad advice to the best running back to don a Bruce uniform since James Wilder. I simply overlooked the (7) count which was obviously incorrect if you just count the names. LOL.. It happens!

However V.Money also incorrectly included Martin Meyhew, and forgot to include Philip Buchanon and Kevin Carter. Bucstats included P-buc, wether by seeing someone elses post or not, he still included it.

FLORIDA GATORS have more starters in Pewter, with the Noles close behind. Im pretty sure Cane involvement was heavier overall or in Orange days, as USC probably had more starters in Orange than Ohio State did (sorry Joey G if your reading).

Gators-

Looking to Looker for experience at WR

You know it's a slow day when you're getting a post about Dane Looker. And what exactly do we want to say about Dane Looker?

Look, you and I both know the Rams don't have a lot of experience at WR - note I said they lack experience not talent - the two guys on the depth chart behind Donnie Avery - Keenan Burton and the newly acquired Laurent Robinson - carry big question marks. Now, teams have gone far with lesser receiving corps, but there's usually always some experience on the roster...that and an unstoppable defense and/or running game. There's not exactly anyone on the free agent market who'd be considered elite, to say the least, but there is plenty of experience, and some names the Rams could be considering. From a Pro Football Weekly item last week:

...we hear it’s quite possible the Rams might decide to re-up with veteran free agent Dane Looker after the draft if he's still available. Consistent and reliable, Looker has managed to stick around because of his savvy, versatility and special-teams ability. After the draft, we hear it’s also possible that the Rams might consider adding veteran free-agent WR Amani Toomer, whom Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo is familiar with from their time spent together with the Giants, or perhaps Ike Hilliard, a former Giant who was released by Tampa Bay.

They could do a lot worse than Toomer or Hillard, who would just be one-year hands hired to work the ranch as the Rams rebuild. Football Outsiders even suggested Philly WR Hank Baskett, a restricted free agent the Eagles tendered at a second round level. That seems unlikely until you consider that the Eagles are interested in some big names like Ocho Cinco and earlier talk about being a player for Anquan Boldin. If that happens, they might be willing to let Baskett walk since they also have Kevin Curtis, DeSean Jackson and Reggie Brown on the roster, unless they see his productivity from last season as a sign of things to come.

Baskett would be a nice get, more of a long-term solution at 26 than Toomer or Hillard. I also like his blocking ability. The Rams have decent blocking WRs in Burton and Robinson, but, again, we come back to the injury question marks surrounding those two. It seems pretty unlikely that Baskett will be a Ram.

And so we're back to Looker. He's a known commodity. He can block, play special teams (he's a fine holder). Don't overlook the blocking thing; one of Robinson or Burton is likely to be healthy at any point in the season but just one blocker among the WRs isn't enough. Looker wouldn't be much of a cap hit either. He's not your playmaker to complement Avery, but seems like a useful enough part to have around, as Tackle Box mentioned in his Being Billy Devaney series.

Bringing Looker back makes sense and gives the team some much needed experience at WR, but is that going to be enough?

NFL Free Agency Roundup - Tampa Bay Buccaneers Edition

Those crazy Buccaneers. They go and lose the final four games of the season -- including a horrible season-ending, playoff-missing loss to the (snicker) Raiders -- and they feel they have to make some changes. Not just a few changes. A LOT of changes. And they need to make them RIGHT FREAKING NOW!!

Head coach? Fired.

General Manager? Fired.

Quarterback? Told not to come back.

Leading rusher? Cut.

#2 Wide Receiver? Cut.

Ha! That'll show the league!!

Errrm, right. So, what's left? Wellll.........

They have a new starting QB in Luke McCown. No, really. They signed him to a 2 year deal and all but anointed him as the team's starter. Right now, he isn't a good fantasy option.

They have a new starting TE in Kellen Winslow, whom they got in a trade from Cleveland. Considering the Bucs had three different tight ends with a touchdown reception last year, you wouldn't think that tight end was a big need for them. But there you go. Winslow won't be a good fantasy option either because Tampa always uses multiple TEs.

They have a new starting RB in Derrick Ward, whom they signed as a free agent. Well, he's kind of the new starting RB. He will probably take over the "pass catching speedster" role that Warrick Dunn had, splitting carries and leaving the "powerful bruiser" role to Earnest Graham in an attempt to recreate the dual 1000 rushing yard seasons that Ward and Brandon Jacobs had with the Giants.

It's a good plan. And it's a plan that might actually work, if the Bucs put together a passing game solid enough (hint hint: Terrell Owens!) to keep defenses from stacking the line. Instead of Eli Manning-Plaxico Burress, the Bucs have...wait, let me check...Luke McCown-Antonio Bryant. Not really the same thing.

Oh yeah, Cadillac Williams (63 carries and 4 TDs) is still in the mix at RB as well. Right now it's hard to see how Ward will be worth anything more than a flex position in fantasy leagues, but the potential for good things from Ward is there.

Do these moves make any of the Buccaneers listed better from a fantasy point of view? No. Ward will almost certainly be worth less than last season, Winslow will probably be worth the same (43 catches, 428 rec yds, 3 TDs seems right) and I don't know what to think about McCown although my initial reaction is "Bleaargh".

It should be an interesting summer in Tampa. It wouldn't surprise me if they draft a tight end or another running back either, because that's how they roll.

Thursday Notes: 2009 Salary Cap Increased by $4 Million

The salary cap was just increased by $4 million, putting the total number for 2009 at $127 million. The Lions may be around $40 million under the cap, meaning they should be able to add quite a few players to the roster once free agency begins on Friday. I don't think the Lions will go after any high-profile players, though. They could definitely afford to, but since so many different positions need to be addressed, I'm guessing they will spread the money out in order to fill as many of those needs as possible.

Former Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, who is a free agent, talked up the Lions and said he has his eye on them during an interview on Sirius NFL Radio. Although the Lions do need a backup, I would not be a fan of bringing in Grossman. He constantly underperformed in Chicago, and I don't think the Lions need another below average QB on the roster. They do need to make a move to find a backup for Daunte Culpepper, but I would rather see many players other than Grossman be signed.

Just to update everyone on the Matt Cassel trade I was offered in the Football Burrito mock draft, I turned it down. Just like some of the other things I've asked for your opinion on recently, I was leaning toward turning it down and the poll results cemented my decision. 72% of the 292 votes said to turn down the trade, mainly because there are simply too many questions about how good Cassel would be on a team like the Lions. Besides that, why give up a first-round pick for a player that could end up being the next Scott Mitchell?

Not a whole lot worth talking about has happened, but one thing I will make note of from the Football Burrito mock draft is that Andre Smith was picked by the Bengals with the #6 overall selection. This is pretty surprising considering Smith's stock is dropping so far in real life. Peter King actually thinks Smith could drop all the way to the #33 pick, which is the first selection of the second-round (the pick belongs to the Lions). If Smith did end up falling that far and the Lions hadn't already drafted an offensive tackle, I would be in favor of pulling the trigger on him. Would it be a gamble? Of course. But if you can get his head on straight you're looking at a steal. There is no doubt that he is talented; his problem seems more mental than anything else.

SI.com's Don Banks has the Lions picking Aaron Curry in his latest mock draft and NFL.com's Pat Kirwan has the Lions selecting Jason Smith. Although most mock drafts still have the Lions picking Matthew Stafford, there are more without Stafford being the top pick than there were before the combine. Maybe some of these "experts" will start to realize that just because the Lions need a QB doesn't mean they will draft one with the top pick. After all, they have needs at quite a few other positions as well. I guess they just aren't as high-profile as the quarterback position to some of the draft analysts out there.

The Buccaneers cut Derrick Brooks, Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Warrick Dunn, and Cato June on Wednesday.

Pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers litter; should Bengals go after any?

On Wednesday afternoon, in effort to supposedly get younger, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released five veterans which, again, reminds us that this league hurts veteran players like no other professional sport by an unintentional design. The five veterans are linebackers Derrick Brooks and Cato June, wide receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard and running back Warrick Dunn.

As we keep remind you, and as Mehl reminds me, the Bengals will have six linebackers under contract heading into 2009 once Brandon Johnson and Rashad Jeanty sign their tenders. There's no indication that they're offering Darryl Blackstock anything and Corey Mays' agent has already shown confusion as to why Mays won't be tendered.

So there's an issue of linebackers and where they'll stock the position. Now that Derrick Brooks and Cato June are in the market, that just sweetens the pot -- and suddenly lowers the demand for other free agents. We need an experienced wide receiver as insurance in case Jerome Simpson doesn't turn out this season -- he has to produce this year, or he's walking the Chris Perry line.

Question is, should the Bengals go after one, if not two of these players?

Rumors are spreading. Joey Galloway will be released. Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn, Ike Hilliard, and Cato June might be gone as well. We can only verify the Galloway news at the moment, but it looks like the Bucs have scheduled a press conference for 3:00 PM Eastern, so we will know more very soon.

3rd Quarter

At the beginning of the quarter the announcers throw it down to sideline reporter Laura Okmin who informs viewers that Sean Payton told her he's "gotta get the running game going."

12:18 Remaininig - Garcia runs out of time and gets rid of it with a throw to B.J. Askew that gets deflected and caught by Antonio Bryant. Upon further review it looks like it may have hit the ground but the usually challenge-happy Payton does nothing. Interesting. He might have actually won it too! Bucs also do a good job of running a quick play before any challenge.

11:06 Remaining - More Garcia scrambling. This time its 11 yards for the first down with goal to go. Cadillac Williams finished off the drive with a touchdown on the next play.

10:00 Remaining - Brees throws very short to Reggie, who drops a very easy catch. He is visibly frustrated. Unlike Milli Vanilli, Bush cannot blame it on the rain.

9:54 Remaining - 3rd and 10. Drew Brees takes the only sack of the game from the Tampa defense. Credit this one to Greg White who stunts from the outside to the inside and is able to get penetration up the middle and take out Drew's legs. On another note, this was the Saints first drive of the half and Payton called three straight passing plays. Gotta get the running game going, huh coach?

8:45 Remaining - More jinxing from the announcers. On 2nd down Brian Billick mentions that the Bucs running game should soon allow Tampa Bay to "go vertical." The very next play is a deep pass completion to Antonio Bryant for the second score of the quarter. Thank you Brian Billick. Jason David is on the coverage with Josh Bullocks in for help. They both bite on a double move but I'm not sure why Bullocks was so far up.

During a break they put the camera on the guys upstairs. Before anyone had ever mentioned Brian Baldinger's finger to me, I had never noticed it but I finally got a glimpse of it. That thing is nasty! Can't he just pop that thing back into place? They're doing amazing things with medicine these days.

8:36 Remaining - Deuce makes his first appearance of the game with a 3 yard rush.

7:59 Remaining - Gaines Adams beats the hell out of Jammal Brown with a super spin move and forces a bad Brees throw. I wonder if he gets paid as much as Will Smith or Charles Grant.

7:53 Remaining - Brees hits Colston on 3rd down for the first, the second time the two have connected for big gains on big third down plays. That is Colston's bread and butter. Great to have him back. He also makes a nice 13-yard catch a few plays later.

4:43 Remaining - 2nd and 2 for the Saints in the red zone. Brees throws to the right side but Barber tips the ball and Cato June makes the interception. We already heard Payton explain what went wrong with the routes by Shockey and Ortega so I will spare you the redundancy. What Payton didn't talk about was the fact that out of 8 plays in that drive, only two of them were runs. I thought you said you had to get the running game going. Deuce ran twice for 10 yards. Is that not good enough? We're almost at the end of the third quarter here and I'm not sure how much longer you want to wait before you pull the trigger on the ole running game.

The Saints defense forces a Bucanneer three and out following the interception. You can't ask them to do anymore than that.

On the next drive Payton finally makes good on his word to run the ball and calls five Pierre rushes. Strangely enough, he moves the ball well and picks up 20 yards and 2 first downs in 4 plays. Who knew?

4th Quarter

13:21 Remaining - Drew drops back to pass but Pierre Thomas can't get out of the way and even knocks the ball loose in Brees' hands. He recovers but the timing of the play is off.

13:16 Remaining - Brees throws deep to the end zone but it gets picked off by Tanard Jackson. But wait...there are flags on the field. Ronde Barber gets called for illegal contact and the play is called back. Whew! I knew Drew wouldn't force a pass into double coverage like that when the game is on the line. He's too good for that. Thank you Ronde. Anyone ever tell you that you look like your brother?

12:18 Remaining - Swing pass to Pierre and he does the rest for 20 yards and the score. 20-17 Tampa. The Saints gained 72 yards on that drive. Pierre had 44 of them.

10:58 Remaining - 3rd and 5. Garcia drops back and holds on to the ball too long. Vilma comes in to force the fumble and make the sack. The Bucs are forced to punt. Another big defensive play to get them off the field.

Unfortunately the Bucs defense also comes up big to force the Saints three and out.

7:38 Remaining - Randall Gay makes a beautiful deflection to break up a pass attempt to Ike Hilliard. Really great play.

7:30 Remaining - The very next play it's Jason David getting his hand in on a pass intended for Antonio Bryant. Bucs punt away. Wow! Our defense game up big again to get themselves off the field.

Drew Brees' helmet mic is not working.

7:16 Remaining - After a bad punt by Josh Bidwell, Shockey makes a big catch over the middle for 21 yards and into field goal territory.

Saints can't get anything else going and have Hartley kick the game tying field goal. 20-20.

4:56 Remaining - Garcia runs a bootleg right and hits Clayton on the crossing route. Clayton is just too big and too fast for Gay.

Even after giving up some big yardage the Saints defense forces the Bucs to punt. I didn't realize how great a game these guys had and how much they really kept the team in the game, most of all towards the end.

2:33 Remaining - A Brees pass intended for Marques Colston gets picked off by Jermaine Phillips. The pass coverage appears to move away from Colston but Phillips comes in from behind the play to get himself in position. Honestly, it just looks like Drew threw it too far behind Colston. The Bucs are already well into field goal range.

The defense does another good job and only allows a field goal thanks in part to a Bobby McCray sack. This now allows the offense a chance to score a touchdown for the win or a field goal to tie. 23-20 Tampa.

1:50 Remaining - 1st and 10. Colston can't make a sure catch over the middle.

1:45 Remaining - Brees throws yet another interception on a pass intended for Lance Moore. Game over. I'm done talking about this game.
