Good morning, folks! Sorry I've been sketchy on the links but I've been keeping busy, to be sure! Thanks to Fooch again for covering for me. Still, I had to sleep early for a good cause. If you're wondering what it is, make sure to come on over to this site tomorrow morning at 7 AM PT, I should have my post up by then. All I can say is it was a very positive experience for me. That being said it has been nice to be deterred from say, the current 49ers team but I suppose I have to look at this season at some point. I'm done crying over it, to be honest. This team needs to finish strong, someone told me that over the phone yesterday, and it's true. Very true, I'm looking for as strong a finish as possible and improvement from Alex Smith so we know what we have going into the 2010 season. This isn't a bad team we've got here, we have too many good players to just waste that talent. Best I can do is look forward to Monday Night and hope I don't leave Candlestick disappointed. 49ers place DT Kentwan Balmer on Injured Reserve

So I guess that injury to DT Kentwan Balmer ended up a bit more serious than previously expected. Balmer had shoulder surgery this morning and has been placed on the Injured Reserve List, ending his season. To fill Balmer's roster spot, the team has signed DT Baraka Atkins. Atkins (6-4, 268) originally entered the NFL as a fourth round draft pick (120th overall) of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2007 Draft. He has played in 21 career games and recorded 28 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one pass defensed. Atkins was released by the Seahawks in September. Atkins, a 25-year-old native of Sarasota, FL, played collegiately at Miami (FL).

Balmer has come under much criticism since the 49ers took him in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft. The running joke his first year was that at one point he had more kick returns than tackles, thanks to his role as one of the up-men. This season he's certainly shown some improvement, although that's not too difficult when the bar was set so low his first year. Nonetheless, it seemed like we were hearing his name more and more as the season went along. Maybe not huge impact type play, but improvement nonetheless.

Of course, he could be stuck for a while behind Isaac Sopoaga, so it will be tough for him to break through for now. He's a guy we'll all be keeping an eye on next year in training camp.

Seattle Seahawks Unleash Aaron Curry: Taking Down JaMarcus Russell

Seattle unleashed Aaron Curry on the Raiders. It took one play for him to humiliate a veteran, but the shaming he put on Cornell Green was Puritanical. Curry only contributed to this blitz. He was the wrecking ball that toppled the wrapped and surrounded JaMarcus Russell.

Oakland is unbalanced left. It sets with two wide receivers and its tight end left, its running back center and a lone wide receiver on the right. Seattle is in a 4-3 under.

Curry sprints off the line. He's a full step ahead of even Michael Bennett. He holds a wide line and forces Green to shade clear into Oakland's end zone. Bennett, Red Bryant and Lawrence Jackson are bullying back the Raiders remaining offensive line. The least push comes from Baraka Atkins, matched against tight end Zach Miller. Linebackers Will Herring and David Hawthorne spy the running back and quarterback, respectively.

Green can't keep up and soon Curry is turning the corner and rushing Russell from behind. The pocket is collapsed and Russell is double-clutching and delaying. Jackson has beat the right guard. Bryant has collapsed the interior, concentrating his force on the center, but drawing support attention from the left guard. The left guard is overloaded, because the left tackle is backed in and almost to Russell by Bennett. Atkins is keeping Miller busy, but not creating much pressure. The space between the left tackle and tight end is stretched by the pressure and David Hawthorne shoots the gap. He wraps but doesn't fell Russell. Curry explodes through Russell and completes the sack.

Essential details: Curry edge rushes, takes a long angle, but gets free and contributes.

Atkins cannot overmatch Miller.

Jackson, Bryant and Bennett collapse and dismantle Oakland's starting offensive line.

Only Curry is assigned to blitz. Will Herring and Hawthorne delay, and blitz when opportune.

The final method for dealing with Seattle's 10 roster-worthy defensive linemen is to trade one. I won't go roster nutter and start conjuring elaborate trade scenarios, but I will analyze who they might trade, their likely value on the open market, what position Seattle might target in return and if Seattle could "win" any likely trade scenario.

Before we get any further, let us remove one name from the pool: Nick Reed. This is an obvious exclusion if you think about it. Reed is a SoCal kid, but a Duck by trade. He is an in-the-pads Northwesterner now that wants to be a Seahawks, is wanted by the Seahawks and is adored by the fans. He has dominated the preseason with his skills, talent and instincts. He defines a certain type of Tim Ruskell pick. A type of Ruskell pick that has been very good to Ruskell; a type that include Lofa Tatupu, Darryl Tapp, Josh Wilson and Brandon Mebane. These smaller guys that have mastered the art of football carry a stigma throughout their careers. That is the other major reason Reed is unmovable: He won't net much. No matter how he dominated the preseason, his size and tools still make him a seventh-rounder. And that's what Seattle would likely get back if they tried to move him.

The players Seattle could trade are Baraka Atkins and Michael Bennett. Both have top pro tools and talent. Atkins was an underachiever at Miami that performed agility drills better than he played football. Ruskell selected him because the tools were there and Ruskell thought the desire was there to work towards fulfilling them. He hasn't shown up like Bennett, but he is bigger, better built, more well-rounded to defend pass and run, and has a regular season résumé. He is also only a little more than a year older than Bennett. Atkins is quiet where as Bennett is loud. The plays between the plays, the plays that allow the big plays, is where Atkins is more stable and trustworthy than Bennett. Last year against the Pats, he showed a little big play potential, too.

Bennett is the possible-superstar young stud that has, as I said after Seattle's first preseason game, been "the most dominant player at any position," has "lived in the backfield," and "played at another level than his competition" throughout the preseason. His draft position no longer matters. Scouts know Bennett has middle-round tools or better, and if he had been a third round pick, he would be the talk of the preseason and tapped as an emerging star. Bennett dropped because he wasn't productive at Texas A&M and that supported his reputation as an immature underachiever. Seattle bought into the potential and is reaping the rewards.

Bennett and Atkins can both net a mid-round pick. Teams overvalue the draft sometimes. For what they've already shown, both players are worth something like a third-round pick. In reality, a fifth-round pick is probably their market value. That's not a great return and doesn't help Seattle in 2009. Ruskell has mostly worked from a larger plan, but the heat is on this season and he knows he is making decisions that will soon determine his employment.

The other option is to target a player that is in a similar situation on another team: A player that complements Seattle, but is superfluous on his team's roster. This is Seattle's best chance to "win" a trade. The player acquired would most likely be an offensive lineman or cornerback. Seattle is thin enough at both to consider the positions a need. Don't think that narrow though. If Seattle moves one of Atkins or Bennett, what it will want most is talent. If that talent is at another position, like, say, running back, Ruskell's history argues that will not stop him from making that move. The team could swap talent, not fix its immediate needs, but then make another move to shore up the offensive line or secondary. Who that trade partner is and who Seattle would target in a trade is beyond my knowledge, but it sure makes for an interesting 24 hours.

Seattle has too many talented defensive linemen. The most layered, deep and dynamic tackle and end rotation still could not offer enough snaps for the starters: Patrick Kerney, Colin Cole, Brandon Mebane and Cory Redding; the primary backups: Darryl Tapp, Red Bryant, Craig Terrill and Lawrence Jackson; and the super subs: Nick Reed, Michael Bennett and Baraka Atkins. Throw in Aaron Curry as a situational defensive end and Seattle has the numbers to field two starting defensive lines.

Too much talent is typically good, but Seattle's talent is too good to stash. Only Reed and Bennett have practice squad eligibility, and neither would pass through waivers unclaimed. The Seahawks own a good problem, but a problem nonetheless and problem it must unknot by tomorrow. It has three basic plays: Cut talent, lean on depth or attempt a trade.

If Seattle cuts talent it must decide which player is most dispensable. Terrill is a situational pass rusher that's been surpassed by Redding and likely Bennett. He only plays one position and only in one capacity. Terrill is 29 and entering the most expensive seasons of his contract. His $1.25 million base salary is not expensive relative to all defensive tackles, but expensive compared to tackles that play limited snaps as part of a rotation.

Terrill is a big part of the team and if expendable in a pure football sense, probably not expendable in an organizational sense. Cutting him is sensible but unlikely. Atkins would be the next likely target. A former fourth round pick now with two years experience, Atkins is a defensive end on a team overrunning with them. He is a lean, athletic project-pick that showed signs of turning the corner last season. His tools are miles ahead of Nick Reed's and better even than Michael Bennett's, but Atkins has never shown a sustained run of dominance like each has over the last four preseason games. Seattle is two deep at Atkins' position, left defensive end, but starter Redding is a free agent after this season and primary depth Jackson has yet to prove he should start. The team will likely keep Derek Walker on the practice squad, but Walker has proven valuable enough this preseason that he might be targeted by another team.

Seattle might be forced to cut someone, but it is clearly the least desirable of its options. If it cuts someone, it will likely cut Atkins and that's a bad play. The Seahawks drafted Atkins knowing his skills would take years to catch up to his tools. Dropping him after two seasons of growth, including a showing against the Patriots unmatched by Reed, Bennett or Jackson, would be aborting a near mature investment. Tim Ruskell and staff are considering this option, but only as a fallback.

Winners, Losers and Projecting
the Final 53 Man Roster

Winners

Dan Quinn: A great position coach finds hidden talent. It's perhaps the single greatest impact a position coach can have. In one draft, Quinn has found, coached up and scheme matched Nick Reed, Michael Bennett and Derek Walker. Quinn deserves some credit for Cory Redding too. Classes like this put position coaches in line for defensive coordinator positions--and head coaching positions.

Losers

Secondary: The front seven looked terrific throughout the game, but the secondary was sloppy, slow and not opportunistic. Seattle might lean on Jordan Babineaux to play two positions and keep seven defensive backs.

Courtney Taylor: Not sure he's cut, but it's very possible. I'd love to credit him for his sweet RAC on the Morrah moving pick, but we can't be sure he would have been open if not for the penalty. If he is cut, I expect him to make another team. Some receivers coach will see his athleticism and desire and give the kid a call.

Curt Menefee: It takes a special kind of genius to make sideline interviews more awkward and irritating, but Curt Menefee is that genius. Instead of sticking to pleasantries and platitudes, Menefee put on his reporter cap and got controversial. Asking Deon Butler about the poor quarterback play at Penn State or Darryl Tapp about how he feels about not starting does not inspire honest, insightful answers. It causes an athlete to bristle and be more guarded.

Seattle must cut its roster down to 75 tomorrow. This is news. It has already cut four players, Kevin Brown, Dan Curran, Shane Simmons and John Tereshinski. This is also news. Poor John Tereshinski couldn't even get the Seahawks to spell his name correctly. I've never found much drama in the final push to 53. Here are the guys, minus injury, I think are locks for the team. All 53.

Doom, gloom...rebirth?

Last season sucked. It interrupted an unprecedented run of success for the Seahawks. Seattle had made the playoffs five times before 2003 but had won only three playoff games. This season will decide if last season was an interruption or an ending. It could be either. Seattle is more than capable of again being one of the worst teams in football. It has a chance to win the Super Bowl.

Yes it does. And it's not as complicated or far fetched as it might sound.

5. Grow into a Dominant Rush Defense

I am putting the cart before the horse for a reason. Rush defense dominates in the playoffs, but it won't do much to get Seattle into the playoffs. The importance of rush defense is conditional on Seattle fulfilling the following four goals. This is the most easily attainable of the five.

It has three starters on defensive line that should be average to above average to elite at run defense for their position. I don't expect Patrick Kerney to be a big player on run defense. Its starting three linebackers could each be top-ten run defenders by season's end. There's no weakness there, and with Aaron Curry on board, Lofa Tatupu will have the wingmen to destroy the rushers he flushes out. Ken Lucas and Marcus Trufant are both good open field tacklers, and however much Josh Wilson plays, he is also an excellent open field tackler that brings some pop. Deon Grant is good from the third level and if Jordan Babineaux wins out at strong safety, Seattle will not have a single weakness against the rush.

4. Get Lucky

Seattle has some tough games ahead. Weeks three through eight are especially grueling. Wins earn playoffs, even if they aren't always the best indicator of quality. Earning home field would be huge, but even bigger would be getting a bye. The power of a playoff bye is simple: It's one less game a team must win to make the Super Bowl. To accomplish that, Seattle is going to need some close victories over tough opponents. While the 2005 squad was undoubtedly better than the 2007 squad, much of what separated them in the standings was close victories.

2005 pulled out close victories against Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas, San Francisco, New York and Tennessee. It only lost two close games, one to Washington in overtime and a meaningless week 17 game against Green Bay.

2007 was even. Seattle won close games against Philadelphia, St. Louis and Cincinatti, but none were as close as they looked, but lost close games to Arizona, Cleveland, Carolina and Atlanta. The Atlanta game was meaningless when played, but would have been meaningful if Seattle hadn't punted victories in Arizona and Carolina.

Seattle needs to scrape out some close victories. It has four sure to be punishing away games: Colts, Cowboys, Vikings and Packers. The Packers game is particularly tough, because Seattle is a moderate weather climate and Lambeau, December 27 is anything but moderate. But it can. It can split those; it can win all four. It can win all four without being the best team among the four, because Any Given Sunday.

3. Channel 2007

Seattle's dominating pass defense in 2007 wasn't all smoke and mirrors. Yes, it dominated some bad quarterbacks. No, I'm not sure Troy Smith, A.J. Feeley or Alex Smith will ever see another professional snap. But seizing an opportunity is the essence of success.

Seattle has its pass rush in 2007. Sure, there was Patrick Kerney, but Darryl Tapp, Julian Peterson, Rocky Bernard and Leroy Hill were all major contributors. Seattle doesn't have a single elite rusher like Kerney this season, but it has a better contributing cast. Tapp is around and closer to his prime. Hill should be more active. Aaron Curry won't replace Peterson, but he could be excellent on more traditional linebacker blitzes. Brandon Mebane could ascend to the lower ranks of the elite defensive tackles. Josh Wilson runs a nickel blitz like no one else in the NFL. Seattle has loaded up on situational pass rushers, and in the right spots, Cory Redding, Tapp, Craig Terrill and Nick Reed could all cause havoc. And there's some depth with upside like Lawrence Jackson, Baraka Atkins, Michael Bennett and Colin Cole.

The Seahawks may not face a jobbers row of scrubs and backups, but if the rush is there, it could make some decent to good quarterbacks channel Feeley.

2. Complete 2007

Seattle had the defense. It definitely had the passing attack. Its special teams were strong. But, good God damn did Shaun Alexander suck. Say what you will about Julius Jones, Edgerrin James and Justin Forsett, the 2009 Seahawks could not field a rusher more inept or self-defeating as Shaun Alexander circa 2007. Seattle couldn't protect a lead. It couldn't convert a first. It couldn't disguise a play. Eventually, Mike Holmgren simply told opponents the Seahawks were going to pass and pass and pass.

Consider the value added on every snap by replacing Alexander's pass blocking with Jones or James' pass blocking. The value added on ever snap by replacing Alexander's pass catching with Jones, James or Forsett's pass catching. Then, remember how bad Alexander was as a running back, and take a breath and know average beats the hell out of cripplingly awful.

1. Field a Top Ten Pass Offense

Seattle had a top ten pass offense in 2007. It built that offense on -- in descending importance -- Bobby Engram, a good pass blocking line and Matt Hasselbeck playing out of his mind. He made Engram, less than a year recovered from Graves disease, look like a Pro Bowler. Passes from Hasselbeck to Engram were the tenth most valuable connection in the NFL. Hasselbeck to Marcus Pollard was the sixth most valuable per-play quarterback to tight end connection in the NFL. Passes from Hasselbeck to D.J. Hackett were worth 100 yards above replacement. Engram is now T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Pollard is now John Carlson. Hackett is now Deon Butler. This is a better passing offense. Depending on how the line gels, it could be a full step above 2007's ninth ranked attack.

Passing offense is the single most important quality of a contender. It gets you ahead and lets you crawl back when you're behind. By putting the opponent behind, it improves the defense and helps force turnovers. It puts the clock on your side and facilitates the run game. With a healthy Hasselbeck and Sean Locklear anything near average, this is a better passing offense than 2007. A better passing offense than 2007 lifts this team to the playoffs, and in the playoffs, especially with a great rush defense, anything is possible.

Nick Reed

He's not tall. He's not heavy. He doesn't look great with his shirt off. But, at football, he's Mozart at the composition table. God bless Seattle for being in the Pacific Northwest. Yes it's the preseason, but there's no bluffing mad skills like Reed's. In whatever capacity, this guy is a player. He's going to contribute on special teams. He'll excite in nickel packages. Oh yeah, that means he's making the roster.

Winners

Michael Bennett: Not as dominant as before, but another step towards making the team. Or making a team.

Deon Butler: One good return on a broke play doesn't mean all that much, but his receiving was excellent. Owner of the most impressive play on offense.

Justin Forsett: Catching in the flat and redirecting is something he can do. Proving it's a valuable addition to the playbook, and therefore he's a valuable addition to the offense is a preseason win.

Will Herring: Showing the tackle prowess he had heretofore lacked.

Baraka Atkins: Consistently disruptive. Played the straight man to Reed's half sack.

Heater: Cover ability? Yes.

C.J. Wallace: Proving he adds attack to the special teams.

Brandon Coutu: Long field goal improves his trade value.

Jordan Babineaux: Better than Brian Russell. So. So. So much better than Brian Russell. Also, BIG PLAY!

Losers

Sean Locklear: Handled. Bull-rushed by Elvis Dumervil. Looked bad throughout and bad at everything you fear he's bad at.

Ben Obomanu: Did not make a catch and did not look good on returns.

Seattle WRs: Seattle must keep Atkins and Reed. Who does it cut?

Josh Wilson: Reinforcing he is, in fact, a nickelback.

Jordan Kent: Looking more and more like he'll never get it.
