The Packers Resign Stanley Daniels To The Practice Squad

In a minor move on Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers resigned G Stanley Daniels to the practice squad. He replaced WR Biren Ealy, who had been signed to the active roster last Saturday after G Jason Spitz went on the I.R.

Daniels was on the practice squad earlier this season, but he was released to make room for Ealy last month. He's just a big, interior offensive lineman. It's good to have an extra lineman on hand while they are dealing with so many injuries on the line.

They usually have 5 WRs on the active roster, but with both WR Jake Allen and WR Jordy Nelson back at practice this week, they've currently got 6 WRs. Both Allen and Nelson missed the game in Tampa, so Ealy got a chance to lineup on a few plays last week. But, depending on who's out with injuries this week, he's likely to be left inactive against the Cowboys.

WR Jake Allen To The Active Roster - Two New Receivers For The Practice Squad

With the season ending injury to WR Brett Swain, the Green Bay Packers added WR Jake Allen from the practice squad to the active roster.

Although Swain had done little on offense this season, mostly making his presence felt on special teams, he had a good preseason, and could have helped in the upcoming Vikings game. He didn't do much in his first game as the No. 4 WR, he was promoted after WR Jordy Nelson was injured against the Lions, but No. 3 WR James Jones did little against the Browns too. The game plan last week was to run a lot against the Browns' bad run defense. But the Vikings have a great run defense, so I wouldn't be surprised if they plan to run more 4 WR sets next week, especially if TE Jermichael Finley misses the game with his knee injury.

Allen barely made a ripple on the field during the preseason, but he showed enough to make the practice squad last month. Maybe the coaches blamed QB Brian Brohm for the bad preseason pass offense, and decided to give Allen another chance. At 6'4" he's the tallest WR on the roster, and since the Vikings don't have a cornerback over 6'0", he might be able to take advantage of his height, if he plays on Sunday.

With Allen's promotion, and depth becoming an issue at receiver, they added two WRs to the practice squad. Recently signed G Stanley Daniels was released to make room for them. Daniels was signed for depth after the initial ankle injury to LT Chad Clifton, but with the emergence of LT T.J. Lang, and the likely return of Clifton, he isn't needed at this point. I think WR Kole Heckendorf might have been signed to the practice squad instead, if he had been available, but he was recently added to the Lions' practice squad.

As to the two receivers signed: WR Patrick Williams was barely mentioned here at all after a quiet preseason, but he should be familiar with the offense and have a short learning curve. WR Biran Ealy worked with the Saints and Ravens so far this season, but spent time dropping passes for the Titans in 2008.

Tomorrow is the official beginning of the 2009 Saints season, which means today is the official end of their 2009 off-season. The Saints have come a long way since Drew's final record-breaking pass attempt hit the Superdome turf and it's been a wild ride with lots of ups and downs. I figured what better way to say our final goodbye to the long, cold, lonely months of off-season action than to reminisce one last time and take a final look at how we've gotten to today, as seen through Canal Street Chronicles.

After the jump you'll find a timeline of memorable events, good and bad, from the past eight months for both the Saints organization and for us here at CSC. I had fun putting this together and I hope you have as much fun reading it and taking that quick trip down memory lane. Feel free to share any of your memories about these events or even add your own memorable moments.

Gary Gibbs is gone - January 7, 2009

One of the first but still probably the biggest and best moves of the entire off-season. The perfect start. We'll all remember where we were when we heard the wonderful news. Only Jessie Spano could properly express my emotions the next morning.

Gregg Williams is in - January 15, 2009

It didn't take long for the Saints to find a replacement for Gibbs. Less than a week after I urged the Saints to take their time finding a new defensive coordinator, they hire Gregg Williams. Probably because Williams was Payton's top choice, so much so that he was willing to give up a quarter of a million dollars of his own salary just to make sure Gregg came to New Orleans.

Ravens To Make First Cuts Tuesday

The Baltimore Ravens will make their first official round of cuts tomorrow to get down to the NFL requirement of 75 players on their rosters. The team should be cutting around five players and I have been looking at the current roster to see who I think will be the ones to get their pink slips. No one wants to see their name in print in this type of story, so I apologize if I get it wrong, but also if I happen to get it right as well.

The guy who brings the players into Head Coach John Harbaugh's office is known as "The Turk." Not too sure why or even how they got that name, but no one wants to hear the words, "Coach wants to see you and bring your playbook."

Unfortunately, those guys getting cut on September 1st certainly knew their time was coming to the end with the team as the Ravens will have to make much deeper cuts on September 5th, as all NFL teams must be down to their opening day roster of 53 players by 5pm on Saturday. When the final round of cuts are announced, there are sure to be some surprising names among them and some very disappointed players will leave the team. Hopefully, some of those guys will be re-signed to the Practice Squad and perhaps the team will even add a new player of two after cuts are made around the league.

Some of the former Ravens may find new homes with other teams, as our linebackers will be coveted by many teams due to the fact that we have a glut in that position and will most likely release players who could just as easily start for other teams in the league.

There is a chance that the team may try to protect a couple of guys by placing them on our Injured Reserve (IR) List, which means they will not be able to play the entire 2009 season, but will be protected by the team. Their salaries will count against our cap and they will be paid, but will just have to sit on the sidelines all season and get their chance again when the 2010 season comes around.

On BaltimoreRavens.com, I count 82 players on the roster, but that includes the retired Willie Anderson. However, Anderson hasn't officially retuired by sending in his paperwork to the NFL Offices, so he is still on our roster. If we are hoping for some reason that he comes out of retirement to add additional depth to this offensive line, then I will keep him on my list of 75 players - for now.

The guys I am looking for the Ravens to release tomorrow are: WR's Thomas White and Bradon Godfrey, DT Nader Abdallah, LB Tony Fein, QB Drew Willy and CB K.J. Gerard. This list has six players and if they only cut five, then perhaps I'd take Gerard off of the list, but if they cut as many as seven players, I might add Willie Anderson to that group. Either way, perhaps a surprise tomorrow but nothing that should affect this team which has looked so good this far into pre-season.

POST PUBLICATION NOTE: The Ravens made three cuts this morning and they were WR Bradon Godfrey, QB Drew Willy and WR Biren Ealy. Pretty close picks by me. Two more coming by tomorrow. See comments for link (Thanks adh!).

Training Camp 7/31

Today was the first day that all veterans and rookies had to participate in training camp. Held in Westminster, MD and McDaniel College which it has been since the days of the Baltimore Colts, it was a mad house today of fans and fun. 98 Rock was there early to have a pre-game show complete with a free breakfast and even ice cold beer served at 7:45 in the morning!

I have been going to the Ravens training camps since I was very young, and this was by far the most intense day of practice that I have ever been a part of. There had to have been around 10,000 fans and I even heard one gentleman sitting next to me say "There are more people here than there was at the Orioles game last night." Here is what I thought of today's practice after the jump.

Kickers Grahmn Gano and Steven Hauschka were neck and neck all day today in the kicking competition, but it seemed like Gano got the best of Hauschka. Gano was 4 for 4 on a field goal kicking drill and Hauschka missed one. But a drill that I found rather interesting involved both kickers standing along side the goal post. Here, they each got 3 chances and were trying to hit the posts from about 20 yards away on purpose. Gano was the first to get it and it took Hauschka about 6-7 tries to finally hit his first post. Gano looks to have the stronger leg, as Hauschka badly came up short on what looked to be at the most a 60 yard field goal. Gano also looked to have an extremely strong leg on kick offs.
In the beginning of the practice, the WR were lining up and practicing getting acceleration as if the ball was snapped. They stood in two lines, but what got me thinking was the order by which the players lined up. It was Clayton and Williams to go first, followed by Smith and Harper. I thought that the way this drill was set up is telling us that a possible line-up as of right now is Clayton, Williams, Smith, Harper. But it is still early. However, WR's such as Biren Ealy and Eron Riley showed some serious skill today, particularly Ealy. He made many catches on the tips of his toes and was burning our CB's on multiple routes
The 3 Quaterbacks that are currently on the roster, Joe Flacco, Troy Smith and John Beck, all impressed me today. Each one of these guys can really get the ball out of their hand quickly and with some force behind it. There were multiple passes put on the money by these 3, including a one handed grab by Ray Rice and a ball threaded through the defense into Heap's hands. The QB's also seemed to be able to throw the deep ball very well.
Based on physical image, there are a few players that stand out immensly. WR Marcus Smith is huge. He looks like a linebacker playing WR. Huge legs and enormous arms. His footwork looks very solid and he is definitely not afraid of going across the middle. Kelly Gregg has a body type that you will not see anywhere else. He seems to have lost a little bit of his belly, but he looks like one solid muscle, sort of like a rhino. As most of us know, Dawan Landry is ripped. Well, he is ripped! I cannot believe that he is only 208 pounds, because his arms and neck make him look close to 240. If Landry put on 20 pounds, he could be a middle linebacker in this league.
Our secondary may be the best this team has ever seen, definitely the fastest. Some had their struggles, such as Frank Walker who got beat on a few passes, but players like Dominique Foxworth and Lardarius Webb blankted their Wideout all day. Webb looks to have the most fluid hip motion and best ability to change direction of any of the CB's. He stuck with Justin Harper very well on one pass that looked to be an easy catch. But Webb used his speed to get in front of Harper, creating an incomplete pass on a long ball. I was very impressed with the physicality of Foxworth also. On a pass to Demetrius Williams on the sideline, Foxworth was with D-Will the whole way there, but Williams seemed to create space at the last moment. As Williams went up for the ball, Foxworth got in Williams' face and forced D-Will to catch the ball out of bounds. He looks to have very good press coverage for being a man to man DB his whole career.
The first string Offensive Line looks incredible. They are big, strong, fast and maybe the most athletic in the league. With Matt Birk at Center, you can really tell why he has been a pro-bowl selection so many times. His fundamentals are perfect and having such a great veteran on this extremely young O-Line will only help everyone else. Oher looked great today as well. He is a physical freak and for someone who weighs 300 pounds, it really does not look like he has too much body fat. At one point in a 11 on 11 drill, Gaither was lined up at Right Tackle and Oher was at Right Gaurd. This move had Heap back on the O-Line at the LT position.
On the other hand, the 2nd string of O-Lineman was extremely sloppy this morning. On one particular drive, they had 3 false starts in about 5 snaps. They missed multiple blocks and the QB taking the snaps would have gotten destroyed had the defensive players had the chance. Their run blocking was not on point and these guys really need some work.

Well, unlike Bruce who has a great position to take great photos 6 inches away from the players, I was in the bleachers with the rest of barbaian fans snapping away. Here are a few photos from my spot in the corner of the endzone.

More Notes From Ravens Friday AM Practice

Troy Smith was QB-ing with a trio of tall wideouts on either side of him, Ernie Wheelwright, Justin Harper and Eron Riley, all over 6'3" in height. Ray Rice made a nice one handed grab of a Troy Smith sideline pass. Joe Flacco had a long completion to recently signed wideout Biren Ealy while Demetrius Williams caught a 17 yarder from Flacco just afterwards. Willis McGahee ran up the middle into a group of defenders, and you could hear the thuds of full contact on the sidelines.

Mark Clayton pushed off CB Frank Walker to make a sideline grab and then was taken down on a hard tackle by Dawan Landry. The referees called Clayton for interference, as even the zebras need Training Camp.. A misdirection running play had RT Michael Oher knocking DT Justin Bannan to the ground.

Troy threw a bullet to WR Justin Harper, who stiff armed the helmet off of cornerback Chris Carr's head. Mark Clayton went up to grab a high pass from Flacco and was unceremoniously slammed to the ground by rookie CB Lardarius Webb.

I notice that while most of the other players trot on and off the field, Kelly Gregg sprints out every time like a kid who is just happy to be playing the game.

Webb's good defense got kudos on the sidelines from Ray. Troy Smith rolls out and throws a short crossing pass to rookie TE Davon Drew that goes off his fingertips on a pass that he should have caught.

Last part of practice is the kickoff drill, with Graham Gano booming shots into the end zone.

My new "buudy," Haruki Nakamura came off the field in front of me, sees me and give me the cool nod of acknowledgement. Justin Harper fist-bumped me after practice on his way tot he locker room. There's former Baltimore Colt great Lenny Moore, talking football technique on the side.

As the players head to either the locker room or do to interviews, I see one little girl up front against the fence. She can't be much older than six, wearing a pink #9 Steve McNair jersey. She has casts on both arms due to two broken wrists. Hopefully, she'll get to be first in line and receive whatever autographs she wants.

Lots of players head over to sign autographs for the fans, which was impressive. See my FanPost for my one-on-ones that I had.

I won't bother to bore you with the same info. Actually, the only thing I will add is that I am impressed by the swift and resolute manner in which the organization dealt with these players. Sure, this was just a silly stunt gone a little too far by a couple of drunk young kids. But rules are rules. Making an example out of these two guys sets a good tone for the rest of the season. If you're a liability, you're gone. I applaud Loomis and Co. for the great job they continue to do in maintaining a locker room made up of only high-quality characters and few distractions.

LAST week, I talked to Duane Akina, assistant head coach/defensive backs for the Texas Longhorns. He coached Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil at Arizona... Akina shared a funny story about Vince Young's recruitment out of high school.

Young was playing in the Texas high school state playoffs. Akina was at one of his games. Late in the fourth quarter, with his team leading, Young came on the field on defense, playing free safety... Akina liked what he saw so much that he told Texas Coach Mack Brown, hoping to get Young in his secondary the following fall, instead of at quarterback for the Longhorns.

Brown's reply via text: "Don’t even think about it."

Tennessee Titans Morning Links: Vince Young Is Still Stackin' Paper To The Ceiling Edition

On the heels of the Kerry Collins news this weekend, Adam Schefter reports that VY's roster spot is safe and he'll still be seen as the team's long-term solution. VY's contract is pretty toleable in 2009, but he'll have to be starting and starting well to make the pile of money he's due in 2010.

As was reported last night, the Titans and Haynesworth's agent have been chatting about the outline of a potential deal. There's no way to really tell the progress of negotiations, and don't expect any reports of substance until after the Super Bowl as the Commissioner's office has historically put a gag on all major league news until after the league's greatest pageant is complete.

Everyone's former favorite practice squad WR Biren Ealy is gone: he'll be dropping preseason passes with the New Orleans Saints next year. Ealy seemed like a good kid, and maybe a change of scenery will be just what he needs to breakthrough and make an active roster.

Titans defensive/quality control coach Matt Burke will be joining Jim Schwartz's staff in Detroit as the linebackers coach... so, good for him.

Tennessee Titans

WR — The Titans were widely expected to take a wide receiver at the top of the ’08 draft, but they took RB Chris Johnson instead. It’s hard to argue with that pick. However, it would be no surprise if this were the year the Titans looked hard at drafting a wideout in Round One.

DT — If Albert Haynesworth is re-signed, this is no longer a pressing need, considering the way rookie Jason Jones emerged at the end of the season.

QB — Whether the Titans add a passer probably comes down to whether they can re-sign Kerry Collins. If he departs, the Titans have to think about who will back up Vince Young.
