Last year, on the day of final cuts, when the first victims were announced, I posted them on Big Blue View, and wound up sitting in front of the computer all day long as the cuts just kept flowing in.

So here we go again.

We'll leave this thread up all day, and I'll just post the cuts here as the day goes on. If there are any big names cut around the NFL, I will post them here as well.

Beware "The Turk"!

UPDATE: 11:25 Michael Matthews and CB DeAndre Wright have been cut

OK, before I get to the good stuff I am giving myself a 'kudos.' Getting to the end of last night's Giants-Patriots exhibition was torture, but I managed. Without even falling asleep once. A miracle! Anyway, here is your final pre-season 'Kudos & Wet Willies.'

Kudos to ...

Lawrence Tynes: Might be the only time other than games after which he kicks a game-winner that a kicker will get first 'kudos.' Tynes kicked a 46-yard field goal and then made a tackle on special teams. Even more impressive for a wimpy little kicker, he threw the returner out of bounds and got himself a 15-yard penalty. Tom Coughlin won't agree, and neither would I in a regular-season game. But, it was pre-season and I enjoyed Tynes' macho moment.

Receivers: What was that about the Giants not having receivers who could make plays? There were a lot of impressive performances last night. Oh, and I said receivers because I am including tight end Kevin Boss among the impressive players. Let's look at some of the top performances.

Sinorice Moss -- Two catches for 35 yards and two touchdowns, one from Eli Manning and one from David Carr. For good measure, Moss added a 31-yard kickoff return. If this indeed was a fight to the finish between Moss and Derek Hagan, Moss wins by TKO. Hagan made a nice special teams tackle, but had just one catch for 8 yards and dropped a potential touchdown pass right on the goal line.

Domenik Hixon made just one catch, but it was a beauty. Hixon made a leaping catch while fighting off a defender for a 38-yard gain.

Hakeem Nicks had just one catch, but it went for 64 yards and a score. Nicks. also well covered, made a beautiful adjustment to the ball, snagged it and ran away from the defense.

Kevin Boss made two nice receptions on the opening scoring drive. I hope the Giants remember to make him a key part of the passing attack beginning Sept. 13 against the Redskins.

Mario Manningham had four catches for 74 yards. He ran good routes, and made the plays on everything thrown in his direction. Can't do much better than that.

William Beatty: The rookie left tackle started in place of David Diehl, played most of the way and held up well. I don't think his name was called all night, and that is a good thing.

Allen Patrick: I still don't think he has a shot at anything other than the practice squad, but he ran hard and totaled 50 yards on just 8 carries.

Antonio Pierce: For just getting on the field. Hooray!

Tutan Reyes: The veteran offensive lineman slid over to center when Adam Koets sprained an ankle, and did the job. I feel much better about the backup center position after watching that.

Travonti Johnson: One bad penalty, but eight tackles and played pretty well overall. I'm still not sold on him, but he has a good shot to be a backup safety.

David Carr: Went 6-for-6 for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Looked composed. David Philips, wherever you are, I know you are smiling.

Wet Willies to ...

DeAndre Wright: Got smoked by veteran Greg Ellis for a long pass that set up a New England touchdown late in the first half. I shouldn't worry about it, though. Wright will be lucky to get a practice squad invite.

Andre Woodson: If there was any doubt about Woodson's fate on the 53-man roster, he sealed it last night. I don't see any chance he makes the team. He threw a first-half Pick Six after locking in on his receiver, and ended up a woeful 6-for-19 for 98 yards. I can't give Rhett Bomar 'kudos,' since he was just 2-for-7 with a goal line interception in a paltry five minutes of work. Bomar, though, had three passes (two to Shaun Bodiford and one to Ramses Barden) that probably should have been completed and he ran twice for 27 yards, including a 16-yard scramble for a first down. He at least looked like a professional quarterback, seemed comfortable and showed he can make the throws.

Kenny Ingram: Made one tackle and whiffed at least twice. Before the game I thought he had a shot at the practice squad. Now, I'm not so sure.

The Giants have to trim their roster from 80 to 75 by Tuesday, as do all of the other teams in the NFL. The first move will be to put running back Andre Brown on injured reserve, meaning they have to drop four players.

Who will go? These are the guys I would cut right now if I was making the decisions -- which, of course, I'm not.

David Tyree -- I still don't see any way this classy hero of the Super Bowl 42 makes this team. Tyree still wants to play, and perhaps the best thing the Giants could do for him is to let go now. That way he has a legitimate shot to hook on somewhere else before teams finalize their rosters.

Orrin Thompson -- The 6-foot-6, 320-pound rookie guard from Duke has zero shot at making the team. Actually, he is one of several backup offensive lineman about whom that could be said. Actually, you could cut several of them rght now and be done with it. The only problem there is you want to get through Thursday's pre-season finale against New England without having to use the starters very much. So, you need to keep some of these guys. Thompson, though, can go now.

Robert Henderson -- The 2008 7th-round pick is a spare defensive end on a team loaded with spare defensive ends. Another guy who has no chance to make the team, and has really done nothing in camp. Time to cut ties.

Shaun Bodiford -- The Giants have 10 receivers on the roster, and Bodiford is No. 10 on the list. He has no shot at making the 53-man roster, and the Giants still have a lot of other guys they need to look at Thursday night. Bodiford is expendable, even if the Giants also release Tyree.

So, what do you think of my list? Let me know what four players you would cut -- and why.

Here is your Monday afternoon practice report from New York Giants training camp at UAlbany.

Let's just say it was brutally obvious that the intensity was ratcheted up a few notches this afternoon, the first full practice since Saturday's embarrassing pre-season loss to Chicago. There was heavy hitting, and more pad-popping than at any time in camp.

Oh, and two fights. Or near fights. The first involved cornerback Bruce Johnson and wide receiver Shaun Bodiford when they got tangled up, went to the ground and came up mauling each other WWE style.

The second also involved Bruce Johnson. I didn't see what started it, but I did see tight end Darcy Johnson take a couple of swings at him, which drew a lot of players before Brandon Jacobs stepped in to play peacemaker.

Bruce Johnson, who is fighting for a roster spot, was obviously testy today. After the two fights, he knocked a pass away from David Tyree and gave the 'throat-slash' sign, which immediately drew the ire of the offense -- and the coaching staff.

Here are some other highlights of Monday's practice.

No 1 pick Hakeem Nicks has had a mostly quiet camp, fighting through a hamstring issue. Nothing quiet about Nicks' work Monday, though. He was, quite simply, the most dominant player on the field. Nicks made two leaping, one-handed catches Monday. One on a long ball down the right sideline from Rhett Bomar when he was well-covered by, who else, Bruce Johnson. The second was a red zone fade from Andre Woodson when he hauled in a pass in the corner of the end zone. Nicks also caught a long ball down the left sideline from Woodson when he ran by DeAndre Wright. Pretty obvious the coaches noticed Nicks' work. He ran with the first team in three-wide sets during the two-minute drill near the end of practice.

Mathias Kiwanuka made what is probably the defensive play of camp during 11-on-11 work. Lined up at left end, Kiwanuka picked off a bubble screen for Mario Manningham for what would have been a touchdown. Kiwanuka practically took the ball out of Eli Manning's hands. I don't know if Kiwi made a fabulous move, or Kareem McKenzie made a horrendous block, but it was an awesome athletic play.

Eli had three passes picked off today, incidentally. Oh, and there was a fumble on a handoff from Eli to Ahmad Bradshaw. Yuck! Not what you want to see this far into camp.

Derek Hagan, the Giants' practice superstar, made several nice grabs today. Now if he could only translate that to a game he might actually make the team.

Very few opportunities for Rhett Bomar, but he threw a few nice balls. A good sideline out to Taye Biddle was probably his best throw.

Rocky Bernard provided some good news on the defensive tackle front, making a couple of nice stops, including getting into the backfield to drop Danny Ware for a loss.

Dave Tollefson had what would have been a sack of David Carr when he beat William Beatty.

INJURY NOTES: Kenny Phillips, Aaron Ross, Chris Snee and Rich Seubert all worked today. Ross was limitied a bit, but the rest went fully. Antonio Pierce, Michael Boley and Danny Clark just did a few individual drills.

So, Jim already posted a couple of updates for you from the morning session. Thanks to him for that. My cell phone does not have Internet access (yes, I'm an old codger in some ways), so I can't update until practice is over.

Anyway, here goes my Day 1, Practice 1 report. I will go thru some 'firsts.'

First Eli Manning ugliness of training camp. His first two passes of the day were terrible. An overthrow of Domenik Hixon on a short ball, and the wobbler into triple coverage Jim already mentioned. That ball was not picked off, but it got worse for Eli. He made some good throws, but ended up with three balls intercepted this morning. Ugh! That is not what I wanted to see.

The first drop of camp was by David Tyree, on a pass from Andre Woodson.

The first touchdown pass of the morning was a long ball from David Carr to Sinorice Moss. Moss ran by everybody, and I couldn't tell who was supposed to be covering him. Moss also beat Terrell Thomas deep later on, but could not haul in a slightly off the mark pass from Eli. By the way, it was a rough morning for Thomas, who was beaten both short and long several times by several different receivers.

The first false start of the morning came courtesy of Chris Snee. Apparently, Snee was not paying attention when a fan yelled 'no false starts' at him when he entered the field.

Snee's false start was immediately followed by the first off side of camp, with Jay Alford jumping across the line. Both plays drew groans from the fans in the stands.

The first interception of camp was a diving grab by Kenny Phillips of a wayward pass by -- who else? -- Manning. Phillips and Corey Webster later combined for the best play of the morning. Webster tipped away a deep ball from Eli intended for Steve Smith, and KP snagged it for his second pick of the morning.

The first political appearance of the morning came when Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings strolled across the sideline about halfway thru camp. Wave goodbye, Jerry. You probably won't be seeing the Giants in Albany next year.

The first explosion of camp from Tom Coughlin (at least that I heard) came the second time Andre Woodson and Adam Koets screwed up the quarterback-center exchange. "That's two ... get the ball back," yelled TC, who then told Woodson and Koets to stay after practice and get it right.

One other first. Yours truly was the first reporter to hit the field this morning. I was here too damn early, as a matter of fact. That isn't happening again. I need my beauty sleep!

A few other impressions

Ramses Barden was terrific this morning. He made three consecutive catches, two in traffic. On one of those, he got absolutely mugged by Aaron Ross but still took the ball away. Ross may have wrestled the ball away when the two hit the ground, but on those plays it was easy to see why the Giants think Barden could be a short-yardage and goal line weapon.

Stoney Woodson made a tremendous play on a long ball for Shaun Bodiford, tipping away a David Carr pass at the last second. A bit later, though, Woodson got schooled by Derek Hagan for a long touchdown from Rhett Bomar.

Bomar threw the ball crisply, on both some short and long balls. IMHO he is wayyyyy ahead of Woodson in the fight for the third quarterback spot.

It's difficult to judge running backs in these non-contact drills, but Ahmad Bradshaw looked really quick.

Osi Umenyiora and Barry Cofield will not practice this afternoon.

Fred Robbins is, of course, on the PUP list. With the huge ice pack he was wearing on his left knee, you would have to guess he won't be on the field any time soon.

I will have more for you later as I continue to try and get the lay of the land around here. This afternoon's practice goes from 3:15-5:15. I might try to get some pictures for you, even though I look silly with my little digital next to some of these professional photographers.

[NOTE: Don't forget to scan through the transcripts from all on Sunday's interviews on the 'Transcripts' page. Lots of good stuff in there.]

<![endif]-->In our continuing look at the position battles that will take place for the Giants in training camp, today we will take a look at the Wide Receivers:

Currently on the roster:

Ramses Barden, Taye Biddle, Shaun Bodiford, Derek Hagan, Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss, Hakeem Nicks, Micah Rucker, Steve Smith, David Tyree.

Quick Breakdown:

Ramses Barden: 3rd round pick, the Giants are looking at him to replace the "Lone Gunman" as Eli's big target. Can he avoid the dreaded "Giants 3rd round WR curse" is the big question.

Taye Biddle: Spent last season on the Giants practice squad, and that's the only way he collects a paycheck from the Giants this year as well. Also recovering from a shooting injury, not self-inflicted.

Shaun Bodiford: will be lucky to survive the first cuts. Not trying to be harsh, but the Giants are simply too deep at this position.

Derek Hagan: signed last year for depth after being cut by the Miami Dolphins. He is a former 3rd round pick of the Dolphins, with hands bad enough to play for the Mets.

Domenik Hixon: Coming into just his 4th season in the league, has excelled as a returner, and shown flashes when pressed into action on offense. I expect big things from Hixon this year.

Mario Manningham: I think Manningham needs to have a strong camp to make the team, after getting hurt early in training camp last year, falling behind, and contributing nothing all season long, unless you count that 78-yard loss on an end around against Philly.

Sinorice Moss: Speaking of guys who need to have a strong camp, this applies to no one more than Sinorice Moss. We've rarely seen him healthy, and when he has been healthy he hasn't produced much. I think the hourglass is out of sand here, time's up, Sinorice.

Hakeem Nicks: Looks like the Giants first round pick in 2009 will be given every opportunity to win the starting WR position.

Micah Rucker: The undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois spent time on the Giants practice squad last season. A lot of people seem to see Rucker as a sleeper, his size and speed make him an attractive possibility. Could be a surprise on the roster in September.

Steve Smith: Rising star, and right now is Eli's most reliable target.

David Tyree: The Giants were able to delay an inevitable tough decision last season by placing Tyree on the IR after knee surgery. Unfortunately, I think Tyree and the Giants will part ways before the season starts. I think he has always been underrated as a WR, his Super Bowl heroics notwithstanding. He'll catch on somewhere.

I'm not going to project out the depth chart, too many variables with the WRs this season, so I will just give you who I expect to see on the roster:

Projected WRs on the roster:

Smith, Hixon, Nicks, Barden, Manningham, Rucker

Practice Squad:

Taye Biddle

I think the casual fan would wonder who those guys were. Of the seven restricted free agents this season, all of them were offered a contract for 2009, meaning the Packers retain the right to match any offers for them, except for these two guys:

WR Shaun Bodiford. I always rooted for him; disadvantaged kid who was a long shot to make it in the NFL. He was hurt for all of 2008. He's shown some flash as a kick returner, but he's not as good as either Tramon Williams or Will Blackmon, and there is no room for him at receiver.

TE Tory Humphrey. He was the early front runner to become the starting TE before the 2007 season, but he got injured that summer and missed the entire season. When he got back in 2008, TE Donald Lee had become entrenched as the starter and they used a 3rd round pick on TE Jermichael Finley. Humphrey was given some touches early in the season as Lee's backup, but after the bye week, Finley started taking his playing time. It wouldn't be a shock to see him return, but it won't be until after the draft or as a future candidate for the practice squad.

With one of the youngest teams in the NFL, there aren't a lot of veteran free agent mistakes on the roster and there aren't a lot of unrestricted free agents either. Packers.com finally got their 2009 free agent list updated.

Unsigned

Whether you like any of these guys or not, there is no one on this list that will draw a lot of interest from other teams. Bigby would have after the 2007 season, but not after his injury plagued 2008. They will all be offered contracts, but they all might receive the lowest tender allowed.

Unsigned

Michael Montgomery

Unsigned

T

Mark Tauscher

Unsigned

I'm not a fan of Cole, so I hope he isn't pursued. At 276 lbs. Mike Montgomery is undersized as a 3-4 defensive end, so the Packers will probably make no effort to resign him. When healthy, Tauscher is arguably the team's best offensive lineman. I really hope the Packers resign him, but he shouldn't receive a huge contract since I doubt many teams will be pursuing a free agent who just tore his ACL in December.

Breaking down the Bengals wide receivers

First and foremost, I wanted to do a "Flashback" story in mid-December 2007 that referenced a post by PFT.

A league source tells us that there is growing animosity in the Bengals locker room toward receivers Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Per the source, both are yelling "all the time" at quarterback Carson Palmer, but coach Marvin Lewis doesn't say or do anything about it. Players are also upset that the two receivers are trying to "run the team."

The situation reminds us of the latter days of the Denny Green era in Minnesota, where receivers Cris Carter and Randy Moss were berating quarterback Daunte Culpepper and operating under a separate set of rules.

Now, truth be told, nothing came of it. And one has to consider that PFT is partially rumor, partially truth, all based on sources that either written in newspapers or unnamed in PFT's circle. Still, when it happened, you had to admit that there's a possibility of truth; not easily tossed aside for blind denials. Both receivers are extremely emotional, and if the team, or one of the players, isn't doing what they believe should be done to win, then you had to consider this partially true. My reason for saying partially true is because it wasn't followed up, nor confirmed.

I wrote before the 2008 NFL Draft that "A scenario does exist that the Bengals could lose their their three best wide receivers that combined for 69 receiving touchdowns since 2005 -- 80% of Palmer's 86 passing touchdowns." This was when Henry was dealing with his last (or latest) legal issue, Chad Johnson during his campaign to get traded and T.J. Houshmandzadeh the final season of his contract.

Fast forward to now. We can adjust the presumption to commit that Henry will be with the Bengals in 2009, and there's a strong argument for Johnson returning, save for Drew Rosenhaus' manipulating letter-writing skills.

All things being known, we can preview the position to look like this before free agency in two weeks.

Chad Johnson

Chris Henry

Andre Caldwell

Jerome Simpson

Antonio Chatman

Mario Urrutia

Maurice Purify

Glenn Holt is a restricted free agent, and until he's signed, you have to consider that the Bengals may not offer him a deal.

It's not the most experienced list, and there's noise that's both legit and very loud about Jerome Simpson's potential based on anti-Mike Brown arguments. Henry has the physical attributes to be a hellva receiver, but not the mental fortitude to even be the team's number two. Andre Caldwell seems likely to be the team's best option in the slot and Antonio Chatman, when (lack of) durability isn't sucking his playing time dry, has shown to be effective enough to warrant playing time. Urrutia and Purify were on the team's practice squad in 2008 and it has to be assumed, without including the unexpected, that they won't break into the 53-man roster.

In truth, it's a weaker roster without Houshmandzadeh -- that much is way too obvious. However, there's also unknowns with several guys that could surprise us in 2009. The truth of the matter is, this is the wide receiver group heading into next season.

Considering the Bengals could go after a wide receiver in the draft (not the first two rounds for sure based on deeper needs), or after free agents with a list that includes:

 <col width="112" />
 <col width="88" span="4" />

Bryant

Antonio

Buccaneers

UFA

Clayton

Michael

Buccaneers

UFA

Colbert

Keary

Lions

UFA

Copper

Terrance

Ravens

The 2008 season's over. Let's start speculating about 2009! Free agency comes first. It begins on February 27th. The first order of business; take care of your own free agents. Who should the Packers keep? The following is a combined list based on info from KFFL and Ask The Commish:

Player Name

Position

FA Status

Mike Montgomery

DE/DT

UFA

Mark Tauscher

RT

UFA

Atari Bigby

S

RFA

Jarrett Bush

CB

RFA

Jason Hunter

DE

RFA

Shaun Bodiford

WR

RFA

J.J. Jansen

LS

ERFA

Tramon Williams

CB

ERFA

UFA=Unrestricted Free Agent.

RFA=Restricted Free Agent.

ERFA=Exclusive Rights Free Agent.

Actually, the KFFL list is questionable. They listed a couple guys I've never heard of who are definitely not on the current roster, and they also included LB Brady Poppinga who signed a 5 year extension a few months ago. Also, they listed DE/DT Mike Montgomery and that's the only time I've seen his name mentioned anywhere.

Montgomery is someone I've been neglecting when discussing the switch to the 3-4. I've never been a big fan of his, but after DE Cullen Jenkins was lost for the season and DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was released, Montgomery got some playing time and several starts at right DE. He ended up playing the best football of his career over the last nine games in 2008. And as someone who was asked to bulk up last season to play more inside at tackle, he has the size play end in a 3-4. Hopefully the KFFL list is wrong and he's not a unrestricted free agent yet. Then we can see how he plays in 2009 in a 3-4 before deciding whether he should stay.

Otherwise, RT Mark Tauscher is the big name on the list. But since he blew out his knee in December, I'm not sure he'll even be 100% by week 1. Hopefully he is resigned, but hopefully on a 1 year contract to prove he's healthy (think RB Ahman Green after the 2005 season).

I doubt any team will make an offer to S Atari Bigby after his injury plagued 2008 season, so he should return. But if someone did go after him, then it could be a tough choice depending on the size of the contract. CB Jarrett Bush seemed to commit a special teams penalty every week, and he lost his job as the nickel CB to CB Tramon Williams last preseason, so it wouldn't be a big loss if he isn't offered a new contract. DE Jason Hunter is always the lowest paid guy on the roster, but he's managed to keep a NFL roster spot the last two seasons, so he should be back. WR Shaun Bodiford was on I.R. for all of 2008 and I don't expect he'll be offered a contract.

LS J.J. Jansen barely played before he got hurt, but he could get offered a contract to provide some competition in camp. CB Tramon Williams isn't going anywhere.
