Here are some of the stories making the rounds of the Inter-Google today about our New York Giants.

In case you missed this one, New York Giants reserve linebacker Gerris Wilkinson had wrist surgery Monday and might end up on Injured Reserve.

My take: Wilkinson is a guy who the Giants had high hopes for a couple of seasons ago. He just can't seem to put together a full season, though. Personally, I didn't understand why Wilkinson was active and Bryan Kehl didn't dress Sunday against the Chargers. I guess that won't be an issue anymore.

In a rather long-winded way, Filip Bondy of the New York Daily News said the only difference between this Giants team and the 2007 championship team is that this team has not made the big play at the right time.

Suddenly the Giants can't even win when they are doing nearly everything they should be doing.

You can rip Coughlin for taking the three points a couple of times, when he might have tried for seven. You can argue that Eli Manning might have looked downfield a bit more, instead of always accepting what was left for him underneath. But really, for the most part, this is how the Giants marched all the way to a Super Bowl title not so long ago. They outgained the Chargers by nearly 80 yards, owned possession of the ball for nearly 38 minutes.

This is what we wanted from them.

That 2007 championship team also took what was given. The difference was that those Giants made the big defensive stop, or that one big play on offense. David Tyree caught a football on his helmet. This team doesn't do that. This one gives up the decisive touchdown drive, leaves the receiver wide open in the end zone in the final minute. It misses the sack that Michael Strahan might have finished.

Vinny DiTrani of NorthJersey.com ponders the long and pothole-filled road the Giants have to traverse to get the playoffs.

We all have our opinions of what has gone wrong with the New York Giants the past four weeks.

I figured I would look around the Inter-Google and sample what others are saying. I am going to present these to you without comment, since I am pretty much commented out right now. See who, and what, you agree with.

Blame the players, not the coverage -- NFL.com
In looking at the Giants' final sequence of calls, they used a two-deep, man under scheme that placed their corners in press coverage with inside technique at the line of scrimmage. The coverage is designed to allow the corners to undercut all underneath routes, while the two deep safeties are positioned with enough depth to prevent the quarterback from going deep. However, New York's corners didn't keep San Diego's wideouts from getting to the middle of the field. The easy access allowed Rivers to move the ball on an assortment of short throws. When the Giants opted to bring pressure, the defenders didn't hug up to their assigned receivers and Rivers was able to squeeze the ball into tight windows before the defender could arrive. While observers have been critical of the team's play-calling in recent weeks, it has been the poor execution by the defenders that has the Giants in a four-game losing streak.

Giants didn't play to win -- Clark Judge
The New York Giants have themselves to blame for their fourth consecutive loss. When you hold a three-point lead, have the ball third-and-goal at your opponent's 9 and there's just over two minutes left, you don't play it safe. You throw for the end zone to put that opponent away. The Giants didn't and suffered the consequences.

Giants line play lacking -- National Football Post
At the end of the game, the Giants put the burden of winning on their defensive line’s ability in the two-minute drill, and they failed. Look no further than the G-Men’s offensive and defensive lines as the main reason they’re on a four-game losing streak. They didn’t protect well, and even though they pressured Philip Rivers all day, they weren’t able to make plays at crunch time.

Season is on life support -- Gary Myers
Even though the Giants played better than they had in getting outscored 112-61 the last three weeks by the Saints, Cardinals and Eagles, and even though seven games remain to turn this around, the season is now officially on life support.

There have been other very difficult losses in the Coughlin era, of course, but with the season already spiraling out of control, it doesn't get much worse than Sunday's 21-20 defeat to the Chargers.

Let the Sheridan watch begin - Peter King - SI.com
I don't have a good feeling about Bill Sheridan long-term as the Giants' defensive coordinator.

Giants have themselves to blame - NYTimes.com
Two seasons ago, the Giants won the Super Bowl with the help of a miracle play when Manning escaped a sure sack and hit receiver David Tyree, who made the catch of a lifetime to set up the winning score.

The Giants were good that night and lucky. They came out of nowhere to win the Super Bowl and spent the next season proving to cynics that they were for real. But this season, injuries and a defense that seems lost and out of sync have pushed the Giants to the brink.

After the Giants’ loss last week in Philadelphia, Justin Tuck complained that the defense was thinking too much and not reacting. And Coach Tom Coughlin has complained that Manning is spending too much time with "the chess game" before the snap.

Last season, when it seemed they were rolling, the Giants got a bad break with Plaxico Burress. This season they have been hit by injuries and breaks that consistently have gone the other way. "It seems like, to be honest with you, we’ve got to get some of these things going our way," a frustrated Coughlin said. "This loss tonight, no matter what the circumstances, no matter if we were sitting there undefeated, this would have been a very hard loss. It was very difficult for me emotionally to come in there after that loss. We were in such great position to win and then to lose it like that."

It's Friday, and that means time for my weekly swap of questions with Ernie Palladino. As usual, we have a common set of questions. Ernie's answers are below. Mine are over at Ernie's Giants Beat.

1. Is it better or worse that the Giants are playing a hated division rival on the road following two stinkers in a row?

Ernie's Answer: It's absolutely better. You want a good way to stop thinking about a blowout in New Orleans and a great opportunity lost against Arizona? Try filling your head with an upcoming game against the hated Eagles in The Linc. Remember, this is the squad that knocked the Giants out of the playoffs last year, the one where Donovan McNabb showed them up with his phone escapades on the Giants' own sidelines. Think those guys don't remember that? Believe me, don't downplay the revenge factor of having lost their last two meetings against the Eagles last year. Those two losses in a row seem far, far away right now.

2. What is the Giants' true identity, a run-first or pass-first team?

Ernie's Answer: Tom Coughlin may say it's a run-first team, and he most likely believes it. But let's face it. The NFL is a passing league right now, and a run-first team at this point means at best an even split between the ground and the air. Now throw in the fact that his offensive coordinator, Kevin Gilbride, seemingly can't wait to put Eli Manning in the air. The last game was a perfect example. Brandon Jacobs finally appeared to be breaking out of his early-season doldrums, knocking out four, five, seven yards a pop. But as soon as the Giants fell behind the Cardinals 17-14, Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw all but disappeared from the offense. From that point, Manning went back to pass 22 times and handed off just 10, one of which was fumbled by Bradshaw on the next-to-last drive. It seems the pass-first philosophy has been well-embedded in Manning's psyche, too, as he admittedly checked out of a couple of runs in the second half because the Cardinals were showing blitz. One audible took them out of a third-and-2 run, with Manning electing to take a deep sideline shot to Mario Manningham that sailed out of bounds incomplete. Whether Coughlin wants to admit it or not, this is a passing team right now. The Giants need to get back to what they do best, which is run the ball, especially now that the chill of November is upon us.

3. Do the Giants need to start Hakeem Nicks?

Ernie's Answer: Couldn't hurt. Defensive backs seem to have caught wise to Steve Smith, despite his outstanding route-running abilities. And for all of Manningham's outstanding powers of concentration on deflected balls and such, he isn't the most reliable guy out there. But Nicks is a nice target who seems to be learning and improving every game. He's still got a lot to learn, but you can't fault the productivity that includes four touchdown catches in four games. Were it not for his Johnny-On-The-Spot alertness on his 62-yard catch off a deflection, Manning would have left the Cardinals game with exactly zero touchdown passes. Not only that, but his 16 catches for 315 yards has already equaled the most catches by a Giants rookie wide receiver since Bobby Johnson in 1984 (Ed McCaffrey in 1991 and David Tyree in 2003). If the coach's adage that a player earns field time by producing, then Nicks has certainly filled his quotient. He's already a more reliable downfield threat than Domenik Hixon, whose strength lies more in the return game. And at 6-0, 201, he'll make a more adequate complement to the shifty Smith than the smaller Manningham. So, yeah, start him.

4. Should Bill Sheridan play Justin Tuck inside more?

Ernie's Answer: I may be in the minority here, but I don't think so. I like it when Mathias Kiwanuka rotates in and they put Tuck inside to give them three pass rushers up front. But stopping the run, even in a pass-first league, is huge, and Tuck does just fine with that working from the outside. He's strong enough to fend off blocks and fast enough to prevent running backs from getting to the corner. Plus, he can drop back into coverage on the zone blitz every now and then. I think the answer to the inside pass rush problems is to get Fred Robbins going. Remember, too, that we haven't seen Chris Canty. If he ever gets back from his calf injury, he's going to help on the inside with that big wingspan and speed. So better to keep Tuck on the outside on the 50-50 run/pass downs and save his sore shoulder from the wear and tear of the guard/center double-team. He's too valuable to subject to a steady beating inside.

Keep it here all day to post your thoughts and comments before and during today's game between the Baltimore Ravens at the Minnesota Vikings. It's going to be a real tough one, considering the Ravens are in the midst of a two game losing streak at 3-2, while the Vikings sit among the top few teams in the NFL at 5-0.

But that doesn't matter at all once the teams take the field. The Ravens will be by far the toughest test for this undefeated Minnesota team. While the Vikings have won every game this season, they haven't faced the hard hitting Ravens, who up until last week, were as balanced a team as there was in the league. The home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last week soured a lot of people on this team, but they have proven they can play with the tough teams based on their win at San Diego and last second losses to the New England Patriots as well as the Bengals.

(More on Ravens @ Vikings: Prediction & "Open Thread" after the 'Jump')

The Vikings also present what should be the Ravens toughest test of the season. Adrian Peterson is the best RB in the league, Brett Favre is playing more like a 20 year old than a 40 year old, the offensive line is big and nasty, and that's just their offense! Defensively, Minnesota may have the best front seven in the league, stopping the run as well as the pass. Their cornerbacks are solid, shut down their opponents' top receivers and make the big plays, leading the league in interceptions.

Since I'm such a home town fan, I see that the Ravens seem to play to their opponents' expected level of competition. This means that we play as good or as poorly as the opponent appears to be playing. Part of the reason the Ravens lost last week to he Bengals is that we fully expected the game to be an easy win but sadly found out that Cincinnati was for real. In both games at the Patriots and Chargers, we either hung tough or took the game to them, not feeling the pressure and folding when we got behind early in the game. I see the same thing happening today, as the team knows they're in for a brutal battle and have their backs against the wall.

Facing an angry Ravens team is not something most teams want to do, but knowing the Vikings, they'll be up to the task. Peterson should get his yards, but as long as the Ravens stop the long run, they should still be in the game. Forcing Favre to throw more than the game plan wants to is in the Ravens favor. While Favre has enjoyed a great season thus far, the Ravens have faced him with success in the past. If Favre has to air it out for the Vikings to win, the Ravens can pin their ears back, pressure him to return to his gunslinger mode and make the interceptions to change the game.

Offensively, I fully expect the Ravens to pound the rock more this game than they did last week, which should open up the passing game. Willis McGahee needs to be involved on a regular basis to spell Ray Rice, plus pounding LeRon McClain into the front wall of the Vikings defense should soften them up for the big play. The Vikings have been susceptible to the passing game, usually to the slot receiver and the tight ends. Expect to see a lot of throws to both Kelley Washington and Todd Heap and perhaps even a L.J. Smith and David Tyree sighting.

With that gameplan, I can see the Ravens upsetting the Vikings and getting back on the winning track. Baltimore likes to be the underdog and gets little respect from the experts. Surprisingly, four of seven writers from The Baltimore Sunpapers actually are picking the Ravens to win this game. Even more surprisingly, I agree with those that do, as I see us getting the pressure on the QB that wasn't there last week and while we've lost our last two games and left points on the field, we could have easily won those games with one more good play on offense or defense. Today we make those "one more plays," both on offense and defense, and drop Minnesota from the ranks of the unbeatens in front of their home fans to go into a well deserved Bye week at 4-2.

Ravens: 21-20

We've been having a pretty good time this week exchanging questions and good-natured barbs with the folks from Baltimore Beatdown, but I received a request this week for a Five Good Question exchange with the folks from Right Off Russell, another Baltimore-centric blog, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to branch out a bit. You can check out the questions he sent me and my responses to them right here, and what you see now are the questions I sent to the good folks at Right Off Russell and their answers. Enjoy!

1) The Ravens lost defensive coordinator Rex Ryan this past off-season, and replaced him with Greg Mattison. What has changed about the defense to this point in the season, and what have you seen that's remained the same?

If you looked at the base Ravens defense, it would be hard to tell the difference. Systematically they are the same. The biggest difference is that Mattison, unlike his predecessor, is not a believer in "exotic " blitz packages. There is none of this walking around trying fake out the offense. While the defense is struggling, I’m not sure this is to blame. Ryan’s defense has been torched over the past 2 weeks. I wonder if the league is figuring it out.

Mattison has some work to do because down linemen are not generating enough pressure up front and it’s exposing the Ravens B-level cornerbacks.

2) Minnesota has a couple of pretty good running backs on their roster, but the Ravens bring the proverbial three-headed monster to town this weekend. Detail for Viking fans that may not see the Ravens on a regular basis how the team utilizes Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, and LeRon McClain.

I think we are still trying to figure out the 3-headed monster. What we do know is that Rice is accumulating the majority of the carries. He is the quickest of the 3 and is great at the catch and run. Willis has been extremely effective in the red zone. Not exactly sure why he disappeared last week against the Bengals, but 7 TDs this season is no joke. As for McClain, he is an extremely talented back as was displayed last year. He is almost cursed in that he is also a good blocker. He will see 5 carries a game, but he is desperately needed as a lead blocker.

3) Joe Flacco is quickly becoming one of the league's better young quarterbacks. What do you feel has enabled him to make such a massive leap from 2008 to 2009?

We are definitely happy with Flacco’s emergence this year especially with all the fears of a sophomore slump. I think his success is due to a full year of learning Cam Cameron’s offense. Last season, he was only named the starter because of attrition. While he definitely earned his spot as the starter, it’s amazing how much opening the playbook has allowed him to flourish.

4) Which member of the Ravens that's a little more obscure do you think could play a major role in this Sunday's contest?

I would keep an eye on WR Kelley Washington. Washington was primarily a special teams player with the Pats last year and he tried out for the team in the spring and has yet to look back. He provides size at the receiver position that the Ravens need. He has also made some crucial catches this season. With Derrick Mason demanding most of the attention, I see Washington being able to make some big plays.

5) What is the injury status of the Ravens right now, and how will any injuries they might be working through affect their strategy against the Vikings this weekend?

LT Jared Gaither is still struggling with his neck injury. He has yet to practice since being carted off the field in Foxboro 2 weeks ago. At this point he is being listed as doubtful. The Ravens will continue to deal with the injury by moving RT Michael Oher to the left side and filling the right side with converted Guard Marshal Yanda. The Ravens lost their backup tackle to season ending surgery in the preseason. I think this injury makes their line solid as opposed to dominating.

I also think the Ravens are still recovering from the loss of LB Brendon Ayanbadejo. Brendon was a stud on special teams and he made some huge plays on certain packages on the defense. He was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week during Week 3. Now the Ravens are forced to play some 1st and 2nd year linebackers who are more prone to make mistakes. They did however just sign Super Bowl XLII hero David Tyree to help shore up their special teams.

This is by far the toughest game the Baltimore Ravens have faced so far in 2009. The undefeated Vikings sit atop the NFC North at 5-0 and while many people will say they really haven't played anyone, they have won every game on their schedule so far and you can't ask any more than that. Too bad the Ravens didn't play better at the end of the games the past two weeks as this would have been a even better matchup if we had two 5-0 teams going at it this Sunday!

Surprisingly, Minnesota is listed as a three point favorite, which is the typical home field advantage and that basically means that the oddsmakers think this is pretty much an even game. Even as a huge Ravens fan, I see the Vikings as more of a six point favorite, although I guess the guys in Vegas have seen the close games that were just seconds away from victories for us.

More on "How To Beat The Minnesota Vikings" after the 'Jump')

So how in the world does this so-called "snake-bitten" Ravens team go into a dome, in a city where they're never played before, and beat an undefeated Vikings team that has the best RB in the league and one of the best QB's ever? How about by playing up to your potential for a full sixty minutes? If the Ravens had done that the past two weeks, this would have been that great game between two undefeated teams. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

So now we have a 3-2 team on a disappointing two game losing streak hoping to go into our Bye week on a good note, but facing the very real possibility that we will end the first six games at .500 and 3-3, in 3rd place in our own division! That would be a free fall that would make for a tough Bye week prior to having another undefeated team (Denver Broncos) come into town for our seventh game.

However, we can start an upswing in both momentum and enthusiasm by pinning the first loss on Minnesota in front of their home fans. The Vikings have been susceptible to the passing game and the Ravens need to go downfield for longer passes than they did the past week. Deep throws to the wideouts can result in big gains and the quick touchdown that this team needs to win. Perhaps we may even see an appearance of new Ravens and former New York Giants Super Bowl hero David Tyree in this game. Pounding the rock on the ground to force the Vikings to concentrate on stopping that first will go a long way towards opening up the passing lanes. The Vikings have a great defensive line and their front seven is as good as any in the NFL. Therefore, in order to burst through that group, we will need to involve both Willis McGahee and LeRon McClain in the run game much more than we did last week. If we stick to that game plan, our offense should be able to move the ball. If QB Joe Flacco stays away from the Red Zone mistakes he's made the last two weeks that took points off the board that may have been enough to win those games, then our offense will be doing its part.

Defensively, we just have to be better than we were last week. I realize that until late in the game, we had only given up 10 points, but we were unable to stop an 80 yard drive with the game on the line and that just can't reoccur this week. Most people figure that if we couldn't stop Cedric Benson, then how in the world will we be able to stop Adrian Peterson? Well, this is going to have to happen to win the game and it all starts in the trenches. We need to get pressure into the backfield on the running game to slow down the quick start of AP, making him stutter step while we fill our lanes and gang tackle him. While Brett Favre was a great QB and is having a super season so far, placing the need to win the game on his shoulders is what we want to see happen. In 2005, Favre came into M&T Bank Stadium as a Green Bay Packer and once his run game was shut down, he was unable to pass the Pack to victory, as he threw two interceptions before being removed from the game in a 49-3 Ravens victory.

So our goal on defense is going to make him think he can beat our DB's and throw the ball more than the Vikings plan to. At the same time, if we do not get pressure on him, even a 40 year old guy will pick us apart. Therefore, just like most games, this one also will be determined in the trenches and while the Ravens have the personnel to win both sides of the ball, the Vikings do as well with an excellent offensive line that practices daily against one of the best defensive lines in the game. Last week the Ravens lost the battle of the trenches on both sides to the Bengals and the game as well. If we do the same thing this week, the result will be another loss. However, if we play with the emotion and without the stupid penalties, then we should be in position to win the game as the clock ticks down. All Ravens fans might be concerned that this is a very real contender for a Super Bowl title that we are facing but deep inside we know that if the Ravens play "Like a Raven" to the level of competition we know this team can rise to, then there is no reason we can't shock the NFL this Sunday and return home for a well deserved Bye at 4-2.

Nothing against Tyree personally, but the Rams need something more than this for their WRs. Of course, if he is a good special teams player, that wouldn't hurt the Rams at all either. We'll see.

Due diligence or outright concerned about roster depth, the St. Louis Rams brought in a few players to workout today.

We mentioned the news this morning that former Steelers RB Gary Russell was at Rams Park today. Joining him were RBs DeShaun Foster and Carey Davis, another former Steeler, along with LBs Tank Daniels and David Herron.

I doubt that's the last players that the Devaney and Co. visit with as they tweak their roster prior to the Seattle game. These workouts will also be handy down the road in case they need to quickly plug a gap due to injury. On top of that, they've got to be concerned about RB depth. Gado had a nice preseason, but he's dealing with what could be a painful injury. Another blow to those ribs and he could be on the bench. Behind Gado is Darby, who failed in the preseason to build on the promise he showed last season. I don't mean to be a hater about Gado either, but I wonder if there's not a dropoff between what he's capable of doing in the preseason versus live rounds.

The Rams have six LBs on the active roster and two on the practice squad (K.C. Asiodu and Dominic Douglas). They're already without Larry Grant, who looks like a nice option as a rusher at SLB, for this week and probably next.

The biggest, most obvious question for a Rams roster tweak is adding another WR. Right now, the Rams have just four receivers on the active roster and one (Sean Walker) on the practice squad. The report from the PD (linked above) says Devaney and the Rams are interested in former Eagles WR Greg Lewis, a system, route runner type with some yards-after-catch ability.

Former Giants WR David Tyree's agent said recently that the Rams were among a small group of teams with some interest. (I think I'll pass).
