Thursday night game means that to comply with the leagues requirement of 3 injury reports teams need to give a "Practice Estimation" on Monday, reporting which players they'd expect to hold out of practice if they were conducting a practice today. As you'd expect for the day after a game, the lists are long. Really it's more telling to look at who isn't listed. In the Colts case that list is actually shorter and we'll start with that.

Players Not Listed (count on them playing)

Curtis Painter, Mike Hart, Jacob Tamme, Gijon Robinson, Dallas Clark, Austin Collie, Hank Baskett, Micheal Toudoze, Mike Pollak, Jeff Saturday, Ryan Lilja, Antonio Johnson, Fili Moala, Erwin Baldwin, Philip Wheeler, Freddy Keiaho, Ramon Humber, Cody Glenn, T.J.
In general the news is good, but still not very comforting.

Returning to Practice: Antoine Bethea, Reggie Wayne, Ramon Humber, Gijon Robinson (limited)

It looks like the Colts have changed the way they use the report and are now listing some players who have injuries, but did not miss any practice time. This, along with a large number of players missing time makes for the longest Colts injury report I've ever seen. Unfortunately the list is not just long but star studded.

Did Not Participate: Antoine Bethea (foot), Keyunta Dawson (knee), Aaron Francisco (Ankle), Dwight Freeney (Abdomen), Anthony Gonzalez (knee), Kelvin Hayden (knee), Ramon Humber (calf), Gijon Robinson (concussion), Jim Sorgi (right shoulder), Adam Vinatieri (right knee), Reggie Wayne (foot)

<![endif]-->At the end of the quarter, Nick Reed substituted for Patrick Kerney. I didn't initially notice it was Reed, but caught on in time to scribble this note "Reed looks slow as shit." He was attempting backside pursuit. Kerney is faster than his young disciple. That doesn't bode well for Reed, but it's also not a backhanded compliment of Kerney. Kerney still has some quicks. His point about regaining his burst off the edge to regain his pass rush prowess is instructive. Kerney can still jump around an offensive tackle, it's everything else that is starting to worry me.

1. 1-10-IND 20 (11:47) 18-P.Manning pass short left to 29-J.Addai to IND 37 for 17 yards (51-L.Tatupu, 27-J.Babineaux).

Kerney's pressure is slow developing because of confusion instead of inability. The Colts line swelled and flexed, consuming the Seahawks other three linemen and not presenting Kerney an avenue of attack until the play had developed. That's when Kerney cut in and pressured Manning and that's when Aaron Curry did something stupid. He dropped cover on Joseph Addai and rushed Manning. Manning lobbed it to Addai and Addai ran for 17.

Kerney displayed his quickness on the next snap, getting backside pursuit and contributing to a Kelly Jennings run stuff. Then started a series of plays that alarmed me. The next two plays, Kerney got around end only to be washed out or knocked down turning the corner.

A quick aside. I never bought into Tony Ugoh. He always looked bad to me. I don't mention this because a bloggers' work is his credibility, though that factors, I mention this to gauge the quality of Kerney's matchup. Indianapolis replaced Ugoh with Charles Johnson. Johnson is a different profile of Ray Willis. The Colts selected him late and have practiced him into an NFL regular. But I see no proof he is good. Manning makes everyone look good, so Johnson isn't dissimilar to Pierre Garcon in my mind. If Marcus Trufant was active, Seattle would need Trufant to shut down Garcon whenever the two were matched. Seattle wasn't going to stop Manning from making his teammates look good, but on certain matchups, Seattle's best had to win-win-win for Seattle to survive.

So Kerney shouldn't have battled Johnson to a draw. He shouldn't have created occasional edge rush that was quickly nullified by a step into the pocket and a well-timed shove by Johnson. But that's exactly what happened here

2-7-IND 40 (10:32) (Shotgun) 18-P.Manning pass short left to 29-J.Addai to IND 45 for 5 yards (51-L.Tatupu)

and here

3-2-IND 45 (9:52) (Shotgun) 18-P.Manning pass short left to 44-D.Clark to SEA 45 for 10 yards (31-K.Lucas, 92-B.Mebane)

--the very next play. A play later, Gijon Robinson sealed him off and Addai ran for five. Then he was washed out again, and sealed twice more on the final three plays of the quarter. Three runs, all successful, the final to score the touchdown.

Kerney was right. He got his speed back. But Kerney is wrong. An end needs more than quickness to be good. He needs strength to separate and strong arms to anchor on an inside move. He needs a bull rush, even Freeney has one, and needs and edge rush that doesn't redirect five yards behind the quarterback. If he's going to get sealed out by tight ends, half backs and full backs, he better be a terror rushing the passer, and Kerney isn't anymore. For one quarter he wasn't, anyway.

[From BBS- I'm back, and I will be in the chat room tonight for the Monday night game. In the meantime, enjoy shake n bake's preview.]

Only hours until gameday now and some news is trickling in.

From Phil B, Jamey Richard did not make the trip, so you can mark him down as one of the inactives along with Sanders, Santi and Gonzo. Throw in Painter as the 3rd QB and the Colts are sitting 3 healthy players at most (and with Powers, Gijon and Charlie Johnson listed as questionable they might be sitting none). Phil B also passes along that Pierre Garcon will be making his first NFL start tonight and just an hour south of his hometown, West Palm Beach.

On to the match-up. Two injury situations are key to how the game plays out. Gijon Robinson and Jerraud Powers are questionable after practicing Thursday and Friday, but missing the week's final practice on Saturday. With Tom Santi ruled out, Gijon Robinson's health will be a major factor in determining the usage of Clark, Tamme, Addai and Don Brown. Without Gijon one or more of the 4 RB/TEs will likely be forced into a primarily blocking role to help Charlie Johnson and Ryan Diem handle pass rushers Joey Porter and Jason Taylor. If Gijon is able to go it opens up the RB and other TE on the field to attack the Fins LBs and Safeties, a potentially major weakness in their defense. The Phins have struggled covering TEs from preseason through week 1 this year, so an unleashed Clark and/or Tamme would be major assets for the Colts O.

Powers puts the defense in a similar situation. He's replaceable, but not having him limits what the D can do. The expert opinion is split on how Powers would be replaced, Phil B guessing that Tim Jennings would get the start, while Oesher thinks that Marlin Jackson would take the start on the outside and slide to the slot when Tim Jennings came in the in nickel, like the secondary did before Jackson and Hayden's injuries. Either way downgrades the outside coverage in blitz situations. Powers was drafted and won the week 1 start thanks to his ability to play both man and zone coverage. Jackson is likely not back to 100% on his rebuilt knee and both Jackson and Jennings had been immersed in the almost exclusively zone Colts D for several years.

Pass Pressure will be the key for both sides. Between the two teams players accounting for nearly 400* career sacks will take the field tonight. If one team is able to get pressure while the other isn't it's likely to be a lopsided game very quickly.

With the return of Big Ed, Mookie and Muir integrated into the system and considerably threat of the deep ball than usual the Colts have the set up to be able to stop, rather than just contain a competent running game tonight. Good tackling will be a necessity against a team that won't get impatient and lob ill advised deep shots.

Both Os have a significant wild card going for them. With the Dolphins it's their various iterations of the Wildcat offense. The Colts repeatedly shut down a unbalanced line, power running attack from the Ravens last year, despite being severely undersized, but the Dolphins Wildcat offers more challenges, especially with a pass/run threat like Pat White able to take the snaps. On the Colts side it's not a unusual formation that presents challenges to the D, it's the ability to run a vast array of usual formations with the exact same players. The Colts can run everything from 2 TE-Singleback, to 5 Wide to a Splitback formation from the same personnel package (Wayne, Garcon, Clark, Tamme, Addai). The Colts can give the D vastly different looks and strengths, while the hurry up and lack of substitution prevents the D from making personnel adjustments.

The Colts need to give Peyton time to throw, keep the Dolphins from eating up the clock with the run game on dink/dunk passing and not allow any big plays on blown tackling or wildcat confusion. If the Colts can pull it off they'll sit a game up in the division and over the rival Pats, Chargers and Steelers, with a two game lead over division foes Jacksonville and Tennessee.

Go Colts!

*391 career sacks, including 6 players with over 20 career sacks: Jason Taylor (121.5), Joey Porter (83), Dwight Freeney (71.5), Robert Mathis (53.5), Raheem Brock (25), Jason Ferguson (22.5).

Finally! The long preseason is over. Very soon we will see who gets cut and who makes the roster. If anyone watched the embarrassment of this game, they know how hard it is to try and find something good from this game. Obviously it needs to be said that almost all of the players that played today are in no way expected to contribute this season, but it was still ugly. It gave us a grim glimpse of life without Manning (and Addai, Brown, Wayne, Saturday, Freeney, Mathis, etc...). Now we know how Lions fans feel in the regular season. Here is a position-by-position rundown of today's "game".

QBs

~I thought both of them played well. Sorgi played the first half and Painter played the second. Both showed good accuracy and didn't make any big mistakes passing. A Sorgi interception got called back but that was mostly Tamme's fault for dropping the pass. Sorgi did lose a fumble. This game didn't show us anything knew. Sorgi is the second best QB on the roster and Painter is the future Sorgi.

RBs

~Simpson and Ball both played well to be honest for their situations. The guards didn't play very well today, but Ball was able to get 3.4 yards per carry (which would have been average on the team last year) and Simpson had 16 yards on 4 carries. Walter Mendenhall had one big run but did nothing to show he deserves to be close to a roster spot. This will be one of the most highly anticipated cuts. Will Hart or Ball make it? Will both of them be on the 53 man roster? I would guess when cut day comes that will be headline here at Stampede Blue.

WRs/TEs

~Taj Smith was pretty awesome today. His touchdown catch was a thing of beauty when he got the ball in tight coverage. He had 5 catches for 59 yards and was targeted an amazing 11 times. Jacob Tamme also got a lot of looks and did decent. His dropped pass which resulted in an interception was ugly though. John Matthews still sucks.

OL

~Kyle DeVan and Tony Ugoh were good. Jaimie Thomas and Jamey Richard were bad. Ugoh was playing great at left tackle and had to compensate for the surprisingly awful performance by Richard. Richard looked like he didn't care and was very slow. Another reason why preseason is too damn long. DeVan should have clinched a roster spot tonight but Steve Justice could somehow keep a roster spot.

DL

~The way they handle the D-line shows that the Colts couldn't care less about the preseason. Honestly, the only way they could show how little they cared to an even further extent would be to not show up at all. They play 4 DTs and no defensive ends because the defensive end position is locked up. Adrian Grady proved to be a complete monster and I don't think he will get cut. I have a gut feeling that Daniel Muir could be on his way out. It depends on how the team would feel about cutting someone who was looking like he could be starting in Week One.

LB

~This is the most confusing unit on the team. One week Mike Tauiliili looks like a star and the next he is a non-factor. Jordan Senn didn't play all that well tonight and Freddy Keiaho showed his uselessness with missing easy tackles. I think that Ramon Humber has to make the roster. I mean, there is no way they can keep someone like Keiaho over him, can they?

DB

~For the corners, Jacob Lacey played well except on the first drive. He is practice squad bound, but he looks like a future Colt. He's great in man coverage.

~Jamie Silva played great. He led the team in tackles and had a sack. He was a stud today and I think he locked up a roster spot.

Special Teams

~Adam Vinatieri missed a field goal and Pat McAfee had a punt blocked and may or may not have been injured. Someone would need to clarify that for me. From a kicking standpoint, it was an ugly game.

~Jamie Silva is not a punt returner unless 5 yards a return sounds acceptable to you. Simpson wasn't as bad as usual at returning kicks, but he isn't making the roster because of it. That's for sure.

Roster prediction after the jump.

QB
Peyton Manning
Jim Sorgi
Curtis Painter

I like this roster and I really don't have very many problems with it. Usually I will be apprehensive about publishing a roster prediction because I just don't agree with all of it, but I like this one. Muir being booted is obviously the most controversial along with Jennings leaving, but if this team wants the 53 best players, this is probably the way to go.

Before we get to the notes about the morning practice, we'll recap a few roster moves that happened today:

OG Brandon Barnes, who was signed to a two-year deal this off-season, was cut.

Colts used the open roster spot to sign DT John Gill, 6'3, 302 pounds. Gill is an undrafted rookie out of Northwestern. Gill was recently cut by the Detroit Lions.

DT Raheem Brock is out for 3 weeks with a fractured hand. He is having surgery.

The Gill signing is to have a warm body in camp while Brock recovers. Cutting Barnes seems to indicate that the Colts are confident in Ryan Lilja's health. Signing Barnes this past off-season made little sense if Lilja was healthy, but since there were all kinds of questions about Lilja's surgically repaired knee the Colts needed someone if Lilja were done. So, while I wish Barnes all the best, his releasing might be a good sign. We shall see.

John Oehser at IFR provided some great notes today from the morning practice. Several Colts players returned to practice after sitting out some last week, or not playing in the Friday pre-season opener against the Vikings. Mike Hart, Anthony Gonzalez, Charlie Johnson, Sam Giguere, Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, Kelvin Hayden, Melvin Bullitt, Marlin Jackson, and Antonio Johnson all returned for the morning practice. Antoine Bethea returned for the afternoon one.

Again, as I said this past weekend, the Colts don't give a stinking crap about pre-season. It is my suspicion that all of these guys could have played. Why didn't they? Because the Colts don't give a crap. They know what each and every one of those guys can do.

Check after the jump for camp notes from 8/17/09.

In 7 on 7 drills, rookie CB Jerraud Powers intercepted a deflected ball intended for TE Jamie Petrowski. Powers strolled down the sideline for a TD.

Charlie Johnson is still the starting LT... for now. If Ugoh continues proving the obvious (that he is leaps and bounds more superior at LT than Charlie), then the coaches will continue to look like boobs for making this dumb and obnoxiously silly change.

Morning practice was in full pads.

Austin Collie continues to work solely in the slot. Pierre Garcon is working as an outside receiver.

Collie had a TD pass this morning in practice, as did Garcon in 7 on 7 drills.

Clint Session, looking like Kimbo Slice, is fully entrenched at WILL backer.

Gijon Robinson got hit hard in the morning practice. He did not return for the afternoon one. Don't know yet who hit him.

We'll have an article up tomorrow discussing Peter King's very interesting conversation with Peyton Manning while at training camp, but until then, check out this very tastey quote straight from Big P himself:

I'm gonna kind of whisper this because I don't like rookies to read anything I say. But I think [third-round BYU receiver] Austin Collie's got a chance. He can run. He can really run. He is working the slot only. We haven't had anyone since Brandon Stokley to work the slot only. That's all he practiced. He doesn't have to worry about anything but the slot.

"The other young guy, Pierre Garcon, can run, too. He's an outside receiver only. What we're doing a better job of with the young guys is we're saying, 'This is your position. You don't have to learn everything.' Garcon is like Marvin; after he takes five steps, he's so fast, you'd better let it go.

Very, VERY high praise for two young men from a guy who rarely, if ever, praises young, unproven players. Let's just lock it in stone now, because when Big P talks, it's pretty much law around Colts Land: Collie is the slot receiver; Garcon is Reggie Wayne's back-up.
