So Far So Good for Chiefs New Receiver Bobby Wade

If you watched the Kansas City Chiefs game this afternoon, then you probably noticed No. 80 out on the field early and often. No, no that wasn't Jeff Webb, who has since been released.

It was new receiver Bobby Wade. Cut by the Minnesota Vikings last weekend, signed by the Chiefs on Monday and six catches for 72 yards on Sunday.

Not bad, right?

In the Chiefs 13-10 loss to the Oakland Radiers, Matt Cassel looked at Wade early and often. 29 of Cassel's first 30 passing yards went to him.

This is a nice stat - especially after a few plays with Mark Bradley last week - Wade caught four first downs and got 8 on a 3rd and 9 on another play.

3rd and 4: 16 yard reception
1st and 10: 5 yard reception
3rd and 9: 8 yard reception
2nd and 9: 12 yard reception
1st and 10: 20 yard reception
1st and 10: 11 yard reception

Wade was targeted eight times.

"Bobby did a great job today," Cassel said. "He stepped up; he worked hard all week. He came in and really made a huge impact today. I was happy to see him step up. It was just one of those days that he was getting the ball a lot and he got open and we gave him the ball."

He also returned six punts for a run-of-the-mill 9.0 yards per return.

First week is in the books for Wade and the results are positive.

Who Wants to be a Chiefs WR? Anyone? Anyone?

With the addition of Bobby Wade reportedly happening today, I thought it would be a good time to do a quick review of how we ended up with the receivers that we did. Obviously, this position has been a revolving door the last nine months with the exception of Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradley, the only two leftovers from the '08 squad.

There have been players entering their second season that were released (Franklin), veterans that were signed (Toomer) and released and even a few veterans that made it on the 53 man roster (Engram).

All in all, there have been 14 players that have been seen on the Chiefs roster at one point since Scott Pioli's January hiring.

Four were cut from last year, a few more came off the street and a bunch in between.

Roster transactions! Yes!

The Kansas City Chiefs have fourteen total roster transactions since the general start of training camp in the NFL, the last day in July. That number includes trading, cutting and waiving players and does not include draft pick signings.

An excellent article by Yahoo Sports Charles Robinson brought this stat to my attention in his article yesterday.

Enter Haley and general manager Scott Pioli, two men who have seemingly gone to work on the franchise’s psyche with a blowtorch and a chainsaw. With that in mind, you need only look at the Chiefs for one afternoon to realize that the blood-letting has just begun. And by the time it’s over, there may not be a player on the roster who hasn’t had the buttons inside his head re-programmed – if he can survive long enough.

Robinson goes on:

That latter point is significant. Since the start of training camp on July 31, the Chiefs have made more roster moves than any other team – signing, cutting or trading 14 players. And that’s a tally that doesn’t include the inking of draft picks. While at their training site in River Falls, Wis., the Chiefs released five players. The previous regime had cut three players while in River Falls … in three years.

It really is a startling difference once you sit down and think about it. Fourteen players over just three in three years by the previous staff? Talk about contrasting styles.

We know that the news can come at quite a rapid pace around here sometimes so I've summed up all of those fourteen roster transactions after the jump. By next Tuesday, the team will have to trim down to 75 players so there will be more cutting and signing coming soon.

July 28th - K Connor Barth waived

And the Ryan Succop era (however long it may last) began with the release of Barth.

August 3rd - Claimed LB Vince Redd off of waivers

A 6'6", 260 pound outside linebacker, Redd saw limited action in five games with the Patriots last season. He was signed as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2008 and appeared in five of the team's final six games accumulating two tackles.

Redd was waived on August 24th after being suspended for four games by the NFL. Ephedra containing Sudafed is reportedly to blame.

August 4th - Chiefs sign veteran WR Amani Toomer

However you look at it, it's fairly clear to me that the Chiefs would point to option one. After listening to fomer Giants GM Ernie Accorsi on 610 Sports, I'm definitely on board with this signing. He's in the same veteran mold as Mike Vrabel and Zach Thomas and embodies the high character players the Chiefs have targeted.

TE Tony Curtis was released to make room for Toomer on the roster.

August 5th - QB Ingle Martin cut

My initial speculation on the waiving of Ingle Martin was that it was to make room on the roster for DE Tyson Jackson. Not so as you'll find out next.

August 5th - Chiefs sign former Patriot QB Matt Gutierrez

Yep, another New England QB. Guttierrez is looking to beat out Tyler Thigpen for the third string spot and so far, he's doing just that.

August 13th - Chiefs swap snappers

The Chiefs released long snapper Tanner Purdum in exchange for now second time Chief Thomas Gafford.

August 17th - Chiefs sign WR Ashley Lelie; Release WR Jeff Webb

Former Bronco and journeyman Lelie took three year Chief Jeff Webb's spot on the team and so far in limited action has done more than I ever remember Webb doing. We'll see if Lelie makes the final 53.

August 24th - Chiefs trade for G Andy Alleman

This is the second time since Pioli's hiring on January 13th that he has made a trade with his father-in-law, Bill Parcells. The Chiefs traded up to acquire TE Jake O'Connell on the second day of the draft.

August 24th - G/T Ikechuku Ndukwe also included in the trade

And the Chiefs weren't done on the 24th, adding another guard from the Dolphins in the trade and releasing G Brian De La Puente to make room on the roster.

The Ashley Lelie era begins in Kansas City as Jeff Webb's time with the Chiefs comes to an end.

The Chiefs signed WR Lelie and released WR Webb. Josh Looney first reported the move at the Mothership. Here is the official release on the acquisition of Lelie.

Lelie was in for a workout after last Thursday's afternoon practice. Chris Hamblin of 610 Sports first reported the workout.

Lelie has been underwhelming* throughout the majority of his career save a 1,084 yard season in 2004, three years after being drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos.

*Underwhelming may not be the best word. He had a solid season in year three with Denver then a contract dispute shipped him off to Atlanta following year four so he wasn't necessarily given a full opportunity to grow with the Broncos. This is coming from an outsiders' perspective. Insiders, fill us in in the comments.

In the last three years, he's had stops in Atlanta, San Francisco and Oakland. A skeptic would point out that all of those teams were in desperate need of wide receivers at the time and Lelie didn't last more than a season, which doesn't bode well for his chances in Kansas City. A more optimistic outlook of Lelie's last three years would point out that the quarterbacks in those three stops were sub-par, at best.

Jeff Webb was a sixth round pick Herm Edwards' first year with the Chiefs. Both he and Edwards are San Diego State alums which led some to believe that was a reason Webb stuck around. Being a late round pick, the expectations weren't high from the get-go. His best season came in year two when he caught 28 balls for 313 yards.

Practice number eight is pretty much in the books for the Kansas City Chiefs. It's scheduled to end at 6:30 today. The team had two practices today, an AM and a PM session. Check out the AM notes here.

Bob Gretz is doing his thing at CBS Sports and we've gathered some more info for you from the usual suspects.

The only updates really missing are the UW-RF's, which we'll have in this post as soon as they're live.

Quarterback Brodie Croyle completed a pass to wide receiver Jeff Webb. Webb made his first move after the reception to his right (east). Head Coach Todd Haley wasn’t impressed with the four-year veteran’s move. "Get up the field, Webb. You don’t run East or West ever," he shouted. (UW-RF)

Defense

At the end of afternoon practice, the Chiefs' No. 1 offense had three plays to score from the 10-yard line. On the second play, CB Brandon Flowers intercepted a pass by QB Matt Cassel in the end zone. (Gretz at CBS)
Cornerback DaJuan Morgan and linebackers Mike Vrabel, Demorrio Williams and Weston Dacus did not participate in this afternoon’s practice. Instead, the group spent time on field 3, working out. (UW-RF)
Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie had a new phrase for the defensive linemen at practice today. Krumrie continually yelled, "Don’t be that guy!" when the men were running drills. He meant that the players shouldn’t be the guy to mess up first. (UW-RF)
While running the 11-on-11 situation drill, Head Coach Todd Haley grew frustrated with the overall performance of the defense. "Defense, get your (crap) together," he shouted. (UW-RF)
Cornerback Brandon Flowers picked off quarterback Matt Cassel’s pass with some help from the linebackers, showing pressure. After Flowers’ interception, the entire defensive squad got hyped up. Prior to the pick, the offense had been looking better than the defense. (UW-RF)

Special teams

In a live punt drill, Chiefs rookie WR Quinten Lawrence continued to have problems catching the ball. He fumbled two, including one recovered by the punt team. (Gretz at CBS)
The Chiefs are working OLB Andy Studebaker as a long snapper. The only snapper on the roster is rookie Tanner Purdum. (Gretz at CBS)
The team has not held an exclusive "special teams practice," yet the coaching staff is finding ways to focus on the teams game multiple times each practice. The periods are somewhat long, about 10 minutes, and quality max-effort reps are taken. The focus this afternoon is punt pro. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)

Signing Amani Toomer is a 'Low-Risk' Move for the Chiefs

Despite the absence of a press release from the Kansas City Chiefs, Amani Toomer is in River Falls and participating in camp with the team.

There are a couple of ways to take this signing.

Either Toomer represents an upgrade over a handful of the Chiefs current crop of receivers namely Jeff Webb, Rodney Wright and a few of the other rookies and can help mold the younger guys into better players....

...Or he's over-the-hill and is only taking snaps from the younger guys.

However you look at it, it's fairly clear to me that the Chiefs would point to option one. After listening to fomer Giants GM Ernie Accorsi on 610 Sports this afternoon, I'm definitely on board with this signing. He's in the same veteran mold as Mike Vrabel and Zach Thomas and embodies the high character players the Chiefs have targeted.

Accorsi was the Giants assistant GM in 1996 when they drafted Toomer and, while that was 14 years ago, still believes he can offer the Chiefs some help on and off the field. The hosts of the show started the segment characterizing Toomer as a possession receiver like Dwayne Bowe and Bobby Engram but Accorsi was quick to point out that Toomer caught his fair share of deep balls in New York.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star weighed in on the signing in his latest video blog. He appears to like the signing and describes it as a "low-risk" move keeping in mind the Chiefs can cut him prior to the season without any financial repercussions.

The signing of Amani Toomer of says a lot about what the Chiefs feel about their wide receivers right now. Todd Haley has been all over the receivers during camp for some dropped passes. And clearly the Chiefs aren't happy with the candidates they have to be their #2 receiver next to Dwayne Bowe.

We're talking about a group that includes Devard Darling and Mark Bradley. Bobby Engram fits into the picture probably as a slot receiver instead of a starting receiver that's going to play every down.

The signing of Toomer is a low risk signing for the Chiefs. If he works out, great. If he's anything close to the player he was for so many years with the Giants then it's a great signing for the Chiefs.

But he's 34 and if he's lost his skills the Chiefs can cut him without any financial loss but they've missed an opportunity to get a #2 receiver that they so badly need.

Three of the Chiefs Unrestricted Free Agents Still Waiting for an NFL Team to Call

The Kansas City Chiefs entered free agency with nine players hitting the market, three restricted free agents and six unrestricted. For the difference between those two terms, check out this great read.

The restricted free agents were WR Jeff Webb, C Rudy Niswanger and S Jarrad Page. All three of those players signed their tenders over the last few months. Webb signed his tender back on April 20. Niswanger signed his just a few days later and Jarrad Page just signed his tender less than a week ago. All three of these players are assured of being Chiefs in 2009. Or at least making it to training camp to compete.

That leaves us with the six unrestricted free agents and only three of them have gotten new deals. None of our free agents were snatched up right away.

What's going on with the rest of these guys?

Oliver Celestin, who was signed by the Chiefs last November, is trying out for the United Football League this weekend. Celestin spent most of his time playing on special teams and I don't believe he made it into a game at the safety position.

Interestingly enough, former Chiefs QB Quinn Gray is also trying out for the UFL in Orlando. After QB Matt Cassel was signed, the Chiefs cut Gray back in mid-March.

Jason Babin was signed by the Chiefs just after Celestin was in November 2008. The only hint of news about Babin was that he visited with the Bills shortly after becoming an UFA. Apparentely, a pregame ritual of eating an entire bucket of fried chicken (bones and everything) doesn't translate to on the field success. Babin was not signed by the Bills and remains a free agent today.

Finally, we have Rocky Boiman. He became a Chief back in October 2008 and was cut in late March. I can't find any updates on what's been going on with him. There appears to be no interest in Rocky Boiman around the NFL.

Don't expect any of these guys to make a big name for themselves in 2009. Like with the Chiefs, they are role/reserve/special teams players at best. For a list of all of the NFL's remaining UFAs, check out this link.

The Value of Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles

Go ahead and roll the dice on what we end up doing with Larry Johnson. Cut him. Trade him. Keep him. On his behalf, he's playing the game correctly - saying and doing all the right things to keep his spot, his contract and his good standing after a career as marked by off-the-field incidents as on-field talents. And while that's a shame, that's another post entirely.

That's because we're talking about Jamaal Charles here. Of course, what happens with LJ directly affects what I'm writing about now, so if Scott Pioli stops holding his cards so close to his vest and ends up cutting him soon, just negate everything I'm about to write (and hopefully you're about to read).

Assuming the Chiefs keep Larry Johnson as our primary running back, what you find is that there are a lack of targets for our beloved helmsman, Todd Haley. While I believe it's the QB that makes the WR and not vice versa, you can't deny that Haley's offense works best when the guys running along the sidelines (or cutting across the field) run crisp routes, outmaneuver the opponent and can haul it in. Thus looking around the Chiefs locker room (virtually of course), you find a lead receiver more Braylon than Larry in Dwayne Bowe and a lot of role players. That's it. That's all. And that's frustrating.

Now, if we still had Tony Gonzalez, then there would be hope, but even that outlet was taken away before newly christened QB Matt Cassel could enjoy his Chiefs colors properly. Instead we move more toward a balanced/blocking TE in Brad Cottam, negating that as a receiving outlet (at least primary) for this pass-heavy attack. While I'm sure we will make adjustments and we can't expect to see The Greatest Show on Turf around here anytime soon, it's still expected that Haley will be throwing the ball quite a bit and that someone is going to catch those passes.

I'm not buying the hype or limited evidence on any of the guys we have in house. Mark Bradley is not that inspiring. Devard is not a Darling and Jeff Webb is as boring as his name. I loved the Bobby Engram pick-up but not for his ability to be some Boldin/Fitzgerald clone (rather a Steve Breaston or Bryant Johnson clone). So no other WR, no TE and no primary RB, since Larry is hardly a Marshall Faulk redux.

Thus, unless Pioli makes some unexpected trade for Braylon Edwards or talks Andre Rison out of retirement, we might find the answer in-house. Jamaal Charles is a stud. And that's not just found in his ability to run. Last year, in a limited role, the Chiefs took advantage of Charles' ability to catch the ball out of the backfield with 27 receptions. In addition, not only does it make sense for those numbers to climb, but perhaps to use Charles in some sort of motion or even out of the slot. Let me explain.

Charles isn't a between the tackles runner, nor does he move the chains well. Instead, it's his blazing speed and open field ability that sets him apart. Check out this report from KFFL before last year's draft:

His crisp cuts, as well as lateral explosiveness, make him very elusive in the open field, and he has the true second gear to run past defensive backs once he gets into the secondary. No one was surprised when Charles put up a scorching 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, because he made a living ripping off long runs at Texas. He's a big play waiting to happen, a true burner that has the potential to take it the distance every time he touches the ball.

In addition, they note his route-running ability and decent hands, which we saw close-up in his first year with the Chiefs. A fast receiving talent like this might give Todd Haley the surprise element he needs and a chance to get flexible and creative with his backfield. A two-back set with Larry Johnson would keep defenses guessing at all times and Charles might prove himself a star, which Haley's scheme has proven itself able to do.

Of course, there's no guarantee and a trade or release of LJ changes a lot of this. But I'm hoping our receiving talent comes from within and that we can properly utilize the talents of Jamaal Charles.

Revisiting the Kansas City Chiefs 2006 Draft

Back in February of last year, over the course of about ten days, I took a look back at the Kansas City Chiefs drafts from 2000 to 2005. I only went to 2005 because I wanted to be fair and stick with that maxim, you can only begin to judge a draft class three years after the fact.

And since we're now three years from the 2006 NFL draft and still in that draft mode (Sort of), let's take a look at it, shall we?

Remember, we're doing this exercise with hindsight in mind. We're not trying to give out grades based on our knowledge at the time.

Round 1, #20 DE Tamba Hali

Considered a reach at the time, Tamba Hali has hardly lived up to first round expectations. Even though his tackles have remained steady for the three years he's been in the NFL, Hali's sack numbers have dropped significantly since Jared Allen left for Minnesota.

Right now, Hali has even been lining up at linebacker in the Chiefs' mini-camps. His future as a defensive end is iffy at best. He loses points for not living up to expectations and being unable to perform without a superstar lining up opposite him.

Grade: D+

Could have had instead: RB Laurence Maroney, C Nick Mangold, RB Joseph Addai

Round 2, #54 S Bernard Pollard

I think Bernard Pollard gets a bad rap according to many Chiefs fans so I'm going to stick up for him now. I think he's played pretty well. Him and Jarrad Page have held down the safety position for three years running and don't really show any sign of letting up. Pollard has nearly 200 tackles in the last two years. His role will undoubtedly change as the Chiefs move to a combination of the 3-4 and the 4-3 defense but he's been a good pick so far.

Grade: B

Could have had instead: KR Devin Hester, RB Maurice Jones-Drew

Round 3, #85 QB Brodie Croyle

Croyle couldn't stay healthy even in high school and for some reason Herm Edwards and the Chiefs thought this guy was our quarterback of the future. I'll admit it - I was a Croyle supporter. Not a fan per se but I said let the man have his chance to see what he can do.

Perpetually injured, Croyle lived up to pretty much what most Chiefs fan said he would live up to - nothing. I give out tough grades for guys who aren't able to shake poor reputations about their play.

Grade:C-

Could have had instead: Nobody of note

Round 5, #154 CB Marcus Maxey

Marcus Maxey stuck around for a year in KC before getting cut. Pretty much an NFL bust however you want to define it. He came in with knowledge of the Chiefs' cover 2 scheme and couldn't hack it at all.

It's tough to give out too harsh a grade on Maxey because he was a fifth round pick but still...the guy has played in one career NFL game.

Round 6, #186 OT Tre Stallings

Now we're getting deeper and deeper into the stages of the NFL draft where most players don't work out. Stallings has played in one career game and bounced around from a few practice squads, including the Chiefs' roster twice.

He gets a little credit for making it back on the roster after being cut and he gets a little help from coming from such a low draft position.

Grade: C-

Round 6, #190 WR Jeff Webb

I know everyone dislikes Jeff Webb for being pretty much a nobody but that's what happens to sixth round picks about 90% of the time, no?

Webb is at least still on the roster after three seasons and he's survived the initial Pioli purge. He's shown the occassional flash of talent but then he'll disappear for seasons at a time.

He gets a little grade bump for being drafted so low.

Grade: B

Round 7, #228 S Jarrad Page

A partial then full two-year starter in the seventh round? 'Nuff said.

Grade: A+

Overall Grade

This 2006 draft looks pretty dismal in hindsight. Hali looks to be headed nowhere beyond a weak side defensive end/linebacker. Brodie Croyle has dropped to #3 on the depth chart.

But...the Chiefs do have two solid starters in Page and Pollard (Possibly Hali) coming out of this draft. With the way the Chiefs have drafted in the last decade, that's sadly an accomplishment to applaud.

Grade: C (I know, does it get more generic than a C grade?)
