Chiefs Coach Comments on Passing of Chris Henry

The NFL is a fraternity of sorts so I imagine the Kansas City Chiefs are saddened by the news of Bengals WR Chris Henry's passing this morning.

Head coach Todd Haley met with the media this afternoon and addressed Henry's passing:

"I want to personally say that my prayers go out to his family. It’s just an awful, awful thing and we are all so lucky - the people that are in this business. It can be taken away so fast. How important it is to cherish every day and do everything you can to be the best you can be. When you see something like that it’s an awful, awful thing."

As you know, Haley was a wide receivers coach so I'm sure he was aware of Henry's ability as he came out of West Virginia and during his time with the Bengals.

A little love to "Hockey Bob" Lamey

We take a much needed break from the Chris Henry tragedy to celebrate someone that has been a welcome source of joy for many Colts fans: Team radio announcer Bob Lamey.

About a year-and-a-half ago, Bob was inducted in the Indiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame. We did a little article on the event, and the article sort of gave Colts fans here a chance to appreciate Bob, who got his start in Indiana sports broadcasting by calling games for the old Indiana Racers hockey team back in the day (thus, his nickname "Hockey Bob").

Earlier today, the Indy Star published a very nice article on Hockey Bob, providing insight into his prolific broadcasting career and his love for the team he currently works for. Just like Bob himself, the article is straight forward and honest:

Bob Lamey is like the sports fan who calls a talk radio show to vent about his beloved team, which explains why he relates so well as the "Voice of the Indianapolis Colts."
Lamey is as passionate as the people he speaks to during radio broadcasts, soaring when the Colts win and emotionally drained when they lose. He knows he's prone to overreaction but makes no apologies about being wholly invested not only in his profession but in the teams he follows.

"Yes," he said flatly, "I'm a homer."

Oakland Raider News: Today Will Be A Day Of Mourning For Chris Henry:

I will not report on anything today. After seeing the photo of Chris Henry with his children, I just can't write about anything that is going on in Raider Land.

Football seems like just a kid's game played by grown men today. I don't know what it is about Chris Henry passing away that got to me this morning. He isn't a Raider. I don't know him. I've never even met him. But, I CAN personally relate to him.

But, what he is to me is someone who overcame long odds and his own problems to right his ship and become a success. I can personally ralte to this in my own life.

Also, like me, he was a father of three children. One of my deepest fears is dying young and not being able to raise my young daughters, let alone them not knwoing me, or be there for my teenage son when life bites him in the backside.

This is a very real tragedy. I know that young fathers die every day, and I weep for them when I hear about it. It is just that we usually don't get to know the intimate details because they are not famous.

I said a prayer for his children today and I encourage all of you of different faiths to do the same. Whether it is a prayer, a meditation or just a thought, I believe that it will cause some good to go to his family.

A young man was taken from us today, and many are weeping.

Thursday Notes: Matthew Stafford Likely Out Against Arizona

It is "not likely" that Matthew Stafford will play against the Cardinals this week. The coaches seem like they really don't want to rush him back, especially with how banged up the rest of the offense is. It's not like Stafford would be returning to an offense simply missing him; Brandon Pettigrew, Kevin Smith, Stephen Peterman are all gone, and Calvin Johnson is banged up as well. The entire offense is hurting, and personally I don't want to see Stafford back until he is 100%. Of course, it sucks that the Lions really don't even have a chance to win any games without him, but hey, if that winds up making it possible for a certain defensive tackle from Nebraska to come to Detroit next year, I don't mind.
Calvin Johnson, Louis Delmas, and Don Muhlbach all missed practice today. None of them have been ruled out of Sunday's game yet, but none of their situations look promising.
The Lions gave free tickets for Sunday's game to 400-500 random former season-ticket holders. Even with those tickets being given away, the Lions are still more than 9,000 tickets away from a sellout, meaning the blackout will become official any minute now.
Brian Witherspoon used to be Sammie Hill's teammate at Stillman.
In SI's revised 2009 NFL Draft, four players the Lions drafted ended up in the first round, including Louis Delmas and DeAndre Levy.
The Cardinals signed an extra kicker in case Neil Rackers can't play on Sunday due to a groin injury.

We at Project Franchise are saddened to learn of the death of Chris Henry, from everything we've heard he had been working hard in the last couple of years to make positive changes in his life. Does anybody have the inside scoop on what actually happened - was he pushed out of the truck? Did he jump or slip? We all know this story is far from over, however or whatever happened we wish his family, friends and Bengal Nation the best at this tragic time.

Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry has died

After battling for his life for several hours, Chris Henry passed away at 6:36 this morning.

Reports began to surface that Henry suffered serious injuries during an accident in Carolina, where his fiance's family lived. During what's being regarded as a domestic dispute, his fiance began leaving in a pick up truck. When the truck was leaving, Henry jumped into the bed. The police report said, "at some point while she was driving, Mr. Henry came out of the back of the vehicle."

Henry was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main, the local trauma unit, where he was placed on life support where his family later joined him. He died Thursday morning.

His story through adversity is documented. In 2008, after his last off-the-field issue, Henry began perhaps the most impressive transition into an outstanding young man. Not only has people taken noticed, but Henry became the model of second chances in the NFL. Anthony Munoz said, "You root for guys like that. You understand what a great opportunity he had, and you had to root for him." Many of his teammates, including Carson Palmer, took him under his wing to help guide him when he rejoined the Bengals in 2008. Palmer invited Henry to California to workout and Henry joined him. John Thornton said, "I feel he’s a good kid at heart who needed the support of a team, and I think he thrived on it when they brought him back."

By 2009, hesitations and character questions had dissolved when most fans only anticipated his patented long touchdown receptions he'd been known for.

If life teaches us anything, it's modesty, appreciation and humbleness. During times of tragedy, football becomes a trivial thing.

Football also unites people. Football turns strangers into friends. Football brings friends and family together. Football is the break in life where our worries are transported to a small corner in the smallest room.

But most importantly, football turns fans into family.

Chris Henry was only 26 years old.

Bengals WR Chris Henry passes away

ESPN.com is reporting that Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry has died from injuries suffered when he fell out of the back of a truck during a domestic dispute with his fiance. He was 26.

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry died Thursday, one day after suffering injures in a fall from the back of a pickup truck, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. He was 26.

Police on Wednesday described the incident as a domestic dispute with his fiancée. Henry was found in the road about eight miles north of downtown Charlotte.

While this website focuses on the Broncos, it seems relevant to take notice anytime that something tragic, and senseless, like this happens within the NFL. We are coming up on a tragic anniversary of our own in a couple weeks, which makes this even more saddening.

Our thoughts go out to Chris Henry's family, friends, the Cincinnati Bengals and their fans as the reality of this tragedy sets in.

If karma had an enemy, that enemy would be Chris Henry. Joe Reedy tweets at around a quarter after five, Chris Henry was involved in an accident.

There's no word on what the injuries are or when the accident happened. We'll try to keep updating this as reports surface.

UPDATE: Reports are tricking in regarding Henry's injuries. There's a lot of unconfirmed reports right now that Henry has died as a result of his injuries. One Huffington Post report says that "Henry has died in a North Carolina car accident". The Charlotte Observer writes:

Police say Henry was involved in a "domestic situation" with his fiancee at 840 Peachtree Road. His fiancee, who police haven't named, got into a pickup truck and drove away from the home. As she was driving, police say, Henry jumped into the bed of the truck.

The domestic dispute continued between the woman and Henry. At some point, Henry "came out" of the back of the vehicle. Police refused to elaborate on whether Henry fell or might have been forced out of the truck.

As of 6:30 PM, Bengals.com is still calling it life-threatening injuries, citing the Charlotte Observer's piece. ESPN is currently calling it the same. Fox Sports says that Henry is on life support, and the situation is "dire".

UPDATE II: Reports of his death surfaced from a fake Twitter account, writes PFT.

A fake Twitter account led to multiple outlets from newspapers to major sports and news blogs to repeat the information that Henry passed away.

UPDATE III: Family joining Chris; agents says Henry is battling for his life. Joe Reedy tweets that Henry's family was joining him in Charlotte. Henry's agent, Andy Simms, tweets:

Client Chris Henry - He is indeed battling for his life tonight, and our thoughts and prayers our with him.

Dan Graziano writes just how dire it appears when one source told FanHouse, "We don't think he's going to make it."

UPDATE IV: Family at his bedside. Reedy reported on ESPN that his family is at his bedside.

UPDATE V: Serious head injuries. Joe Reedy writes that Henry "suffered serious head injuries." As of 12:50 AM, Henry is still alive but still on life support.

UPDATE VI: Mike Brown speaks. It's 10 AM and the good news is that there's no news. Chris made it through the night and he's, at last report, still fighting. Mike Brown released a statement this morning, which reads:

“Chris has suffered grave injuries in an accident in Charlotte. We are monitoring the situation and awaiting further word on his condition. We are stunned to have learned this news, and our prayers are with Chris. Rusty Guy, our director of security, is arriving in Charlotte this morning. He will be in close touch with the appropriate parties and will offer the club’s assistance to Chris’ family gathered there.”
