Shawn Andrews done for the year, for good?

Some might say this was inevitable, but at least until last week we were trying to hold out hope that two time pro bowler Shawn Andrews would be able to play this year. He missed almost all of last year with a combination of depression and back troubles, the latter of which he had surgery to correct. The back troubles continued this summer and held him out of training camp and the entire preseason. In the final week or so of camp, Andrews received medial clearance to begin light practice and spoke about how much better his back felt... but then of course it tightened up, the pain returned, and he was ruled out of last weeks' game.

Now, he's been ruled out for the rest of the season.

So much for waiting around to see when Shawn Andrews is healthy enough to play. The Eagles placed Andrews on Injured Reserve, ending his 2009 season. It also likely raises question marks about Andrews and his future in the game.

When even the Eagles' website is questioning the likelihood of a guy playing again, you know it's serious. It seems now that Andrews' career may very well go the way of Corey Simon, who was another supremely talented player that could never overcome chronic injuries and other issues.

The need to make some sort of roster move was due to the signing of Jeff Garcia. To add Garcia to the 53 man roster, the Eagles had to make room. Rather than trade or cut someone, they decided to put Andrews on IR rather than keep hoping that his back will magically feel better as he takes up a roster spot.

This of course means that Winston Justice will remain as the starting RT for the remainder of the year. Currently, there is no backup listed at the position. Eventually, the Eagles are probably going to have to part ways with a WR if they plan to bring in another tackle. As of this moment, Mike McGlynn is probably the backup RT which is the position he played in college.

Of all the injuries so far this preseason, this one has to be the weirdest.

Head coach Andy Reid announced Wednesday that starting left guard Todd Herremans could miss the entire preseason with a "stress reaction" in his left foot, above the arch. Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said through a spokesman that a "stress reaction" is "a precursor to a stress fracture."

This is unfortunate news for Herremans, but it creates a big opportunity for a guy like Max Jean-Gilles. Plus, it should mean that the likes of Mike McGlynn and Nick Cole get even more playing time in preseason.

Not sure what else to say other than... at least it's not a torn ACL!

Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Preview - Interior offensive line

This is the next installment in our series of 12 positions in 12 days previewing the upcoming Eagles training camp. Rookie and selected vets report to Lehigh July 26th and each day leading up to that date we will bring you a preview of a different position battle.

The big uglies. The trenches... That's where we look to today as we take on the interior of the Eagles offensive line. Center and Guard.

The Bodies

Stacy Andrews, Nick Cole, Mike Gibson, Paul Fanaika, Todd Herremans, Jamaal Jackson, Max Jean-Gilles, Mike McGlynn, Fenuki Tupou, Chris Patrick. (Tupou & Patrick are listed as OTs, but they'll probably compete at several spots on the line)

Presumed starters

Stacy Andrews(RG), Jamaal Jackson(C), Todd Herremans(LG). Assuming all are healthy, it's pretty unlikely that any of these three won't be starting this year. The only real question is the knee of Stacy Andrews. He tore his ACL last year and had surgery in early January. Whether he'll be 100% ready to go by the time the season starts is not sure.

New additions

Stacy Andrews signed as a free agent from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Paul Fanaika was drafted in the 7th round & Fenuki Tupou was drafted in the 5th this year.

What to watch for

There's a lot of capable players and new draft picks fighting for a precious few spots on the interior of the Eagles offensive line. Nick Cole, being able to play C or G is probably a shoe in to make it... Max Jean-Gilles is the most senior member of the group fighting for backup jobs. However, Gilles broke his fibula last year in the Thanksgiving game against Arizona and it will be interesting to see how he's recovered and whether the injury will bother him in camp.

A guy I'll have my eye on is second year man Mike McGlynn. McGlynn was a 4th round pick last year and his nasty demeanor on the field drew comparisons to Jon Runyan. Having spent a year in the system with offensive line coach Juan Castillo, I'm excited to see how how McGlynn's development is progressing.

Another second year man to keep an eye on is Mike Gibson, who was spending time learning both guard and center last year. Jamaal Jackson and Nick Cole have generally been the only centers in camp in recent years and it will nice to see some more competition in there.

All that said, the #1 storyline is going to be the health of Stacy Andrews. If he's not going ot be ready to start the season, the likes of Jean-Gilles & McGlynn will be fighting for starting jobs... not backup positions.

Can we learn something from the Eagles depth chart?

Before I break this down I want to offer this caveat. The depth chart on the Eagles website is unofficial. After last year's PFT fueled mini controversey over the depth chart(read about it here and here and here) the Eagles have tried to make it very clear that the depth chart doesn't mean much...

However, it is fun to pick apart isn't it? Plus, you can't tell me that there hasn't been some thought put into it...

Here's the latest changes

- Todd Herremans has been moved to starting LT.

- Max Jean Gilles and Mike McGlynn are first and second string LGs respectively.

- Stacy Andrews is the starting RT.

- Leonard Weaver is the starting FB

- Dan Klecko is listed as a DT and no longer on the depth chart as a FB.

- Sean Jones is listed as a SS

- Quintin Demps is the starting FS

Obviously it's all subject to change and of course it's all unofficial, but the positions all make sense to me. I would not be at all suprised to learn that this is exactly what the Eagles are thinking.

Eagles suddenly looking beat up

Part of the Eagles' resurgence over the past few weeks has undoubtedly been the fact that they've been relatively healthy. This week, that looks like it will change.

First off, WR Hank Baskett is definitely out for this weekend with a knee injury. Not good news, but I think most of us would agree we could get by without Kendra's man for a week. However, the loss of Hank is compounded by the fact that Kevin Curtis is listed as doubtful with a calf injury and right now looks unlikely to play.

The wildcard here is Reggie Brown. This week Marty Morninwheg announced that not only would Reggie be activated this week, he could very well get the start along with Desean Jackson. Brown has been de-activated the past two weeks after seeing his role in the offense reduced in the weeks leading up to that. Reggie made his feelings about his role in the offense well known this week.

Before I got hurt, I was our leading receiver in two games,” Brown said. "If that's not enough (to get on the field), I can't do more than I'm doing.”

Reggie did have two good games against Chicago and Washington, with 10 catches for 163 yards. Brown says he's had no explanation for his recent stint on the bench.

"That's a question you need to ask Reid,” Brown said in a barely audible mumble at his locker before practice yesterday. "Then you can come back and tell me. I don't get answers. I'm in the dark right now. I just go out and play.”

Reporters did ask Reid... and the answer they got was what you might expect.

"As good a player as Reggie is, we cut back his reps a little bit,” Reid said the day after the Arizona game. "That doesn't mean that he can't play or won't be a factor in these games.”

"Cut back his reps a bit?" You haven't even had the guy wear pads on gameday...

So what Reggie will we see on Sunday? The guy we know has talent, the guy who has produced in past? A guy that should be playing with a chip on his shoulder because he has something to prove? Or will we see the guy that has discouraged us at times about Reggie? The guy who doesn't seem to have that competitive fire all the time? The answer might just mean the outcome of this whole game.

Elsewhere on the Eagles' injury list is LG Todd Herremans who is listed as questionable with ankle and shoulder injuries. If he can't play, rookie Mike McGlynn will fill in for him. Jamal Jackson says McGlynn reminds him of another guy on the Eagles' line.

Jackson said McGlynn shows "a little Jon Runyan out there." He also used the word "gritty" to describe the rookie. Opponents have used much more pungent terms to describe Runyan.

McGlynn says he's tried to pattern himself after Runyan.

"I've watched him a long time," McGlynn said of Runyan, the right tackle expected to start in his 191st successive game tomorrow, despite a knee injury. "I definitely pattern myself a little bit after him. Playing hard, and to be smart about it, too - you've got to know when to take your shots, when it's appropriate."

Shawn Andrews is back in town

Shawn Andrews has spent the last several weeks in California on the advice of his doctors after having back surgery out there. He'd been waiting to get the green light from the specialist out there who did the surgery to make the cross country flight back to Philadelphia. He got that green light and his back in town.

"(Trainer) Rick Burkholder and I will meet with him today and see exactly where he is at," Reid said Monday. "I know that the flight was a bit painful for him coming back. That's a long flight from (California) and he did feel a little bit of that. I'm not sure exactly how far or how close he is to being in football shape so we'll talk to him, communicate with him, and just see how he's doing and then continue to rehab him there."

It's interesting that the Eagles have still not put Andrews on IR, meaning that he an come back at any time. Clearly Reid is hoping that in a few weeks Andrews will be able to return to the lineup in place of the "backup backup" Nick Cole.

Reid also talked about the progress of rookie OL Mike McGlynn, who will now become the primary backup for all inside OL positions.

"McGlynn has been consistently improving," Reid said. "The thing that he does is he gives you a guy who can play all three positions. We feel very comfortable with him at any of those spots. He will work in and he'll get an opportunity to be active."

Max Jean-Gilles out for the season

Eagles right guard Max Jean Gilles is done for the season

The Eagles' already depleted guard rotation got even thinner last night when Max Jean-Gilles had to leave the game against the Arizona Cardinals late in the first half with a broken right ankle.

Jean-Gilles' injury is extra tough for the team considering Max was filling in for the injured Shawn Andrews. Now the team will turn to their 3rd choice guard Nick Cole to fill in for Max and Shawn for the remainder of the season.

This will probably lead to rookie guard Mick McGlynn being activated on game day.
