Alleman plays on the Chiefs’ offensive line. He started a couple of games last month, and then the knee went out. One week, he kind of twisted it. The next, another player ran into it. The week after that, Alleman was out. It was a discouraging way to spend part of his third NFL season, particularly for a player who has gone to unusual lengths to learn about his body and its risks for injury.

Alleman is one of the first NFL players to undergo gene testing, and it had some surprising results. It revealed that Alleman possesses weak Achilles’ tendons, a problem he would’ve never suspected, and he now devotes extra workout time to strengthen them.

The Chiefs are overmatched against a team with a lot of offensive weapons, as they showed in last week’s blowout loss to the Chargers. The Broncos may not be as stocked as San Diego, but between Marshall, Moreno and Buckhalter, they still qualify as an offensive team far too deep for the Chiefs to handle. Unless the Chiefs can dominate on special teams or win the turnover battle by a large margin, look for the Broncos to pull away eventually. Prediction: Broncos 30, Chiefs 17

They will honor Derrick Thomas on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium during the Chiefs game against the Broncos, retiring his No. 58 jersey.

Denver linebacker Elvis Dumervil just might sneak out of the locker room a bit early at the intermission so he can see the ceremonies.

The NFL’s leading sacker, Dumervil has always had hero, one player he modeled his game after.

"Derrick Thomas, hands down, because of his ability to get the ball out, to force fumbles," Dumervil said. "Seven sacks in one game; he was relentless, and that’s what I want to be known as, a guy who is non-stop; someone that you have to account for four quarters.

"He was the perfect defensive player. He played with great energy and attitude. That was my guy growing up. He just destroyed people."

Studebaker said it was a good thing that Vrabel was in his ear all that time, and Haley has said that part of his long-term vision for the Chiefs is to pack the roster with players such as Vrabel, a starter who’s willing to mentor younger players even if it means they’ll someday threaten his own starting job.

"As soon as he thinks he can help," Studebaker said, "he’s there helping. Whether it was on the sidelines during the games or walking off the field after the walkthrough on Saturday, any time he sees anything he thinks can help, he’ll say something."

Studebaker said Vrabel most often emphasizes communication among other defenders. If there’s clarity, there’s a better chance of success. Studebaker understood that, and he said that’s why he felt ready to join the starting lineup two weeks ago against the Steelers.

He had been taught well, and although he was on his own, he said he had been prepared well.

"We beat a very good team with him playing," Haley said. "… We had a guy that we didn’t know a lot about that now we have at least an idea of some of the things he might be capable of."

It’s been almost a whole season and very little has come out of Motown featuring former Chiefs head coach and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham.

That finally ended on Thursday, when the Detroit Free Press sat down to talk with Gun about offenses in the NFL.

And he had plenty to say, some of it very familiar to Chiefs fans who will remember the first game of Cunningham’s two years as head coach, back in September of 1999. The opponent that day was the Bears and they had a new offense in place, one that Gun called "frisbee football."

A decade later, his thoughts haven’t changed.

Former Chiefs defensive end Neil Smith is facing charges of driving while intoxicated and failing to drive in a single lane.

Smith, 43, was scheduled to appear Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court, but the matter was continued until Jan. 7, according to court records.

Kevin Regan, an attorney for Smith, denied the allegations.

"Neil Smith is an outstanding giver in many ways in our community, and he takes that role very seriously," Regan said Thursday.

Hindsight has brought greater understanding of the Broncos' flirtation with Matt Cassel.

What nobody knew then, but what everybody can guess at now, is that experience alone wasn't going to cure Jay Cutler of his flaws as an NFL quarterback.

Cutler's talent is off the charts. So are his NFL-high 20 interceptions. Josh McDaniels, the Broncos' new head coach, must have seen then what he won't talk about now.

McDaniels' offensive system demands a disciplined quarterback. A great arm helps, sure, but not at the expense of taking unnecessary risks.

It was a long journey for Andy Studebaker. Starting 2 yards deep in his end zone, the Kansas City Chiefs’ outside linebacker chugged and churned until finally being brought down at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 8-yard line.

Immediately, he was swarmed by teammates following his pivotal interception and return on Nov. 22 at Kansas City.

"You’re going on adrenalin during the run and when you’re down, you realize how winded you are," Studebaker said. "Everybody is chest bumping me and I’m like, ‘Where’s the sideline? I need to sit down.’ "

The Kansas City Chiefs indoor training facility is on the road to completion. Students had a chance to have their voices heard by the President of Missouri Western Robert Vartabedian and members of his cabinet at the second annual President’s Forum.

Many students who attended the forum had concerns about the Chiefs training facility and how it will affect Missouri Western. Athletic Director Dave Williams attended the forum and answered concerns students had about the Chiefs coming to campus.

"As far as I am concerned, the Chiefs facility will be called the MWSU facility," Williams said. "For 49 weeks out of the year, it’s ours and the Chiefs for only three."

A McCook youngster will display his football skills in Kansas City this weekend.

Noah Hofman has qualified for the regional NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition. Hufman will travel to Kansas City this weekend to compete with four others from the region. The football skills event will be held Sunday morning at Arrowhead Stadium prior to the Kansas City Chiefs-Denver Broncos NFL game Sunday afternoon.

Hofman is the 11-year-old son of Andy Hofman of McCook and Raquel Andersen of Crete. Noah is a sixth-grader at McCook junior High School.

Good morning Chiefs fans. Looks like it's cold as all get out in KC, and I can tell you it's raining like no one's business out here in Jersey. Here's today's Chiefs news.

Winter arrived in Kansas City on Wednesday. Temperatures were in the 30s, with the wind blowing from the north-northwest, gusting at times to 20 mph. That pushed the wind chill down into the 20s.

But there were the Chiefs, a perfectly good – and heated – practice facility sitting empty as they practiced in the winter conditions.

And, there was there head coach Todd Haley, not a child of the beaches of southern California or the hot house of Florida, but of western Pennsylvania where it gets plenty cold, walking around during the nearly two-hour practice wearing shorts.

Brett Favre is too creaky to throw. Josh McDaniels is too young to coach.

And now there's this: The Kansas City Chiefs are difficult to beat at home in December.

Favre and McDaniels already have done their part to expose untruths pertaining to them. But for all the talk this week of how difficult it is to beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in the season's final full month, the truth is they haven't won a December home game in almost three years.

True, the Chiefs once were all but unbeatable in December at Arrowhead. Starting with the 1983 season, otherwise known around these parts as the beginning of the John Elway era, the Chiefs have gone 37-10 at home in December.

But the signing of offensive lineman Jermail Porter is intriguing.

Porter, who originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with New England (where else?) this year, did not play college football but was an All-American wrestler at Kent State.

He finished sixth at the 2009 NCAA championships after winning the Mid-America Conference heavyweight title as a senior and going 31-4.

NFL teams now have new, stricter instructions for when players should be allowed to return to games or practices after head injuries, guidelines that go into effect this week.

In the latest step by the league to address a hot-button issue, commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to the 32 clubs Wednesday saying a player who gets a concussion should not return to action on the same day if he shows certain signs or symptoms. Those include an inability to remember assignments or plays, a gap in memory, persistent dizziness, and persistent headaches.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said the team has studied center Rudy Niswanger’s bad snaps from last weekend’s 43-14 loss at San Diego, and Niswanger will spend this week trying to correct those mistakes.

Niswanger delivered two errant snaps to quarterback Matt Cassel, who was in the shotgun formation.

Haley indicated that there was a "common denominator" in Niswanger’s poor snaps, but he wouldn’t reveal the specific problem. Niswanger said he didn’t know what caused the problems, but both he and his coach said the episode was enough to elicit extra work to prevent future mistakes.

Although Cassel said he never talked to anyone from the Broncos during that period and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs instead, he was unwillingly linked to one of the biggest offseason stories in Broncos history.

"It was crazy, because I was watching ESPN like you were and saying ‘How the heck did my name get thrown in here?’" Cassel said.

The Chiefs immediately proffered a six-year, $63 million contract because, clearly, Cassel was a franchise quarterback.

Today, Cassel ranks 24th in the NFL by passing yardage, 22nd by passer rating, 26th by completion percentage and 28th by yards per pass attempt. The Chiefs, whom the Broncos play Sunday, are 3-8.

Cutler and Kyle Orton, who were eventually traded for one another, haven't exactly set the world on fire either, but at least Orton can claim a winning record.

The best thing you can say for Cassel is that it's too early in his Kansas City tenure to say anything.

With his team in the middle of the playoff race, quarterback Kyle Orton wants the Denver Broncos to be playing their best football from here on out.

The Broncos hope to fix some mental errors and get their offense in sync Sunday when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs in the first meeting of the season between these AFC West rivals.

Denver (7-4) appeared to be well on its way to the West title after opening with six consecutive wins, but four straight losses dropped the Broncos one game back of San Diego for the division lead.

Denver finally returned to the physical style of play it displayed earlier this season in a 26-6 win over the New York Giants on Thanksgiving. It was the Broncos' first victory since beating the Chargers 34-23 on Oct. 19 and came four days after a 32-3 home loss to San Diego.

The Chiefs were driving for what looked like it might be a tying TD in the first half at San Diego when Charles, fighting for extra yardage, had the ball stripped away.

"It hurt. Its not like I got hit hard, or wasn't trying to protect the ball,'' he said quietly, his gaze fixed on the carpeting of the Chiefs locker room. "There was like five people around me and the dude just came around and stuck his arm in. He made a play.''

The Chargers went on to a 43-14 rout. It was similar to the 27-16 loss the New York Giants handed them after recovering Charles' fumble of the opening kickoff and driving in for a quick score. Being fumble-prone already sent Charles to the bench for one game this year.

One of his worst days as a college player at Texas was a close loss to Oklahoma. He was running for the end zone on one play when he was stripped of the ball on the 5. On another, he let a pass slip through his hands for an interception.

But he was touched when the great Earl Campbell sent word he wanted to talk. The two met in the Texas weight room. The older man, the one whose statue stands watch over the stadium, did most of the talking.

Haley, in his first season with the Chiefs, is serving as the offensive coordinator after firing Chan Gailey during the preseason. That’s Haley’s background and training, having spent the previous two seasons as offensive coordinator for the high-scoring Arizona Cardinals.

But Haley indicated that in his ideal world, the Chiefs would have an offensive coordinator who assembles a weekly game plan and calls the plays on game day. That would free Haley to concentrate on the numerous duties of a head coach.

"It’s fun calling plays," Haley said. "I’ve also said my job is to be the head coach of the team. If and when (hiring the right offensive coordinator is) possible, in my opinion, that’s the best way to run the operation."

Haley, like most coaches, has particular ideas about how an offense should be run. He said the firing of Gailey wasn’t a sign that he couldn’t hire an offensive coordinator and be comfortable in letting him make the calls.

"It’s still the right thing to have done at the time for this team and for this offense," Haley said, referring to Gailey’s firing. "In this case, this is the way (for the Chiefs) to be the most efficient right now. You get the right situation, and I don’t have any problem whatsoever knowing I could handle it."

The number stood out on the stat sheet after the Chiefs were blasted by the Chargers:
The Chiefs defense hit San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers once in the 28 times he went back to pass.

That’s just touching him; that doesn’t mean sacking him. The Chiefs were shutout in the sack department. It’s the third time this season they were not able to get the passer on the ground at least once. It happened in the first game between these teams and also against Philadelphia.

Based on the sacks alone, the Chiefs have shown improvement in their pass rush from last season when they set an NFL record for sack futility with just 10 in 16 games. This year, the Chiefs have 14 in 11 games.

However, that’s the second fewest sacks in the league. Only Jacksonville has less at 10.

The Kansas City Chiefs thought the worst was behind them when they beat defending champion Pittsburgh. Maybe they were wrong.

The overtime upset of the Steelers on Nov. 22 was the Chiefs' second victory in a row — their first two-game winning streak in two years. Everybody said their confidence was soaring and that maybe, finally, the long-struggling franchise and its rookie head coach had turned the corner.

Then came Sunday's shellacking by the San Diego Chargers, who won their sixth in a row, and a shaken team returned Monday to that old familiar drawing board, the one that says they're 5-31 in their last 36 games.

Maxwell - Your concern is justified. When it comes to the NFL, the phrase, "Any Given Sunday" is more fact than cliché. New England lost to the Jets. The Eagles and Bengals lost to the Raiders. The Packers lost to Tampa Bay. The Steelers lost to the Chiefs and Bears.

To avoid an upset at Arrowhead -- the Broncos are favored by 4 to 4 1/2 points for one of the few times this season -- keeping Kyle Orton healthy is paramount. There has been much talk about how the Broncos regained their swagger against New York, but they have to make sure they didn't lose it during their long break and upcoming short road trip.

Niswanger (prounounced "nice-wonger") accepts this award on behalf of every Chief who turned the ball over yesterday, which seemed like about every Chief on the roster. Nice Wonger's contribution was a shotgun snap that looked like a Ricky Vaughn fastball before he got glasses. Cassel didn't even get close to getting a hand on the ball. Larry English pounced on it for the Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs currently have one open roster spot with S Maurice Leggett being shipped off to injured reserve.

We now know that position will not be filled by recently waived Miami Dolphins LB Matt Roth. The Cleveland Browns claimed him today according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

The Browns have a higher priority than the Chiefs so we're not sure if Scott Pioli and Co. put in a claim on the former Dolphins draft pick. There was plenty of speculation stirring on Roth's availability.

Leggett missed practice yesterday so it was likely the Chiefs had a pretty good idea of his fate at that point meaning a roster spot would be open. Yesterday, Roth was waived. The fact that the Chiefs didn't quickly sign a player, like they normally do, caused a lot of us to think that the club put a claim in on Roth, and were waiting to hear of the results.

If that were the case, it ain't happenin' now.

So what position will be used on the open roster spot?

Running Back

The Chiefs signed Tim Castille last week but with Dantrell Savage's injury keeping him out of practice once again this is a position that the front office might look to

Safety

Strong and free safety is a weakness with Leggett's injury. This is the position I think the Chiefs will look to help the most.

Offensive Line

Not likely. The Chiefs have known about their offensive line for a while and have exhausted a lot of options. If there were a lineman worthy of a look, they would have already done it.

Receiver

The Chiefs seem okay at receiver but they've shuffled lots of them in and out over the past few months so I wouldn't count it out.

Once again, Kansas City Chiefs S Maurice Leggett was once again absence from practice today fueling speculation that his injury is a serious one. He left Sunday's victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers with a shoulder injury and didn't return.

Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com is providing us with a practice update this afternoon.

Those in the rehab area

The other headliner is that LB Mike Vrabel was not participating in the team portions of practice like he was yesterday. Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star suspects Vrabel could be out for several weeks. His participation yesterday was encouraging but apparently there was a setback (or this is precautionary).

RB Dantrell Savage also did not participate today after missing Sunday's game with injury. He was practicing yesterday in a limited capacity.

LB Justin Herron also did not participate. He missed last weekend's game with a thigh injury.

Alleman back, Smith No. 1 for now

G Andy Alleman returned to the practice field for a second consecutive day. He had an injury that prevented him from playing last weekend. Despite his presence on the practice field, Wade Smith was lining up with the No. 1 team at right guard.

Good morning! Just a note that I am away over the Thanksgiving weekend, so I'm unable to do another Arrowheadlines until Monday morning. I will likely be able to peek in from time to time before then, but there's no way I'll be able to do the morning post. I'm pretty sure Chris and Joel will pick up my slack. Just under four weeks after he walked into Turner’s office, Chambers has become a growing part of the Chiefs offense. He’s already caught 10 passes for 249 yards in three games. He’s got a pair of touchdown catches and his 61-yard play against the Steelers set up the game winning FG in overtime.

And, Sunday he’s going back to San Diego to face his old team as the Chiefs seek their third-straight victory.

"I’m definitely playing with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder because of the way things ended in San Diego," said Chambers. "I’m just looking to prove to myself and my teammates that I can help them win games."

Underdogs get a reward from KC Star

Clary, the Chargers' starting right tackle, suffered ligament damage in his left ankle during San Diego's win over Denver on Sunday and was placed on injured reserve last night, ending his season.

The Chargers signed Runyan, the right tackle who started every game in this decade for the Eagles before this season.

Runyan will turn 36 on Friday. He played 144 consecutive regular-season games for the Eagles from 2000 to 2008.

The Dallas Texans won the fourth quarter of their contest with the New York Titans, 22-13.

Only problem was the Titans won the first three quarters and thus won the game 41-35. It was the highest scoring game in the first season of the American Football League and was one of those games that earned the league the reputation of being wide-open and built on passing. A small crowd of 14,344 sat in the Polo Grounds (right) and watched the game on Thanksgiving. The game was also broadcast on national television, which helped create the aura of the wild, high scoring AFL.

The teams combined for 76 points, nine touchdowns, 814 yards in total offense, 527 net passing yards, as the quarterbacks were a combined 35 of 70.

Texans Fall On Thanksgiving To Titans from Bob Gretz

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is expected to play this weekend against the Baltimore Ravens.

Roethlisberger took a knee to the head in last week's overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Tomlin, speaking at his weekly news conference, confirmed that Roethlisberger suffered a concussion but the quarterback passed all of the neurological tests Monday.

"A team coming off two big wins like Kansas City is, I think helps our guys," Norv Turner said. "The most important thing for them is to put the film on and when we watch our first game, there are some physical matchups and there are some plays that we made because we were in the right place at the right time."

Now, the pressure is squarely on the Broncos, especially if the Chargers beat the Chiefs on Sunday. If that happens -- and if Denver loses any of its three remaining divisional games -- San Diego will all but lock up the division crown and the home playoff game that comes with it.

But if the Chargers lose to Kansas City, it opens the door for the Broncos to not only get back into the division race, but to reclaim the tiebreaker as well.

"It feels great [to lead the division]," Malcom Floyd said, "but Kansas City just beat Pittsburgh, so we have to get ready for them."

The veteran wideout was a Charger just four weeks ago. The Chargers released Chambers after a lackluster start, citing a desire to use his backup, WR Malcom Floyd, more often. The change in scenery apparently did Chambers some good. He already has more catches as a Chief than he did in seven games with the Chargers. He's the Chiefs' No. 1 receiver now that DeWayne Bowe has been suspended for violating the NFL's policy on banned substances. He has 10 receptions for 249 yards and two touchdowns, a strong total that includes a clutch 61-yard reception that set up last week's victory over Pittsburgh. Chambers has flourished in Kansas City, proving that his standout career is not yet over.

CHARGERS SCOUTING REPORT: Kansas City Chiefs from North County Times

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH

Chris Chambers, WR. Pretty obvious, right? After catching just nine passes in seven games for the Chargers, Chambers was claimed off waivers by the Chiefs, and suddenly he's turned into Jerry Rice. Or at least vintage Chris Chambers. In three games, he has 10 catches for a whopping 249 yards and two TDs, and don't you think he might want to prove something Sunday?

Jamaal Charles, RB/KR. This week's version of Eddie Royal, capable of hurting the Chargers in multiple ways. A week ago Charles rushed for 103 yards against the Raiders, and last week he returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a TD. He's averaging a healthy 4.9 yards per carry and 25.7 yards per kickoff return. He also has 23 receptions.

Andy Studebaker, OLB. Making his first career start last week, the second-year player from Wheaton College produced the first two interceptions of his career, including one he returned 94 yards. The takeaways set up 10 Chiefs points.

Sour Play of the Week: With Pittsburgh leading 24-17 with seven minutes remaining in regulation at Kansas City, Matt Cassel pump-faked right, then threw deep left 47 yards to Chris Chambers, setting up the touchdown that forced overtime. On the play, cornerback Ike Taylor let Chambers go when Cassel pump-faked, and no Pittsburgh safety picked him up -- three Steelers were standing like topiary in the middle of the field, covering no one, as the opposition's deep threat streaked deep. But the Pittsburgh defense could get even more sour than that. See below.

No Update on Chiefs S Leggett Until Tomorrow

I mentioned in this afternoon's practice report (courtesy of Josh Looney and Bob Gretz) that Kansas City Chiefs S Maurice Leggett wasn't on the field, nor the rehab area during today's practice.

There has been no indication of anything from the organization but past history has taught us that an unexplained absence from practice means there's a chance Leggett's shoulder/arm injury in Sunday's game is serious.

The Chiefs are already thin at safety and losing Leggett would be a major, major blow. The team has most definitely been shuffling free agent safeties in and out of the complex with the injury situations to the position over the last few weeks.

At today's press conference, head coach Todd Haley would not comment on Leggett or any other injuries.

As Josh Looney at KCChiefs.com points out, league rules do not mandate the Chiefs issue an injury report on Tuesdays. Those are saved only for Wednesday through Friday.

Like I said this morning, it's a strange week with Thanksgiving on Thursday. Even though the Chiefs won't practice on Thursday, they'll have to issue an injury report based on who would have practiced.

So, we're a day ahead right now. Tomorrow's practice will be like a Thursday practice, then Thanksgiving, then Friday's practice will be back to normal.

Chiefs LB Mike Vrabel Returns to Practice

Good news and bad news this morning for the Kansas City Chiefs. We'll start with the good news first, followed by the bad news.

Vrabel returns

LB Mike Vrabel returned to practice and was in pads according to Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com. This is a big, big development because it had previously been reported that he was facing 3-5 weeks on the sidelines. We're not sure how much he participated but the fact that he's out there is great news.

Update: Bob Gretz reports that it was Studebaker, not Vrabel, working with the first team defense.

Noteworthy returns from injury

RB Kolby Smith was out on the practice field running at full speed after suffering an injury that knocked him out of Sunday's game.

G Andy Alleman was back after not playing last weekend due to injury. He was replaced by Wade Smith last weekend but his participation today is encouraging for the Chargers game.

WR Chris Chambers was running fine after hurting his ribs in last weekend's game.

RB Dantrell Savage was back at it after missing last weekend's game with injury.

Injuries and Leggett not at practice

LB Justin Rogers was inactive last weekend due to injury and again did not participate today.

The big question mark right now is where was Maurice Leggett? He wasn't out on the practice field today and he did suffer an injury on Sunday. Looney said a Leggett update would be coming this afternoon.

In the history of the rivalry between the Chiefs and Raiders there have been many great games and moments over 50 seasons.

This was not one of them.

What went down at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon was 60 minutes of mistakes, blunders and poor football.

Afterwards the Chiefs did not care a lick. They stole out of the East Bay with a 16-10 victory, their second of the season. It was the seventh consecutive victory for the Hunt family over the Davis clan.

Jamaal Charles wasted no time claiming ownership of the newly vacant Chiefs running back job.
Charles delivered the Chiefs’ first individual 100-yard game of the season Sunday against the Raiders. He provided their first rushing touchdown, a brilliant 44-yarder on a fourth-down play.

The Chiefs needed every one of his 103 yards and that touchdown to take their second win of the season, 16-10.

After being the victim on a couple of key plays in last week’s loss to Jacksonville, Chiefs safety Mike Brown promised coach Todd Haley he would make up for it Sunday against the Raiders.

Brown was good on his word in the Chiefs’ 16-10 win. He intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter, both on tipped balls. The last one came at the Chiefs’ 10-yard line with just 30 seconds left.

"I had the feeling," Brown said. "I told him I was going to get at least one.

"You know what they say. You’d rather be lucky than good. I just happened to be in the right spot."

I’m not sure what Ralph Nader is doing these days but I think he should investigate and sue the National Football League in the name of anyone who paid money to see the Chiefs and Raiders play on Sunday.

To call what happened on the field at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum "professional football" qualifies as fraud, bait and switch, deceptive advertising and assorted other crimes against the consumer and humanity.

Of course, with two bad teams facing off, it wasn’t like we were expecting a brand of football that would remind anybody of the playoffs. It certainly did not. There were so many negatives in this game, so many mental errors, so many dropped passes, poor passes, bad decisions and penalties.

“It was a toss outside and I saw everybody coming and they didn’t have anybody inside,” Charles said of the touchdown run. “I saw a hole and I just ran. I saw Chris (Chambers) make a good block and I just ran to the pylon.”

The run and his overall performance in the game continued a maturation process that Charles has shown in the last month. A lot of people forget that Charles won’t celebrate his 23rd birthday until next month. He’s still the guy who likes to slide down the railing on the steps the players use coming off the practice field and returning to the locker room. He still has those moments where coaches and teammates aren’t quite sure he’s focused in the way he should be.

But he’s getting better and growing according to Todd Haley.

Offense: Larry Who? from Bob Gretz

JaMarcus Russell said he was confused by being benched Sunday against the Chiefs. He said he thought he was being productive, if not perfect.

Whether Russell, Oakland’s starting quarterback, was putting an optimistic face on another sour performance — or testing the limits of denial — he and his replacement, Bruce Gradkowski, were as responsible as anyone for the Chiefs’ 16-10 victory.

Russell overthrew receivers and underthrew them. He threw to their left, to the right and far above their heads. Russell, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL draft, was as erratic as ever Sunday, and it helped cost Oakland the win — and possibly Russell’s job.

Chiefs benefit from struggles of Raiders’ QBs from KC Star

Chiefs rookie kicker Ryan Succop made three of his four field-goal attempts Sunday, missing only from 52 yards. He made kicks from 50, 25 and 31 yards.

Succop has made 14 field goals this season, and he trails only Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud’s 21 field goals for the team’s record among rookies.

“There is going to be some bad, and there is going to be some good,” Brown said. “Hopefully there is more good than bad. At least that’s the way I look at it. I want to play perfect, but have I ever played perfect? No. It will probably never happen, but you still strive to be perfect.

“I just try to play hard and let the chips fall where they may.”

The chips fell into Brown’s hands on this afternoon, especially that final interception that ended a late Raiders attempt at a comeback victory.

DEFENSE: Redemption For Mike Brown from Bob Gretz

It’s hard to win the special teams phase of any game against the Raiders since they have one of the best kicking tandems in the league in Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler.

And while the Chiefs may not have won the kicking battle, they at least broke even on Sunday and that helped seal the victory.

Nobody was busier than Lechler, who kicked 11 times and averaged 48.3 yards a boot. He put five of those punts inside the 20-yard line and his long punt was 57 yards.

But Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt punted six times, for a 47.2 average and a net average of 47.5 yards. He knocked four of his six punts inside the 20-yard line and his long punt was 61 yards.

Raiders Have Problems & Other Notes from Bob Gretz

As the most inconsistent and frequently upgraded position group inches toward noticeable rhythm, the two Chiefs receivers are benefiting from the other’s presence. Bowe finally has a wingman, and Chambers has a receiver who relieves pressure while he proves he still belongs.

Bowe, the young receiver, was immature. Bullied by coach Todd Haley. Miles from his potential. Chambers, the old guy, was given up on by San Diego. He’s 31. That’s ancient in his universe. Now they’ve landed in the same wide-receiver corps, and both already are seeing benefits.

“We’re just trying to find out what pieces work together,” Chambers said, “and trying to build an identity.”

It’s difficult to know what to make out of this win over the Raiders because the Chiefs played against such a horrific quarterback in JaMarcus Russell. Sunday he had at least a dozen wide open receivers that he missed by throwing the ball too short or too high. Russell was eventually benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski, but the game still dragged on and on.

It’s a good thing that the Raiders weren’t coached all that well on Sunday. Tom Cable had the Chiefs on their heels against Oakland’s running game, and had Russell been benched earlier, we might be talking about a different outcome. Even without a passing game, the combination of Michael Bush, Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden proved deadly.

The Raiders' latest exhibition of self-hatred, a 16-10 loss to the equally young and defective Kansas City Chiefs before more than 20,000 empty seats Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum, captured in full a team caught in a web of despair, operating under a thin and paralyzed management and an increasingly distant or uninterested ownership.

In between, we find a coaching staff completely bereft of answers.

Not much has worked all season, and not much worked Sunday. It's beginning to look as if nothing the Raiders try, no matter how great it looks on paper or how well it works in practice, will translate into productive performance on game day.

The JaMarcus Russell experiment needs to end. It needs to end as of today. He is not an NFL quarterback right now and he never will be an NFL quarterback. He is a failed experiment, a dud, a $30 million washout. You know it and I know it.

The only person who doesn’t know it is Al Davis, Al who lives in a parallel universe where Russell has solid mechanics and makes good throws that hit the crummy Raiders’ receivers in stride and never sail over their heads or nose-dive at their feet. In the real world, JaMarcus Russell is a catastrophe, one of the worst football signings in world history.

Conner Barth Update for UC. =)

Connor Barth kicked himself into the NFL and Bucs record books Sunday. As a result, the likelihood of Barth getting the boot from the Bucs anytime soon has been greatly diminished.
"That was a glowing positive for us today," Bucs coach Raheem Morris said of Barth's performance, which included going 3-for-3 on field-goal tries, all of which were 50 yards or longer.

Barth kicked field goals of 51, 50 and 54 yards to set a franchise record and tie a league record and keep the Bucs in what proved to be a 25-23 loss to the Dolphins at Land Shark Stadium.

I’m no purist and cursing on the athletic field has never bothered me. But cursing at your assistant head coach, in front of your players and staff, shows poor leadership on Haley’s part. Haley’s game-day conduct continues to make him look like an immature coach who is in over his head.
