Chiefs Promote Dion Gales, Not Derek Lokey

When the Kansas City Chiefs released NT Kenny Smith earlier this week, it was widely presumed that someone would be promoted from the practice squad to replace him as a backup to Ron Edwards. And it was also widely presumed that the player would be NT Derek Lokey.

That presumption was wrong.

The Chiefs promoted defensive end Dion Gales from the practice squad this afternoon.

Gales is listed as a defensive end, not a nose tackle. He's also listed as 6'5", 259 pounds, which is far below the ideal weight for a nose tackle, backup or otherwise.

So is Gales backing up Edwards? We'll find out tomorrow but the timing of the transaction, and the current state of the Chiefs nose tackles would suggest that he is.

In nickel situations, Wallace Gilberry has lined up as a defensive tackle as well.

Gales' promotion also means that there is now one open spot on the practice squad.

Interesting side note on Gales: He had 85 rushing yards as a junior in high school. Can you imagine him running over 17 and 18 year old kids? Sheesh, talk about the high school version of Brandon Jacobs.

Rookie running back Kestahn Moore cleared medical tests today and officially became a Kansas City Chief. Of course, if you read Arrowhead Pride, you knew about this last night.

(Ed. Note: To be clear, Moore joined the practice squad, not active roster. I wasn't clear on that before. Chiefs still have one open spot on the 53 man roster)

Because of the weather, the Chiefs took practice indoors today.

Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com reports that G Andy Alleman and RB Dantrell Savage participated in practice, although it appears to be on a limited basis. While Alleman was in half pads like the rest of the team, Wade Smith took the first team snaps at RG. Savage was moving around in a boot on his ankle.

Jamaal Charles participated in practice despite at one point coming up gimpy in last Sunday's contest against the Denver Broncos.

The way things stand now, the Chiefs may not be done shuffling the roster.

Ron Edwards is the lone NT on the roster with Kenny Smith's release yesterday. Since it's one of the most physically demanding positions there are a few folks wondering if Todd Haley will promote Derek Lokey from the practice squad. Lokey spent time with the Chiefs in training camp and appears to be the only backup for Edwards.

As Looney points out, Moore's signing puts six running backs on the Chiefs roster including Jamaal Charles, Tim Castille, Dantrell Savage, Mike Cox and Javarris Williams. Moore is the only practice squad member.

Chiefs Bring Back NT Lokey, Release NT Favorite

Entering today, the Kansas City Chiefs had one spot on the practice squad open due to Quinten Lawrence being promoted to the active roster over the weekend.

Now that spot has been filled.

Familiar face NT Derek Lokey returns, Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com reports. The former Texas Longhorn signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in May of 2008. He spent most of the 2008 season on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster on December 19th.

He was released from the team during the September cut week this season. He spent much of training camp backing up Ron Edwards and then Chief Tank Tyler.

Lokey could be a valuable commodity at some point if current nose tackles Ron Edwards or Kenny Smith goes down.

And because they added a nose tackle to the practice squad, the Chiefs evened it out and released Marlon Favorite from the practice squad.

Favorite was signed by the Chiefs on October 21st of this season. He hails from LSU so his departure means the Chiefs can't feature an all-LSU defensive line with DEs Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson.

So, the Chiefs have one open spot on the practice squad. Do they sign someone straight to the practice squad? Does someone from the 53 man roster move down?

The Kansas City Chiefs have just announced the final round of cuts to get down to the league mandated 53 man roster.

Biggest shocker? Bernard Pollard. Wow.

After the jump, we take a look at the circumstances surrounding each of the cuts.

The following were released:

S Bernard Pollard

Wow. There were trade rumors recently and apparently they had some legs. This is far and away the most shocking move by the Chiefs.

Frankly, I don't understand this move. This leaves DaJuan Morgan, who was injured for much of last season as a rookie, and Mike Brown, who has been injured much of the last five years, as your strong safeties.

CB Jackie Bates

This shouldn't be much of a surprise. The Chiefs decided to keep five cornerbacks and it was down to Bates or Ricardo Colclough. Colclough has been a return man in the past and provides a little more experience.

TE Tom Crabree

It's not surprising, either. This leaves three tight ends on the Chiefs roster (Sean Ryan, Brad Cottam and Jake O'Connell). Crabtree had a couple of nice plays in last week's game against the Rams but ultimately it came down to a numbers game. Remember, the Chiefs gave up a draft pick in a trade to get O'Connell.

DE Dion Gales

A little surprised here. Gales didn't necessarily separate himself but the Chiefs will be a little low on defensive ends.

DE Bobby Greenwood

See above.

G Darryl Harris

I thought about the best chance he had to make the team was due to the low number of offensive linemen. Harris' name was rarely mentioned and ultimately proved to be expendable.

WR Taurus Johnson

Chiefs had a lot of wide receivers and, for a position where they needed playmakers, he apparently couldn't cut it. It doesn't help that he didn't return kicks and/or punts as well.

WR Ashley Lelie

A little surprising considering he showed a little promise and is one of the few Chiefs receivers with some experience. He's a fast receiver and the Chiefs don't really have that right now.

DT Derek Lokey

He was playing nose tackle behind Tank Tyler and Ron Edwards. It was going to be tough to beat out one of those guys.

S Ricky Price

Again, a numbers game. He couldn't beat out Jon McGraw and starter Jarrad Page.

LB Zach Thomas

Rumored to be injured and looking at retirement. Apparently he was healthy enough for the Chiefs to part ways with him without an injury settlement.

RB Javarris Williams

The Chiefs 7th round draft pick and the only draftee released. He's certainly eligible for the practice squad.

WR Rodney Wright

29 year old player who hasn't shown much thus far.

Placed on Injured Reserve

G Colin Brown

When did he have an injury? Behind Pollard, this is the second most surprising move. There were no indications he was injured. He was the team's fifth round draft pick.

Dowayne Davis, an undrafted free agent who signed with Dallas and was just cut, and wide receiver Marques Hagans are new to the team.

Since Durde doesn't count towards the eight player limit, the Kansas City Chiefs still need to add two more players. That may happen in the coming minutes as they update their web site roster.

NFL.com reported that the Chiefs also tried to claim center Andy Alleman but he was awarded to the Miami Dolphins.

**UPDATE** Adam Teicher at the Red Zone speculates that the last two spots on the practice squad could go to WR Scott Mayle and LB Weston Dacus.
