At the beginning of the season, I made a list of the ten players (click here to check out original post as well as any comments you or others may have made) I named the Most Irreplaceable Redskins. I attempted to take into account depth at each position, and identify those players who were most central to the success of this year's team. I thought that with the season on ice, it would be a good time to break out the list and see what we (I) thought, and how it worked out. I asked the question, "Who can we least afford to lose to injury?" The list goes from #10 to #1 (as ranked in the preseason):

10) Hunter Smith - Well, I think I nailed this one. Not only has he been a decent punter for us, he has chipped in on offense, accounting for two touchdowns this season. We might have lost the opener against the Giants, but when Hunter scored his touchdown, we were very much alive. And when he threw the touchdown pass to Mike Sellers against the Broncos a few weeks ago, it was the turning point in the game. Yes, I think his performance this season has been very much worthy of a spot on this list. Coincidentally, when he was out, we did not score any touchdowns from the punter position.

9) Derrick Dockery- Hmmmm...has he been spectacular? No. But he has been in the lineup every week. In fact, you rarely hear his name called, for good or bad. I struggle with what that should mean. You can say he has been our best lineman, but on this offensive line, that is hardly a compliment. And that is only true due to injuries. Coming into the season, here is what I said about Dockery: "Let's not mix words here--we brought in Dockery to be an upgrade, not to hold down the position until someone better comes along. He has to perform well and he has to perform well right away." Given the relative nightmare our line has been all season long, it is just too hard to consider anyone currently in uniform on that line to be irreplaceable. That said, Dockery has probably been our most solid player there.

8) Fred Davis- This preseason, all I envisioned was a stretch of games where Fred Davis took defenses by surprise and single-handedly saved our red zone offense. I always thought it would be in conjunction with Cooley, Portis and Moss though. I think Davis has turned out to be irreplaceable. His talent is undeniable and there is nobody else on the roster who could have stepped in to Cooley's shoes and done as well (Yoder included.) If he continues to progress the rest of this season and into next season, we should have two pretty solid receiving targets working the field from the tight end spot.

7) Brian Orakpo- I took some heat for putting the rookie in here. I mentioned that if he failed to dominate, we would get a steady diet of Michael Oher chants. Well, he leads all rookies in sacks and he has played hard all season. It is very refreshing to see a draft pick of ours come in and contribute at such a high level actually. Certainly irreplaceable for us.

6) Santana Moss- Well...not so irreplaceable this year, eh? We seem to lose him every year don't we? Either to injury or to invisibility. JC can't seem to get the ball to him over the course of a game in ways that change the outcome of the game. HE is by far our best receiver, but at this point in the season, we are finding ourselves all of a sudden capable of moving the ball through the air with any of our receiving options (to the extent we are at all capable on any given week.) The good news is that it would seem we are past the years when our passing game was a one-trick pony with Santana Moss dominating opposing secondaries. The bad news is that we may have wasted some of Santana's abilities by being unable to stretch the field with him successfully this year.

5) Jason Campbell - I said at the time that I felt he was easily our #1 most irreplaceable guy. But with both Todd Collins and Colt Brennan healthy at that point, I moved him down the list a little bit. JC has been a fighter for us this year. He has hung tough week in and week out. You could argue that we have gotten every scrap of ability and effort out of this player. While it is true that an upgrade at this position might have netted us an extra win or two, I doubt it is fair to say it would have meant playoffs. Our offense has too many other problems. Regardless of what happens next season, JC was irreplaceable for us this season.

4) Mike Sellers - I goofed on this one it would seem. On the strength of his lead blocking, I had him as an indispensable member of this offense. Then came the safety in Detroit, and the inability to punch in a few goal line carries early in the season when he just did not seem to get any kind of push into the end zone. Sellers has been a fan favorite in D.C. for a number of years so I am ready to chalk up this season as just a down year for Big Mike. But he has been far from irreplaceable this season.

3) Clinton Portis- We have had the chance to see this one put to the test. Ladell Betts proved to be up to the tack of replacing CP as it turns out. Maybe Ladell should have been the more irreplaceable guy? I think Portis was hurt right away this season and tried to work his way through it even though our rushing attack suffered. It is possible he will never be 100% healthy again in this league. But at that 100% level, I do think he is irreplaceable. Now, I find it hard to fathom we can get through this next draft without using a mid-round selection on a running back.

2) Chris Samuels- This was the most accurate pick on my list. Even when he was playing with a few nagging injuries, he was by far the best we had. Without him, we have shuffled old guys and new guys all over the place trying to find a mix that would somehow get us through the rest of the season. Levi Jones has played admirably well, but to say we have a replacement for Samuels is laughable. The only way we can replace #60 is at the top of the 1st round in an upcoming draft. And then it will still be a battle for the blue-chipper to fill those shoes.

1) Albert Haynesworth- At the end of last season, teams decided to run against us all day long. Remember that? It was awful. Enter Albert Haynesworth. His presence on our defensive line has made a huge impact. Andre Carter and Brian Orakpo are getting sacks. Linebackers are getting to the ball-carrier with more freedom. Our #1 ranked pass defense has a LOT to do with the push Haynesworth gets up front. The added pressure on the quarterback has been noticeable from day one. Without him on the field against the Cowgirls, our pass rush faded big-time in the 4th quarter. The debate about Haynesworth will always include his salary, but on the field, he is priceless and certainly irreplaceable.

I'll say I was right on with Hunter Smith, Brian Orakpo, Jason Campbell (only kill me on this one if you think Todd Collins could have done better), Chris Samuels and Albert Haynesworth. That is 50% and is not so good. Fred Davis and Derrick Dockery are close but because the offense has been so bad this year, it is too difficult to say that they are in fact irreplaceable.

Jason Campbell Gets the Start (Most Likely)

According to ESPN (and not the official Redskins blog), Jason Campbell will get the start vs the Eagles. This is not surprising given Campbell is the best QB the Redskins have right now. I can't help but think if Colt Brennan was active, would he be starting? Certainly the Fan Posts sections would be blowing up with the "START HIM!!" entries. I think at this point we're all in the same realization that it doesn't matter who we have under Center. This team is not going to beat anyone with the current Bingo caller play-caller or set of QBs.

On the Lavar Arrington show yesterday, Campbell said that in the past he was playing not to make mistakes, but given everything with being benched, he's just going to let it fly and be himself. Monday night for me marks week 1 for Jason Campbell. Let him be himself and use his abilities. If it doesn't work, fine, but trying to mold him into something he's not hasn't worked either. I'll never sit here and say Campbell's a pro-bowl QB, but let him play to his strengths.

I'm not sure if it was a dream or a thought I had, but I was thinking Jim Zorn should play QB this week. He seems to be the only one that can run his offense mistake free, so let's see how he does with this offensive line. Perhaps it would have been better to have DEs running untouched at Jason Campbell during training camp instead of 14 ounce rubber balls.

First, the obvious: Sugar has been shelved for the time being. I will be tackling a new writing assignment within SB Nation and I was asked to come up with a cooler name to write under. The best I could come up with was "Ken Meringolo". I know what you're thinking...sounds too much like an undercover secret agent of international intrigue. I guess you could say I followed the lead of one my heroes, Lt. Frank Drebin, and decided to use my maiden name.

Not that many tears (besides mine) will be shed over it, but Sugar will most assuredly be back. I will keep you guys posted on when and where my other writing assignments will end up. But on to the issues of the day.

Here is our crack at predicting the Redskins "Final 53". We have all been watching the preseason closely--there won't be many surprises. But we are picking a couple. Have at it (after the jump):

I put Rob Jackson in over Renaldo Wynn, Robert Henson in over Robert Thomas, Rayner over Suisham, and Anthony Alridge in over whomever you want to call the 53rd man to make it.

Why do I continue to keep Renaldo Wynn off my final 53 list? If you think like me, then you think Wynn is not really a guy who is going to get a lot of snaps anyway unless there is an injury. Rob Jackson is still a little young and raw, and I have not heard his name a ton but if you are going to keep a guy around to caddy for the rest of the defensive linemen, why not keep a young guy who has a shot to develop into a serviceable backup instead of a guy at the end of his rope who has played all of his best football already? This is the pick I will most likely be wrong about, as Renaldo Wynn is a pro who knows how to play the game, and was brought in for his leadership and experience this offseason. But I had to stay true to what I have been saying this summer.

The Robert Henson/Cody Glenn/Robert Thomas decision at linebacker is a little more straight-forward. I think Cody Glenn is at the head of the 3-pack. The decision between Henson and Thomas is not so hard when you remember one thing: Vinny drafted Henson. He hates to be wrong about his draft picks. And lucky for him, he is in the position to pronounce his rightness! Henson has made a few mental blunders during games this preseason, and dropping that sure interception against the Ravens hurt him (coming out of TCU, he was actually graded as a sure-handed linebacker.) But in the end, the team will keep the guy they picked in the draft, and drop the guy they signed off the street. Regardless of who is better--though let's not make that out to be a huge deal. Neither Henson nor Thomas factors huge for us this season, and if Henson can figure out to stay on the field for special teams by mid-season, he will be worth the investment. Finally, it says here that Robert Henson will pull off an Alfred Fincher kind of performance against the Jags and earn the spot.

Anthony Alridge...really? Vinny brought him in this offseason and the word from the inside of the building is that Vinny loves him too much to let him go. What's not to love? He is one of those "yards-per-touch" guys. He is going to get the ball in the flat on screens, pitches, and dump-offs and he is going to get upfield in a hurry. I know Marcus Mason has been a fan favorite to make this squad multiple times, but the fact of the matter is he does not give us something we don't already have. Alridge gives us a scatback, speed option off the bench that will prove very useful this season.

I went with Rayner over Suisham even though there seems to be a resounding consensus that Suisham will retain his position. I FEEL LIKE I AM TAKING CRAZY PILLS! How do you hold any benefit of the doubt in a kicking competition when you were last in the league in field goal percentage? Rayner has had the better kickoff leg and neither has blown the roof off with their field goals. If anything, I would be tempted to keep Rayner and then bring in either Mike Nugent (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) or Brandon Coutu (Seattle Seahawks)--helps to watch every preseason game!--to compete with Rayner in the week leading up to the regular season. Coutu has a good chance to make the Seahawks' roster, but if he doesn't, we wouldn't be the only ones trying to sign him.

Happy Tuesday, friends. As I write this, I have to tell you that I feel a little strange, because I was pretty disengaged from football this weekend, much more so than I virtually ever am, between July and February.

I mentioned last week that I'd be traveling to a pretty out-of-the-way part of New Hampshire, but it's 20 miles outside the capitol city of Concord, so it's not THAT out-of-the-way, right? Turns out, you can't get decent cell signal even on the outskirts of Concord, so in Warner, where I was, there is literally No Service. There's no cable or DirecTV where I was staying either, so by the time I got back to Cleveland around noon on Sunday, I had missed a lot of football that I normally would have seen. I did see the game, up until Tony Scheffler's unfortunate fumble, live, Saturday night, and watched the whole game on Sunday afternoon, so there will be some thoughts forthcoming. ST&NO will be a little lighter on other games than normal, but we'll have fun anyway. Ready.... BEGIN!

1. So, I have been getting asked here and there on Twitter (follow me @TedBartlett905) how many wins I think is reasonable to expect from the Broncos this season. Twitter is good for quick notes, but 140 characters doesn't go a long way toward explaining your thinking. I decided to dedicate some space here in the ST&NO mother-ship this week, to answering that question.

To start with the answer, with decent team health, I think the Broncos can be reasonably expected to win 10-11 games this season. Now, I know the Kool-Aid set wants to read 13-3, and the Negative Nancies are thinking 4-12, at best. Some very reasonable people think that this is a close to .500 season, like the last 3 have been. I kind of feel alone in the "fairly optimistic" territory, but I have three key reasons for my thinking, which I will share with you now.

a. The Baseline Reason - I have said this before, and I will now say it again. Think back to last December, and get a good mental picture of the Broncos who lost their last 3 games of the season. Now think about this season's roster. Now ponder the following question:

Exactly where, besides starting QB, is the team less talented now than it was in December?

I say that the answer is absolutely nowhere. I think offensive line, Tight End, Kicker, and Punter are relatively flat, and Running Back, Wide Receiver, Defensive Line, Linebacker, and the Secondary are improved to dramatically improved. (Really, I expect the flat groups to improve, based on young players developing, but the names are the same.)

If the baseline is last season, and last season's result was 8-8, and a tie for the Division title, how can this more-talented team not do better? Don't give me the nonsense about the schedule. Even if it is the best reason you can think of, it's still nonsense. Last year's schedule strength means nothing at all. Things change year-to-year in the NFL - injuries happen, players underachieve; there are far too many variables to simply assume that things will just stay the same.

This team is definitely more talented and balanced than the 2008 version. I am very encouraged by the performance of the first team defense so far, and just some improvement there should be enough to improve the team this year.

b. The Relative Talent Reason - Last season saw three teams take a leap from being very lousy in 2007 to being playoff teams in 2008: Miami, Atlanta, and Baltimore. This Broncos team has more talent on its roster than any of those three teams did. Those three rags-to-riches teams found winning formulas (formulae?) and two of them got strong play out of rookie QBs.

The 2009 Broncos have about 14 good-starter caliber (or better) players on offense (off the top of my head: Orton, Moreno, Hillis, Marshall, Royal, Stokley, Gaffney, Graham, Scheffler, Clady, Hamilton, Wiegmann, Kuper, Harris). On defense, the scheme is much better, the talent is a good deal better, and the results by the first team have reflected those improvements. I have also been pleased with the play of the coverage teams, which, to me, is the most important area to be good at in the kicking game.

c. The Leadership Reason - This team now has a couple of clear leaders (and had severely lacked them over the last 3 seasons). Brian Dawkins will naturally lead the way on defense, and Kyle Orton will settle into the role on offense. Some may doubt Orton, but I watched his reaction very closely when Jabar Gaffney dropped a TD pass, and he did what a LEADER does. He smiled and clapped, he encouraged Gaffney, and he basically said, we'll get them next time, no worries. You never, ever saw the Broncos previous QB do that, and I don't think I am going on too thin of a limb to suggest that Bears fans never will either. Some people just don't have real leadership in them. Kyle Orton absolutely does have it in him (see Brian Urlacher's comments at the time of the trade), and it will translate to wins.

I am also struck by the fact that Josh McDaniels has never been part of a losing team in his life, and I think that that can't possibly be coincidental. People with winning habits are the people who always seem to win. I have not always been complimentary of McDaniels, and it's certain that I will find reason to criticize him before this column is completely finished. A winner, though, is a winner, and Josh McDaniels is one of those.

The 2009 Broncos were 8-8 last season, and are significantly more talented from 1-53 now than they were then. Things will have to break somewhat right for them to maximize their success, but 31 other teams are in the same boat there. This is a team that can win the division, and be competitive in the playoffs. Once you get there, you never know what can happen. Just ask the Cardinals.

2. Thoughts and Observations on Saturday night's game:

a. This Broncos team looks like a good tackling team, and nothing could possibly make me happier. They are going to be somewhat vulnerable to the pass in the middle of the field, but if they consistently tackle well, that portends to being league-average on defense, which is all we can probably aspire to this season.

b. I will take that kind of play from Kyle Orton all season, and definitely take the Over on wins if I can get it. He looked very confident and decisive, and his feet looked settled down from the previous week's game.

c. You have to feel really good about the starting offensive line's ability to pass-protect. Seattle's pass rush never got very close to Orton at all, and that was a key driver in his success. The second and third team, however, looked very vulnerable as whole units, which, admittedly, they'd never play as in a regular-season game.

d. I loved the use of the smash route against man-to-man coverage. It worked like this, for those who didn't get to see it, or can't visualize it.

This works really nicely in short areas, like when you're lined up from the 3-yard line. You want man-to-man defense, because you're looking to make the two CBs bump into each other, or at least worry about bumping into each other. Anything to get Stokley a step to the outside helps, and if the QB reads it right, he makes a safe, easy throw to the back pylon, and only Stokley can get to it.

If a defense thinks this is coming, the CBs should switch to what is essentially a partial zone, and not follow the receivers. If you think you may have seen that before, you have. Champ Bailey's interception against the Patriots in the 2005 Divisional Playoff game came on virtually this exact route construction, and was forced by a good read by Champ to zone up, rather than follow the man across from him.

So what do you do if it's a zone? Well, you'd like Gaffney to read it as such, and break off the route outside of the inside CB, and post up just inside the goal line, making himself big for the throw. I would also run Hillis or Graham to the right flat, and think about throwing it there, because those guys can break a tackle.

e. Chris Baker once again looked really good, and I was pleased with what I saw from Lee Robinson in garbage time. He looks quick and active, and generally like the kind of backup LB I want on my football team.

f. Robert Ayers has taken a lot of criticism on MHR the past few days, and I don't think it is particularly warranted. I really like his physicality and effort, and the results will come, once he gets his technique refined, and his bearings with what is going on. It's way, way too early to judge him as a player. I believe that when it is all said and done, he will play a lot on running downs this year, and make his best contributions setting the edge. He has the best ability to do that of all the OLBs.

g. If Kenny McKinley doesn't know, he better ask somebody. The fumbled punt return was pretty bad, but the mishandled kickoff was worse, in my opinion, because nobody hit him there. He recovered fairly well, and made something of the return, but it was a lost opportunity. Mistakes like that are a good way to be a practice squad guy, or even get cut.

h. I didn't think Champ Bailey or Andre' Goodman had particularly great games, but they were still much better than the Broncos' CB performance in 2008. Goodman gave up two TDs, but particularly on the first one, he was in good position, and came very close to making the play, getting beaten by a great throw.

i. Kenny Peterson had a great game on Saturday. I hope he can keep that up, because getting some pressure from a 5-technique makes a defense really tough in passing situations.

j. The Broncos need to run the ball more and better than they did against Seattle. I said I would criticize Josh McDaniels, and here is some criticism. With no balance, you let defenses sit in zone and wait for you to throw it. Now, I think the key offensive goal on Saturday was to get Kyle Orton more comfortable, and with Knowshon Moreno out, you want to keep your other backs healthy, so I understand the situation, but the Broncos will need to run more as the season goes on.

3. Other games Thoughts & Observations:

a. James Davis is going to be the starting RB for the Browns by Week 5 if the Browns want to win more than a couple games this season. Davis was overshadowed some by C.J. Spiller in college, but he's a good player. Jamal Lewis is washed up, and can't be the workhorse for the Browns that he once was.

b. I liked seeing Tom Brady get hit. The only way to slow down New England is to hit Brady, and the Bengals seemed to have that idea in mind. Brady didn't look too great, incidentally.

c. Chase Daniel looked a lot better than Colt Brennan for the Redskins, and one of them is likely not to make the team. The smart money is on Brennan getting cut.

d. The Packers look outstanding on both sides of the ball, especially Aaron Rodgers at QB. I think they look like the favorites in the NFC North, although I am not sold on their offensive line.

e. Matt Schaub continued to look really sharp for the Texans, and they have to be very pleased about that. Houston is going to be very competitive in the AFC South, which, of course, is looking very tough, as usual.

f. Old friend Mike Bell had 10 carries for 100 yards for New Orleans, including a 46-yard TD run. He's the type of runner I think the Saints need in their rotation, with his predilection for running downhill. Reggie Bush isn't a real RB.

g. I got a look at Josh Freeman, and I think the Bucs ought to start the season with him under center. In fact, I would endorse starting Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez, too. I am a believer in getting young QBs game reps as soon as possible, unless the talent around him is so pitiful that the guy is set up to definitely fail. I think each of those three teams is clearly rebuilding, but each has enough talent to avoid destroying their young QB.

h. Sanchez looked like a talented rookie Monday Night - sometimes looking talented, and other times looking every bit like a rookie.

i. You know who is a great player? Haloti Ngata is a great player. There is nobody else like him in the NFL. I love Shaun Rogers, but if you ask me who the best NT in the NFL is, I would have to say it's Ngata.

j. During Monday Night's first half, broncobear emailed me to ask if I had been high on Paul Kruger in the Draft (yes, I had been, is the answer). He is going to be a double-digit sack guy for the Ravens, because he's fast and has a great motor. He even looked good in coverage Monday night.

k. Kruger's college teammate at Utah, Sean Smith, was my favorite player in the draft, which many will remember, since I beat the bejesus out of that drum. I would have taken him 12th overall, I liked him so much. Well, it turns out, he is probably going to start for Miami, and has vastly out-shined Vontae Davis, their first-round pick. Smith was the only CB I liked better than Alphonso Smith, and I am pretty sure I had him pegged right (and Alphonso too, for that matter.)

4. The Brandon Marshall media saga needs to end, and he just needs to shut up and play football. If he plays well and stays out of trouble, he'll get his money from somebody. Brandon malingering will hurt everybody, but most especially, it will hurt him. I don't think he is a bad guy, and I actually give him some credit for being pretty low-key with his comments to the media. I think he wants to do the right thing, and that he eventually will. The situation reads to me like the Broncos think so, too.

5. I'm shooting for debuting a video-package version of Lighting Up The Scoreboard on Friday night. I want to run it for the Bears game, because I expect the starters to play most of the game, and it's a good opportunity to do a pilot program. I will skip the Arizona preseason snoozer, and run it every Friday night during the regular season. Please check it out on Friday, and tell me what you think.

Since I was so disengaged this week, that is about all I have on football. I would comment on games I didn't see, if I were some MSM hack, but since I'm not, I'm going to do the other thing. I will be working hard on my video package this week, and I'll have a more extensive ST&NO next Tuesday. Have a great week!

Of course not. However, the internet and twitter world is blowing up with rumors that Colt Brennan is trying to woo former Cowboys' QB main squeeze, Jessica Simpson. I am not one to publish gossip rumors, but given the lack of entertainment from last night's 23-0 drumming, let's have some fun with this. This headline is a gem:

I mean, that is headline writing at its finest. Another article brought to light this point:

Good News for Colt, the Jessica Curse can't hurt him to bad because he has already won the same number of playoff games that Romo has.

The rumors on this are so bizarre with web chats, flirting, text messages. OK, I'm done with this. If she really wanted to get back at Romo, wouldn't sleeping with T.O or Wade Phillips be more comical? If there's ever a reason not to start Colt now, it's the picture I photoshopped above. I don't need to see that every Sunday.

Among other notable NFL adages, like "Wide receivers take roughly three seasons to develop," is the one that goes, "Defenses are always ahead of offenses in August and September." The scrimmage this past weekend was a glaring testament to this. With roughly half of the probable first day starters absent from the offense on Saturday, Jason Campbell worked against the second defense mostly. And though they moved the ball, they struggled to put it in the end zone. In fact, if you watched the post-scrimmage interview of Jason Campbell, it sounded strikingly similar to ones we saw last year during the season. I could swear I have heard lines like this before from JC:

"We were able to move the ball well."

"We should have gotten into the end zone but we will go back and watch the film and make the corrections."

"We have to do better in the red zone."

When you have a dominant defense like we do, is it fair to worry that your offense is going to spend August spinning its wheels? I think in reality the #1 offense and the #1 defense spend a lot of time apart in practice, but when they do square off, don't you get the sense that all of the positive energy generated by making plays is getting sucked up by our defense?

I think when you watch the first few weeks of the regular season, you can see where defenses are taking advantage of offenses that have yet to find their rhythm. Our offense spent an entire year trying to find a rhythm in 2008. If we go longer than September before we find our groove offensively, you will not be hearing about how it takes a few games to get on the same page offensively. You will be hearing about Mike Shanahan's whereabouts and Colt Brennan's readiness.

I also took note of D.J. Hackett's post-scrimmage interview. You have to hand it to guys like him. They are here long enough to get fitted for equipment and they are talking like they have been here for a decade. Nothing really newsworthy there, but I always find it funny when you hear a guy like that talk after practice or a scrimmage talking about how "we have a big year ahead of us", and how "we need to do a couple of things better and we will be a force." It is genius really...like they can interview themselves into our future. If D.J. Hackett can earn a spot on this roster, more power to him. But can we please get some more great interviews with Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas, Fred Davis, and even Marko Mitchell? If they are not careful, they will not have the post-game interview quotes to make this team.

Finally, is Todd Yoder going to make this team? I feel like he is that tight end that you have to have that can get out there and do the dirty work, while mixing in 3 or 4 huge touchdowns during the course of the season. Yoder has officially secured a spot in my heart usually reserved for guys like Terry Orr/Ron Middleton/James Jenkins. I loved those guys. And just when I worried if you could get Cooley, Davis, and Yoder on the same team on the same day, I am comforted by the notion that Orr, Middleton and Jenkins were all on the same Redskins team. Oh, and that team won Super Bowl XXVI (with another tight end you may remember--Don Warren.)

August 4: Our Recap from Training Camp Today

Another sweltering hot day. The practice started for QBs with Zorn throwing the ball on the ground and each Qb having to fall on it in a spooning/sliding fashion. Colt did it the best of the three. Todd Collins seemed to run up to it, squat, and fall on it which drew laughter from the crowd. Campbell also had an awkward fall on it which resulted in a quick lecture from Zorn.

Next up was practicing 15 yard screen passes. The QB would drop back and then Zorn would yell which square he wants the QB to throw in. Campbell's first pass was a direct shot, but he got a quick lecture on Zorn on footwork. The drill reminded me of a dunk-tank at a county fair. The crowd would go crazy any time the ball caught into one of the squares.

Next, the Qbs ran this drill on the run. Todd Collins looked a lot more consistent than the previous day I saw him (Saturday). The subsequent drill removed the net and insert in tight ends (no coverage). Fred Davis made a nice grab and his turn and momentum up-field is very impressive. As Sugar said before, Fred Davis is going to make himself known this year.

Hunter Smith was doing a few drills today. He was catching some Ethan Albright snaps for place kicking...one-handed. Everything Terl covered with Hunter being the best holder of all time appears to be true. I asked Suisham if Hunter has made a big difference. "Yes" he replied. "How is it different than Durant's hold", I asked. Suisham thought for a few seconds, laughed, and replied, "It just is." Seems to go with what Hunter said that every ball he puts down is the exact same, smooth motion.

At 9:30AM the horn sounded and the 11-11 drills commenced. I took notes of every single play, so here they are in sequential order:

- Fincher comes straight through into the backfield

- London Fletcher came in untouched and Campbell throws an INT. Zorn shouts "You got to earn it offense!"'

- JC fumbles snap

- Heyer slightly false started, Sellers held, but JC finished the play and connected on a long bomb to Randle-El to the crowd's delight.

- Todd Collins completes a nice throw over the middle to Trent Shelton

- False start

- Todd Collins 5-yard slant complete pass.

- Sweep to Alridge for no gain.

- Fred Davis goes in motion and stops as fullback. Colt hikes and looks for a screen to Fed which is well-covered, so Colt scrambles out of bounds.

- Jeremy Jarmon burns Jeremy Bridges and is able to bat down Colt's screen attempt

- Campbell quick slant to Randle-El for short gain (I got a flashback to 2008)

- Campbell overthrows Fred Davis. Cornelius Griffin got to the QB first.

- Betts run left for a few yards.

- Quick pass for 3-yards to Hagans. Will Montgomery playing Center and lost his battle.

- Anthony Alridge bobbles the handle off and fumbles. Kareem Moore scoops it up. Fan screams "Cut his ass!" which drew a laugh

- Dominque Dorsey runs left for a 5 yard gain before defense gets to him

- Todd Collins screen to Marcus Mason who runs down the sideline and takes a full hit from Robert Henson

--- Drills now switch to Red Zone ---

- Antonio Dixon gets in the backfield. Portis stopped for a loss.

- Campbell has lots of protection and scrambles up the middle for a TD

- Collins nice fade pass to Marko Mitchell for a TD

- Betts runs left for a TD. No LBs were there to cover that side and Robert Thomas was the closest one.

- Colt has a really nice play-action fake bootleg and throws a pass to Fred Davis in the end-zone. Zorn throws his hands up in the air in celebration.

- Pitch to Marcus Mason which is broken up by Rocky McIntosh behind the line of scrimmage.

- Colt Brennan can't find an open WR...looks around and runs out of bounds. Gets some coaching from Zorn.

- Dominique Dorsey run up the middle. Albert Haynesworth is an absolute wall on this play. No gain.

--- Back to normal field plays ---

- Offense is clicking now. Todd Collins completing passes. Blache is using prevent defense.

- Next 2 plays are Todd Collins interceptions.

I was able to talk to several players post practice which I'll write up shortly once I get my audio converted over (Moss, Cooley, Daniels, Henson). Overall, the offense did look better. They weren't getting run-over like I saw on Saturday. Phillip Daniels confirmed this when I asked him about it. Other notes: Orakpo continued to shine burning Samuels on one play (oohs and aaah's from crowd). Fincher was also very disruptive. It is still way too early to pass judgement on playes. Once they see some real game time can we make evaluations. Roydell Williams is out 3-6 weeks so the door seemed to have opened for Hagans, who looked strong, and Marko Mitchell.

The Washington Redskins Ten Most Irreplaceable Players In 2009

Everyone loves a good list. But all too often, these kinds of lists turn into a ranking of the team's best players. In today's Top Ten list, the criteria is simple: Who can we simply not afford to lose to injury this season? Better put, who are the top ten players that are central to the success of THIS YEAR'S team--taking into account depth at each position and potential contributions from each player? I have taken some creative liberties with the presentation of the list, and I have made a few judgement calls that I expect some of you will disagree with--I expect you all will not hold back in the comments section.

#10 - Hunter Smith - When I heard the news that Hunter Smith had been signed, I was just slightly less happy than when I heard the news Jessica Biel was doing a nude scene in an upcoming movie. Our punting situation has been a nightmare for a while now. Derrick Frost may have been a Hall of Famer during the week in practice, but he stunk out loud too many times on Sundays when it counted. Ryan Plackemeier was not the huge upgrade that blew up everyone's skirts either. Word on the street was that he was a liability as a holder. However, I heard his personal hygiene was beyond reproach (no need to bury the guy.) Hunter Smith is a pro's pro. While he has enjoyed the dome-life in Indy, his abilities are sure to be an upgrade in D.C. And with our team expected to be led by our defense, the field position battle will have to feature the skills of Hunter the Punter. He is known in the league to be a steady and rock-solid holder, having paired with Mike Vanderjagt to form one of the most accurate kicking batteries in NFL history (and again with Adam Vinatieri when they won the Super Bowl.) Finally, he brought down Deion Sanders in the following video that always brings a smile to my face.

#9 - Derrick Dockery - We are all aware of the less than stellar year the Redskins had on the offensive line last year. Pete Kendall was a band-aid the year before and performed well enough, but last year that band-aid fell off and got lost in the chicken salad, and Jason Campbell ended up eating that band-aid in his sandwich. Let's not mix words here--we brought in Dockery to be an upgrade, not to hold down the position until someone better comes along. He has to perform well, and he has to perform well right away. Early last season we ran left on some pretty important plays. With Right Tackle being up-for-grabs, and with Randy Thomas healing yet again from injuries, the left side is going to be relied upon heavily. Behind Dockery is Chad Rinehart, who we still know very little about. Samuels and Dockery are comfortable and confident playing next to each other. Losing Dockery would hurt us from a depth perspective and would disrupt the chemistry of the left side of the line.

#8 - Fred Davis - I kind of snuck this one in. I won't pretend to be an expert talent evaluator but when I watched him practice this off season at Redskins Park in Ashburn, he really got to me. Like Cammie from the 80's flick The Great Outdoors, played by Lucy Deakins. At first you're kind of like, "OK...I like this girl, but so far she's not central to the plot," and then as the movie goes on, every other storyline becomes meaningless to you and all you can think about is Cammie and how is Buck going to pull this off?!? That is my prediction for Fred Davis this season. At first it will be all about CP, JC, Cooley, the defense, Santana Clause. But by Week 6 (against Kansas City, where Sleepy's stat line will be 6 catches, 78 yards and 2 TDs), Davis will have asserted himself as a legitimate threat for us on offense. And I predict it will be him that becomes the key to our red zone attack.

#7 - Brian Orakpo - Well, I pretty much had to change my shorts when we drafted this guy. I spent all winter clamoring for an OLB/DE player to fill the Merriman/Ware hole in our roster. As a rookie, he will be expected to play like a vet. He will be expected to show up in the stats, and he will be expected to straight-up dominate. So it goes with high first round picks I suppose. Is it fair? Dan Snyder's $20 million bones say it is more than fair. There was an offensive lineman on the board when we picked Orakpo--Michael Oher--so this selection has all the makings of being second-guessed all season long. If he fails to be a force on our defense, it will be hard to hear anything above the fans shouting the f-word: failure. Further, for us to enjoy the kind of success we are hoping for, we need nothing less than a dominant performance from his position.

#6 - Santana Moss - One could argue we have lost Santana Moss during the season every year for the last 3 years. Either by injury or by opposing defenses denying him the ball, Moss has been silenced late in the season. Still, he is one of those "magic" players that has the ability to make a play when he gets the ball in his hands. Whenever he touches the ball, there is a chance the play can end with him scoring a touchdown. We'd all like to think that with Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly in the fold, Moss might be somewhat replaceable. Not so fast. The dude is an elite NFL player and on our team, his value is as much about the comfort and confidence he gives both fans and teammates when he is on the field as it is about his skill set. Here is a highlight video of him ( a little grainy, but you get the idea.)

#5 - Jason Campbell - I fear I will be scolded for either putting him too high or for putting him on this list at all. Truth be told, I am shocked that I am not making him #1. Todd Collins has proven to be more than serviceable, with not only a stellar performance in relief of JC, but also a late-season playoff push under his belt. Colt Brennan is the apple of a lot of eyes, and Jason Campbell has yet to become the "franchise quarterback" you want from a 1st rounder. But he is absolutely central to our success this year. Despite the off season rumors and activity, the investment in JC has only grown greater. Both he and the coaching staff have put in a lot of hours in the months leading up to training camp. Jason has worked extensively with Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, and he has quietly continued to act the part of "Starting Redskins QB" which as we all know is a position of high honor and visibility. He has the confidence of his teammates and coaching staff (currently), and let's face facts--you pretty much always have most of your eggs in the starting QB basket. If you think like me, and you think JC will in fact be second to the defense among the reasons we make the playoffs, you have to put him on this list, and you probably should put him higher.

#4 - Mike Sellers - This year might be the first year that I fully appreciate Sellers for exactly what he means to this team. I have both underestimated and overestimated his importance and role on this team in the last handful of years. There was a series in the pre-season a couple years back where Gibbs called for like 4 straight hand-offs to Sellers. He busted each carry for 7-8 yards a pop. I thought we were seeing the emergence of a Brandon Jacobs-type of role for Sellers. Then last season, the disappointment of him being (allegedly) unable to punch the ball in against Cincinnati on the goal line tempered that expectation. In 2005, he had 8 TDs (7 through the air, 1 on the ground), but last year just managed 1 score. So how does he land at #4 on this list? Special teams notwithstanding, he has become an invaluable lead blocker. Clinton Portis loves to get in behind Sellers and every time they both make it to the edge, you know a 1st down is a gimme. Players like Sellers seem to get marginalized by their organizations over time (see Lorenzo Neal from the San Diego Chargers a few years back.) Here's hoping the team figures out a responsible way to keep him with the team beyond this year. Sellers has become a destructive force in what has been at times an unstoppable running game. We can ill afford to lose him this year if we hope to keep Clinton Portis from taking on the first and second tacklers at the point of attack. And anything Sellers is able to add in the way of short-yardage situations for us is gravy.

#3 - Clinton Portis - Thanks to fantasy football, I have finally learned the lesson that eludes so many fans and even league personnel men: running backs really do grow on trees. So what is CP doing this high on the list? Because there are exceptions to every rule. Like for example, to those that say "No means No", I say, "Sometimes No means Maybe." ("Reservation for 1 in hell please? Yes, I'll hold.") CP is a stud...a freak of nature athletically that has enjoyed a great deal of success at running back for 7 seasons. That is twice the average career for running backs (somebody call me out on this if I am wrong, but I think the average career of a running back is roughly 3 years.) From an odds perspective there is a better chance Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the Growing Pains movie than a running back becoming highly productive in his 8th year. Yet that is what we are banking on this season. Clinton is the man yet again this year, and without him, the ship loses a lot of direction and purpose. More than anything, the ship loses a lot of identity. For better or worse, the identity of this team and specifically the offense is tied to Clinton Portis.

#2 - Chris Samuels - We spoke to a retired former Redskin a few months ago (who shall remain nameless for now) and he said that there was only ONE player on the whole roster he would label "untouchable"--only one player on the entire roster that he would start all over with tomorrow: Chris Samuels. Whether you agree with it or not, it kind of takes your breath away...wait for it...like Nicole Eggert in Charles in Charge. She was only 15 when she started out as Jamie Powell but I was only 10, so the things I was thinking about doing to her were totally legal (as a 10-year old, this consisted mostly of picturing her in a bathing suit, but by the time she was 18, I was 13, so my dream date of me, her and Samantha Micelli (Alyssa Milano) from Who's The Boss was ON.) As we discussed above, the offensive line was a debacle last year. Samuels is the class of our line. If he goes down, our team's playoff chances disappear faster than a bag of blow left alone in a room with Corey Haim. (It's not fair to beat up on Corey Haim you say? Go back and watch Lucas again. All these years later, and both Charlie Sheen and Jeremy Piven are killing it. Corey Haim has only Corey Haim to blame.)

#1 - Albert Haynesworth - If you go to a nice restaurant and order the most expensive thing on the menu, like the Filet Mignon plate, it ain't going to work for you if the steak is undercooked and gives you parasites. A good bowl of mashed potatoes or creamed spinach is not going to save the dish. We paid for the best cut of meat on the market. It had damn well better taste good and be cooked right. Haynesworth has to absolutely dominate this season for the Redskins to both save face and make some noise in the NFC. Is saving face really that important? I think so, because he represents yet another in a long line of high-priced talent brought in by Snyder to win now. This has yet to really pan out for Snyder and has left us coming up with some pretty lame one-liners over the years.

"Mark Carrier could really be the difference this season."

"Brandon Lloyd is poised to break out this season."

"Adam Archuleta should really solidify our secondary."

"Bruce Smith attacking the QB is going to get us to the next level this season."

"Chad Morton is the answer in the return game."

"Jeff George is the right guy for this offense."

OK, you get the idea. Redemption is absolutely chief among the goals for Haynesworth this year in my humble opinion. And the truth is it will come hand-in-hand with domination at the point of attack. If Blache can move him up and down the line of scrimmage effectively and keep the opposing offense guessing, Haynesworth is capable of providing the same kind of impact that Reggie White gave the Packers when he signed there and subsequently led them to a Super Bowl. Without Haynesworth, we lose twice really. We continue to get berated by everyone for trying and failing to "buy a championship" and we would be on the outside looking in yet again come December.

As I review the list, LaRon Landry jumps off the page as the one I wish I would have found a spot for, but I will have to live with leaving him off, despite my constant proclamations that Landry is an elite player. I guess I dig our safety group right now, and am hopeful that a Chris Horton/ Kareem Moore backfield would hold up (if you can't lie to yourself, who can you lie to?)

Other Honorable Mentions: Ladell Betts, London Fletcher, Carlos Rogers, and Ethan "The Red Snapper" Albright.

I expect that London will be the one I get the most grief for excluding, so let me seed my excuse for leaving him out: I love Alfred Fincher, and think that if it came down to it, he would be the feel-good story of the league stepping in and up to replace London. Think Mike Seaver-gets-Chelsea Noble...yeah, that kind of feel good.

I made it over to a sweltering Redskins Park today to catch day three of Redskins practice. They were in pads and were tackling at times. Joe Jacoby and Joe Theismann were on-hand as well.

Did not practice: Carlos Rogers (soreness) and FB Eddie Williams (hamstring injury)

Here's my notes:

- Rookie mistakes stood out.
Marko Mitchell dropped an easy ball. Anthony Alridge also dropped an easy pass and fumbled on a hand-off exchange. On the 1-1 drills Kevin Barnes and Doug Dutch got worked over.

- Devin Thomas did not drop a ball all day.

- Santana Moss looks like he is in mid-season form.
(Made a diving catch in the center of the end zone)

The QBs were the only unit that were front and center the entire practice for the crowd. It is crystal clear that Campbell is the best Quarterback of the four out there. And this is not me saying this is a fan or personal preference...it's just a fact after watching them all throw.

- Jason Campbell looked good
(Had a lot of zip on the ball, but had a couple of bad tosses and a couple plays where he held the ball too long. He had a gorgeous 30-yard pass to Todd Yoder, threading the ball through a lunging Laron Landry)

- Todd Collins did not look good today.
(Overthrows and didn't see a blitzer on another play)

- Colt Brennan was up and down
(Had some nice throws but missed fired on a cross pattern to Moss and held the ball too long on other plays)

Offense spent 15 minutes doing red zone drills. One of which was a corner slant to Malcolm Kelly who was 1-1 with Fred Smoot. Campbell threw a perfect ball, which Kelly went up for but Smoot made an incredible play to break it up. Too bad I didn't hear the audio afterwards on that.

- Chris Horton made an incredible play to break up a pass to Santana.

- Albert Fincher was all over the field. Made multiple plays.

- Keith Eloi and Malcom Kelly both had spectacular catches

As for the lines:

One one play, Renaldo Wynn absolutely barrelled over Mike Williams putting him on his back. The next play Wynn tried a speed move around and Williams had excellent footwork to keep him outside the pocket. So, it's clear Mike is still has a lot of catchup to do regarding the physical part of the game. It was quite impressive however on a running play for Marcus Mason, Mike Williams pushed left and created a running lane the size of I-95.

Haynesworth wasn't in on that play. Speaking of Haynesworth, he was getting double-teamed all the times I saw. He was giving Derrick Dockery fits today.

Chris Wilson stood out multiple times playing left end. His first step off the line ia a blur. He got to the QB real quick.

Orakpo played a few snaps with his hands on the dirt. One play was a run right at him and he bear-hugged the RB immediately. No gain.

"The defensive line is wreaking havoc in our backfield right now. We have to block these guys. I'm excited on one hand, and then on the other I want to get going, too." - Coach Zorn

Zorn called the offensive line a "work in progress."

"I've seen some things I've wanted to see, but we're not done yet," he said. "Our guys are working hard and they're going to get better."

He said that while Stephon Heyer is working with the first team offensive line, he has not yet secured the starting job. He won't determine that until after preseason games.

The only real downer of the day is that a bottled water cost $4. In that heat, water is imperative and I was none too happy at those kind of prices. The burgers ($6) and bag of chips ($2) seemed fair, but for $4 a bottled water, I'd almost rather pass out and let the EMS hydrate me for free. There was a single, misting fan available but there was an army of kids hogging enjoying that.

3 Reasons Why a QB Controversy is Coming for the Washington Redskins

1.) Zorn is not sold on Campbell.
Coach Zorn recently said he 'thinks" Campbell can make the jump in production like Matt Hasselbeck did, but obviously did not go as far to say he's there. With the defense rolling, the front office will not be patient to ride out Jason Campbell through the end of the year. The Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez fiascos are obvious proof of this.

2.) Colt Brennan vs Todd Collins.
People want to talk about the RT being the #1 competition in training camp. I disagree. Whoever wins the RT spot will be adequate. The REAL battle is for the #2 Quarterback spot. If Colt is the next Jay Cutler gun-slinger this pre-season and wins the job from TC, that brings Campbell's number of games to keep his job down dramatically. I can already imagine the hundreds of forums and blogs headlining "START COLT NOW!!" week three if Campbell has anything less than five total touchdowns (and Colt is #2 on the depth chart).

3.) The fact Colt is playing the majority of the pre-season games.
There is no real reason to sit Campbell. He is still learning this offense and needs competitive field time with Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. In addition, the Redskins added multiple, new offensive lineman. I would think the Redskins' coaching staff would want to give the "starting" offense as much time as possible together to work out all the kinks, especially since Zorn and Campbell said they added another 80 offensive plays over the OTAs. It seems to me that Zorn wants to give Colt as much time as possible to assess his skills and have him ready to play when if Campbell falters.

All that aside. I do feel for Todd Collins. He is the proto-typical Joe Gibbs-like Super Bowl QB. He's not flashy, but he throws a great ball, makes few mistakes, and is smart on the field. #15 jerseys aren't cash machines and since the Redskins are looking for a "long-term" solution, TC really has no chance at ever seeing the #1 spot for consecutive games.

Of course, I don't think the QB controversy will be as epic as the Jay Schroeder vs Doug Williams one, which ESPN ranked #7 of all time [Video]
