The Arizona Cardinals weren't the only team in the NFC West that made some roster moves this week, but even mid-season roster moves aren't the lead story this week. First it's worth mentioning that the Cardinals will make one more roster move in the upcoming couple of days because the Bengals have signed fullback Fui Vakanpuna off the Cardinals practice squad. It'll be interesting to see who the Cardinals sign to fill the vacant practice squad spot.

St. Louis Rams: Normally we list the teams in order of division standings but when a team breaks a 17 game losing streak, they deserve some recognition. It had literally been 378 days since the Rams last won a regular season game and Steven Jackson (149 yards rushing) did most of the heavy lifting against the equally hapless Lions. Despite the win the Rams still have major questions at quarterback and some are starting to think that Marc Bulger's career is very near the end. One bright spot, outside of Jackson of course, is the development of the offensive line though, especially first round pick Jason Smith. The Rams also made a roster move, releasing wide receiver Tim Carter and signing cornerback Danny Gorrer.

San Francisco 49ers: The Niners lost a game to the Colts that was closer than just about everyone expected (18-14) but the Niners aren't waving the "moral victory" flag either. Not only does this loss push their current losing streak to three but they also lost three significant starters during the game. Joe Staley (MCL and PCL strain) is expected to miss six weeks, Nate Clements (fractured scapula) is expected to miss six to eight weeks and Demetric Evans (AC sprain) is expected to miss at least three weeks. These injuries forced the Niners to make a couple of moves, signing cornerback Keith Smith (formerly of the Lions) and releasing seldom used wide receiver Michael Spurlock. Their also expected to make at least one more roster move (possibly pulling up an OT from their practice squad). Considering that Sunday's game was Alex Smith's first start since 2007, here's also a complete breakdown of his peformance and Niner's fans have also determined that the NFC West will come down to a dog fight (we can still say "dog fight" right?) between their team and the Cards.

Seattle Seahawks: Following thier second consecutive lopsided loss, which dropped them to 2-5, the Seahawks seem to be cleaining house. In the past two days they've made nine roster moves including the release of veteran running back Edgerrin James. Also included in the released/cut department include Travis Fisher and C.J. Wallace. New to the 53 man roster will be Mike Hass (WR), Roy Lewis (CB) and Jamar Adams (S), all of whom were on their practice squad. Filling thier now vacant practice squad spots will be Trae Williams (CB), DeAngelo Willingham (CB) and Devin Moore (RB). Needless to say roster cleaning like this is indicative of a team that has given up on any hopes of competing this season and moving on with the hopes of allowing younger players to grow during the remaining nine games. One interesting thought is that some Hawks fans are wondering if it's time to pass the torch from Matt Hasselbeck to Seneca Wallace (part I and II). Needless to say we're watching the demise of the Hawks and it could turn into quite a show over the next couple of seasons.

Enough action happens at the fringe of Seattle's roster that I could fill a day's worth of posts just about Louis Rankin and C.J. Wallace. I don't. A time comes when enough moves have piled up that the aggregate is newsworthy. That time is today - so says I.

Seattle released C.J. Wallace and signed Jamar Adams. Wallace has long since expended his practice squad eligibility, and after watching the Hawks return teams get burned again and again, Wallace has finally ended his job as special teams ace. I doubt this move is an indictment of Wallace's special teams play, though he hasn't recorded a tackle since week 3, as much as it's a forced move towards the future. Consider this the Seahawks blowing up their roster with firecrackers. Adams is a far better safety talent than Wallace and with Lawyer Milloy all covered in cobwebs and cast in sepia tones, could see action this season.

I like Adams talent but I haven't liked his play. Louis Rankin played his himself into a Seattle homecoming, but his talent fails to tantalize. Rankin is tall and thin and reportedly was timed at 4.55 in the forty. He underperformed for most of his college career and then broke out as a senior. Rankin fills the Seahawks need for a Husky, but short of a surprising late career break out, and don't be mistaken, as young as he is, Rankin is already late into his professional career, Rankin is little more than roster fodder with hope tagged on like tiny post it notes. "For Sunday: Don't screw up."

Mike Hass is back, entering the gangsta rap phase of his professional career. He wants to taste your nectar, he does.

Seattle also added Roy Lewis. You might be better off reading this. Lewis was a standout at University of Washington when the standards for standout was standing without assistance.

The team filled out its practice squad with tiny, kinda speed back Devin Moore - we all remember him -, a corner named Trae Williams I know little about, and DeAngelo Willingham. Willingham has by the best set of tools of the bunch and may be transitioned to safety.

Seattle's practice squad is headlined by a couple new faces: Roy Lewis formerly of Washington and Blake Schlueter. Schlueter is a former Horned Frog. Years of cosmetic surgery have...

His acquisition is interesting. Like Vallos, Schlueter is an undersized college star that only fits in a very-pure zone -blocking scheme. If you're looking for further writing on the wall about the future of Chris Spencer, note Schlueter is 286; that Schlueter is another bad-frame, good at football pick. A guy Alex Gibbs might like.

Lewis should be familiar to most. I assume the Husky standout and former captain is the honorary Michael Bumpus signing with side benefits. He could have been hidden on a bad team.

It's Labor Day and I want to honor my former and forever brothers at Teamsters Local 162. Bend those knees! Field Gulls will be fully active again tomorrow, but today some light writing, barbecue and beer.

Seattle will announce its practice squad sometime this afternoon. When it's up I'll post it with all due commentary. Some names are confirmed. Logan Payne and Mike Hass made it. Payne has some small upside, but I wonder when that Biletnikoff sheen will come off Hass. He hasn't done anything as a pro since being drafted. He has eight receptions for 101 yards in 12 preseason games, and his production in the preseason has dropped three straight seasons.

Jamar Adams is in. It's good Seattle hasn't given up on his potential entirely, but he hasn't developed. Adams is quickly becoming an afterthought.

The final notable name of those announced is Devin Moore. Moore took my criticism of being a routine all-speed and no-size non-drafted free agent running back and turned it into 75 yards...on 22 carries. Eh. Buried in the hoopla of a couple nice cuts was that Moore ran eight times for no gain or negative yards. Oakland has had one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL for the last two seasons. Years of bad drafting has left their depth as thin as Al Davis' patience. Moore struggled against one of the worst rush defenses in professional football. Today he is a Seahawk, but he's no Lynell Hamilton.

Seattle has announced its 53-man roster. That roster does not include Marcus Trufant, who will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. That's bad news, but hopefully the right decision. Seattle rushed Deion Branch last season and effectively lost his roster spot.

The roster reflects a major youth movement with some fringe guys unseating former regulars. Could this be reflective of changing opinions on replacement value? A movement towards freeing cap space next year?

10 Quick Opinions:

Walter Jones is on the roster: This speaks for itself. Get well Franchise.
Seattle is super thin at Corner and Safety: This could foreshadow further moves.
Courtney Taylor Cut: It came down to the fourth preseason game and Ben Obomanu put the decision to rest.
Seattle deep at linebacker but no D.D. Lewis: I've never been a huge fan of Lewis. He is credited for being able to play any linebacker position, but he doesn't seem to play any of them well.
Special Teams: The lack of depth at wide receiver and safety means Seattle could struggle on cover units.
No Jordan Kent: Kent wasn't placed on IR. He was waived with a settlement. I think that ends his playing career. Other teams might ask, but will Kent answer?
Cameron Morrah: I didn't see much from Morrah, so Seattle must be convinced he is too good to cut. Interesting talent Seattle will let mature, but if a starting tight end goes down, I don't think Morrah is ready to contribute.
Derek Walker: Great size and showed up in the preseason. Walker could be the dark horse replacement for Cory Redding. Get your head up, today you are an NFL player.
Lots of depth on Offensive Line: With this many question marks and injuries, can you blame the Seahawks?
This is not over: One deadline met, but days to complete this roster. I doubt it will like it does today next Sunday.

Seahawks Face the Bad Part of a Good Problem (Part 2: Staying Lean at Safety)

Seattle can handle its superabundance of defensive linemen by running lean at another position and leaning on its starters. If it does, it should do so at safety. Starters Brian Russell and Deon Grant are fixtures, and have combined to miss four games in their last 240. They were each involved in over 99% percent of Seattle's defensive snaps. Russell and Grant defy depth.

Seattle could then shift Jordan Babineaux temporarily to dime back and cut C.J. Wallace. Wallace is Seattle's top gunner and proven to be an asset on special teams, but as commodity, because of his limitations as a safety, recent injuries and low upside, a non-asset on the open market. Seattle could temporarily cut Wallace and re-sign him when its roster has stabilized. Wallace is a local product and the team will suffer some rebuke from the Steve Kelleys of the world, but as a local kid he's likely to refuse offers from other teams should they come and give reporters in the know the wink and nod that says "I'll be back."

That would leave Seattle paper thin at safety. It would have its starters and an overstressed Babineaux. It would also have Jamar Adams and Courtney Greene on the practice squad. With Wallace hanging around, there's a shadow depth that makes this move tenable.

The Seahawks would then take their defensive line depth into the regular season and let time simplify their decision making. Depth will be reduced by injuries. Other teams will suffer injuries and become more open to trades. Players like Nick Reed and Michael Bennett that dominated the preseason could be exposed against regular season competition. That might facilitate a move to the practice squad. When Marcus Trufant returns, Babineaux can move back to primary safety depth and Kelly Jennings to dimeback. It is better for Seattle to retain its best talent and risk losing Wallace than to cut a defensive lineman just because it has too many.

This plan still has its hitches. Dropping Wallace will be unpopular and weaken what last season was a weak coverage unit. Should Russell or Grant be injured, especially a routine injury that will only keep them from a few games, Seattle then must cut someone. And without the luxury of time or flexibility. The Seahawks corners are weak and thin. Wilson is a better nickel corner, Ken Lucas a solid but not foundational starting cornerback and Kelly Jennings is anything from steady but unimpressive to an abject liability. Babineaux is a safety. The best move might be the most active. Seattle could turn its depth into a regular, a regular at a position of need like offensive line and cornerback.

Winners, Losers and Projecting
the Final 53 Man Roster

Winners

Dan Quinn: A great position coach finds hidden talent. It's perhaps the single greatest impact a position coach can have. In one draft, Quinn has found, coached up and scheme matched Nick Reed, Michael Bennett and Derek Walker. Quinn deserves some credit for Cory Redding too. Classes like this put position coaches in line for defensive coordinator positions--and head coaching positions.

Losers

Secondary: The front seven looked terrific throughout the game, but the secondary was sloppy, slow and not opportunistic. Seattle might lean on Jordan Babineaux to play two positions and keep seven defensive backs.

Courtney Taylor: Not sure he's cut, but it's very possible. I'd love to credit him for his sweet RAC on the Morrah moving pick, but we can't be sure he would have been open if not for the penalty. If he is cut, I expect him to make another team. Some receivers coach will see his athleticism and desire and give the kid a call.

Curt Menefee: It takes a special kind of genius to make sideline interviews more awkward and irritating, but Curt Menefee is that genius. Instead of sticking to pleasantries and platitudes, Menefee put on his reporter cap and got controversial. Asking Deon Butler about the poor quarterback play at Penn State or Darryl Tapp about how he feels about not starting does not inspire honest, insightful answers. It causes an athlete to bristle and be more guarded.

With much of training camp accounted for, it's time we turn our attention to the preseason. The preseason is as rich as the knowledge of the fan watching it. The first thing to watch is who starts and how long they start. Below is a projection. One-series does not mean literally one series, but only a reasonable minimum depending on the coach's preferences. I know that Mike Holmgren would sometimes pull vulnerable players if the team wasn't playing well. Other coaches might play them more.

One-series Starters

Matt Hasselbeck: Seattle wants Hasselbeck to orchestrate the offense in a game situation and then retire to Dick Cheney's private bomb shelter.
Chris Spencer: Seattle needs Spencer to get game experience in its new system, but however minor his ankle injury, expect him to be protected.
Deion Branch: Too valuable and too injury prone to risk too many snaps.
Patrick Kerney: Seattle might not start him at all, but I think it will risk a series to get him game action.
Lofa Tatupu: If training camp is any indication, Tatupu isn't just the quarterback of the defense, he's getting quarterback treatment, too.

Most of the starters will play for most of or all of the first half. There's not a lot to say about some, but a few involve interesting angles.

Aaron Curry: Curry should start and play through the half at strongside linebacker.
Kelly Jennings: Marcus Trufant's injury has been the best thing to happen to Jennings professionally since lucking onto the most talented secondary in Hurricanes' history. Jennings is frustrating, but the team is committed to Josh Wilson at nickelback and doesn't see Kevin Hobbs as a starter. So Jennings is primary depth at starting cornerback. He's still going to need to show something to stick.
Cory Redding: Redding is returning from what murmurs suggest is a very serious knee injury. He hasn't looked or been especially limited, and so a strong showing throughout the preseason could help put doubts behind him.
Owen Schmitt: If he starts. Quietly, Justin Griffith has reasserted himself. Or, maybe, Schmitt just hasn't gotten up to speed as quickly as Knapp would like.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh: Housh doesn't seem the type you protect, but he's very expensive and may not need the snaps.
Nate Burleson: Coming off injury, Seattle might err on the side of caution.
T.J. Duckett and Julius Jones: Should play through the first half, but how many snaps each player receives and in what situations should be interesting.

The second half is the more provocative. It's when players play for their jobs and draft fans see the guys they've read so much about. It's also a telling indication of a player's position on the depth chart. Watch for these players and positions in the second half.

Quarterback: Seneca Wallace will get most of the snaps, but see if Mike Teel or Jeff Rowe get a series. It would be nice to see Teel even if he struggles.
Strong safety: The team could just play C.J. Wallace and not shake things up, but with Courtney Greene practicing well and Jamar Adams being the best talent and entering his second season with the team, both deserve some snaps to show off their ability.
Kevin Hobbs: Kid might want to share his talents with the rest of us, because I've read his name for so long without actually seeing him, I wouldn't be surprised if he had eyestalks and tentacles.
Justin Forsett: Short story: Had a good game once. Was cut. Might have a good game again.
Max Unger: Unger has been quiet at practice, but it's in the game where his skills should show.
Red Bryant: It's time Bryant stops toying around with second-stringers and dominates.
Will Herring: Herring is moving up the pecking order. He offers a skill-set unlike any of Seattle's other linebackers. I am curious not just how much Herring is used, but how Herring is used.
Kyle Williams: Capable depth or liability yet to be actualized?
Right tackle: Ray Willis might be in for only a series at right tackle, and that means someone is going to get a lot of snaps in his place. Actually, two players are likely to play extensively. Watch Andre Ramsey and Na'Shan Goddard and have a list of available free agents handy.
Travis Fisher: Where he plays, how much he plays and how well he plays interest me. I want Seattle to retain this guy, but he's currently on the outside looking in.
Wide receiver second wave: This is what everyone else will be talking about. And, heck, it will make for an interesting and hotly contested battle.

The final list is players that I am interested in seeing if they play at all. This is the fringe.

*Fun fact. No one is quite sure if it's Tereshinski or Tereshinksi.

Before I head out to this afternoon's practice, here's a massive notes dump from yesterday's practice.

Seattle ran a lot of draw plays. I think this was both to practice the play on offense and to see how its attacking defense responded. The offense won.
Kent was one of the receiving stars, grabbing some nice catches. He was never well covered. I noticed first though that he still looks very deliberate in basic receiving drills. One might say he's farther along at actual receiving than training to be a receiver.
The Seahawks defensive linemen weaved between and swam ballasted heavy-bags during a pass rush drill. It began as a bit of a tame drill, but Craig Terrill set the tone with a hearty weaving, slapping and grunting display that fired everyone up. Cory Redding and Colin Cole put their body into their hits and the bags went down with a thud, but quickly righted themselves. Then came a man named Red. Bryant didn't look like he was working much at all, but damn when that bag went down you'd swear it miraculously evolved a survival instinct, because it stayed down. It stayed down for a spooky long time. Bryant is hard to ignore wherever he is. He clogs and holds ground laterally as well as any Seahawks tackle since Marcus Tubbs. Redding is long and thick, Cole is barrel-chested and stout, and Bryant is long, almost rangy and smooth muscled like a player still coming into his own.
Nick Reed is a skilled player and does stand out. He stands out for his skill, quickness and contributions, but he also stands out for his size. He's legitimately small for a professional football player. He's not short and oil-can shaped like Darryl Tapp, he's small framed and, well, just small looking. The transition to linebacker might be a necessity.
A major conversation on the far side of the field was the Montana Testicle Festival. Apparently, it involves hairy naked women eating fried bison testicles. You Seahawks fans, you.
Seattle ran a stretch right that looked well executed.
Jamar Adams caught a gimme interception, but did not impress. Logan Payne feasted on him. Payne is a great practice player and I see why he excites, but, y'know, it's practice.
From the guys you may have never heard of department: Kevin Brown continues to dignify his spot on the roster and, don't look now, but NFL Combine invite defensive end Derek Walker was very active and looked pro-ready and capable. Walker is good deep depth for Redding.
Nate Burleson might look better because Nate Burleson is no longer Seatte's only deep play threat. He ran a nice three step curl that evidenced he has untapped ability on short routes. Despite great progress after tearing his ACL, his lateral cuts still looked a little stiffer than normal.
Baraka Atkins is coming along, but still looks a little too slim.
Lawrence Jackson showed a lot of fight and came to facemasks with, I think, Sean Locklear. He also displayed a good inside move, a move he needs to master to complement his good quickness to the edge. My displeasure with Jackson extends from my firm belief that he is the athletic equal of almost any defensive end and just needs to commit himself to his craft. You won't find a player I'd rather be wrong about, because I was ecstatic when he was drafted.

Michael Bennett and Lance Laury are drifting dangerously close to the bubble. I am not sure the team knows where to use them or is invested in finding out.

I think their will be early growing pains for Mebane at under tackle. I hope those growing pains don't extend to out-of-position underperformance.

It's interesting to see the guys that are sore, the guys walking a bit slowly, the guys that are winded, and the guys that appear almost indefatigable. Wilson was locked in, limber (nearly doing side-splits during stretches) and high-motor on every play I saw him.

Deon Butler is indeed small.

I mentioned the drills the team runs as de facto breathers. The special teams drills involving Olindo Mare and Brandon Coutu running back "kicks" qualifies.

Watching Kelly Jennings cover, I began thinking of the fly on the wall. The intimate but absent observer. It's a shame, because Jennings' man cover abilities are sensational. He just doesn't show much for ball skills. He bounced off Aaron Curry. Like, bounced. Later he caught a stumbling, tumbling interception.

What separates Justin Forsett from the typical undersized rusher is his ability and willingness to run inside. Teammates often looked a little concerned after he was tackled, but Force never looked worse for wear. He showed good hands and improved redirect on runs after catch. Forsett is going to play a big part in this year's team. It underlines just how foolish it was to let him go last season.

John Owens can catch, but make no mistake. John Owens is a third tackle. He is huge and looks very powerful.

Darryl Tapp is just too good to waste.

T.J. Duckett might be Seattle's best pure rusher. He meshes with this system and has underrated feet. He excels at timing his approach to the hole and redirects efficiently. Then: Boom! 250 lbs of muscle sprinting in an instant. His rushing is consistently effective at gaining yards, he's legitimately fast and on a touchdown scoring run to end practice, he made a nice downfield move to lose a defender.
