Florham Park, NJ (Sports Network) - New York Jets safety Jim Leonhard sustained a broken right thumb during a 24-22 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday.
Leonhard injured the thumb in the first quarter on Sunday. He went to the locker room to have a cast placed on his thumb before returning to the contest.
The 5-foot-8, 186-pound Wisconsin product will have surgery Monday to repair the broken thumb. It is unknown how long Leonhard will be out, or if he will miss any time at all.
"Surgery, that doesn't sound good to me," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said. "But this kid's a tough kid. If it's up to Jim, he'll be out there."
The fifth-year pro has 43 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, and an interception in nine games for the 4-5 Jets this season.
