Boston Sports TV Schedule, Nov. 29: Saints and Falcons highlight the night's action

A busy night of sports action, highlighted by an NFC South showdown give sports fans plenty of choices on television on Thursday night.

National Football League

New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons - 8:20 p.m. (NFL Network, 93.7 FM): The Saints appeared to be getting back into playoff contention before a loss to the San Francisco 49ers stopped the Saints' three-game winning streak. The Saints have dominated the series recently against the Falcons, winning 11 of their last 13 games against them, including a 31-27 win in Week 9.

National Basketball Association

San Antonio Spurs vs. Miami Heat - 8 p.m. (TNT): The Heat have a four game winning streak while the Spurs have won five in a row to take the lead in their respective divisions. The Heat also have won their first six games at home this season.

Denver Nuggets vs. Golden State Warriors - 10:30 p.m. (TNT): The third matchup between these Western Conference foes this season. The Nuggets have won both earlier games this season, 107-101 in double overtime on Nov. 10 and 102-91 on Nov. 23.

College Football

Louisville Cardinals vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights - 7:30 p.m. (ESPN): The Big East's BCS bid is on the line. A win by Rutgers would give them the Big East title outright, but a win by Louisville leaves a three-way tie for the conference lead along with the Syracuse Orange.

College Basketball

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish - 7 p.m. (ESPN2)

South Carolina Gamecocks vs. St. John's Red Storm - 7:30 p.m. (ESPNU)

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Florida Gators - 9 p.m. (ESPN2)

Seton Hall Pirates vs. LSU Tigers - 9:30 p.m. (ESPNU)

Major League Baseball

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants - 8:07 p.m. (TV/Radio: FOX/850 AM): The Cardinals will try to avoid blowing a 3-1 series lead in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series. Kyle Lohse will get the ball for Mike Matheny's club against the Giants ace, Matt Cain. Both won 16 games during the regular season.

National Football League

Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears - 8:30 p.m. (TV/Radio: ESPN/93.7 FM): The Bears are seeking to climb the NFC North ladder with a win on Monday night at Soldier Field. Chicago has been terrific this year, sporting a 4-1 mark. Detroit, on the other hand, is 2-3 but is coming off a dramatic 26-23 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets - 4:25 p.m. (TV/Radio: CBS/WBZ-FM 98.5): In a meeting between two teams in the gridlocked NFC East, 3-3 New England or 3-3 New York could earn a spot atop the division with a victory. Currently, Tom Brady and the Patriots boast the top offense in the NFL, but have struggled in close games on the road this season. This game, being in New England, could tilt the division lead in the Patriots' favor.

NBA

Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers - 7:30 p.m. (TV/Radio: CSN/WEEI 93.7): In an exhibition match, the Celtics look to build off of their preseason win against the Brooklyn Nets with a rematch of last season's second round playoff matchup.

Outside of Boston

Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans - 1:00 p.m. (TV: CBS) - Two of the top teams in the NFL face off this afternoon in Houston.

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants - 8:00 p.m. (TV: TBS) - Game 6 of the National League Championship Series in San Francisco with the Cardinals holding a 3-2 advantage over the Giants.

Dallas Cowboys at Baltimore Ravens - 1 p.m. (TV: FOX): The Ravens (4-1) host the Cowboys (2-2) at M&T Bank Stadium.

New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers - 4:25 p.m. (TV: FOX): A rematch of last year's NFC Championship Game features the 3-2 Giants visiting the 49ers (4-1).

Major League Baseball

Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees - 4 p.m. (TV/Radio: TBS/850 AM): Tigers own a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven American League Championship Series. Detroit will send Anibal Sanchez to the mound to oppose New York's Hiroki Kuroda.

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants - 8 p.m. (TV/Radio: FOX/850 AM): Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. Madison Bumgarner will throw for the Giants while Lance Lynn starts for the visiting Cardinals.

National Basketball Association

Women's National Basketball Association

Indiana Fever at Minnesota Lynx - 8 p.m. (TV: ESPN2): Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.

Boston's sports teams are off Columbus Day, but there's still things to be watched in the world of sports, including a matchup with implications for New England's squads as well as some MLB playoffs action.

NFL, Monday Night Football, New York Jets vs. Houston Texans, ESPN, 8 p.m.: The 3-2 New England Patriots sit on top of the AFC East standings, but that status is pending the result of this game. The Jets would pull into a tie with a win, although that would be a massive upset against a team that's 4-0 with four more-than-convincing wins. Pats fans will probably want to tune in solely for schadenfreude purposes, as the Jets looked dismal last week against the San Francisco 49ers and won't be likely to do much better against a team many think is the league's best squad.

MLB, NLDS Game 2, Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals, TBS, 4:37 p.m.

ALDS Game 2, New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles, TBS, 8:07 p.m.

Boston sports TV schedule, Oct. 4: Thursday night is football night

Now that the Boston Red Sox's season is over, there are no local teams on television on Thursday night. The night belongs to both the NFL and college football with a pair of nationally televised games. For information on whats on television on Thursday night, read after the jump. All times are Eastern.

NFL

Arizona Cardinals vs. St. Louis Rams, 8 p.m., NFL Network

The most surprising undefeated team in the NFL gets center stage on Thursday night as the Cardinals travel to Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis to play the Rams. Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb has thrown seven touchdown passes this season while completing almost 63 percent of his passes.

The Rams hope quarterback Sam Bradford and running back Steven Jackson can lead the Rams to an upset victory over their NFC West rivals.

NCAA Football

USC Trojans vs. Utah Utes, 9 p.m., ESPN

The Trojans make their first visit to Salt Lake City in 95 years on Thursday night, playing the upset-minded Utes. The Trojans hope that they can continue their strong play after defeating the California Golden Bears last weekend, 27-9. The Utes are coming off of a bye week after a 37-7 loss to the Arizona St. Sun Devils on Sept. 22.

NFC West Update: Cardinals On Top After Week 3, Pigs Remarkably Not Flying

So, by a show of hands, who had the Arizona Cardinals sitting atop the NFC West alone after the first three weeks of play?

If any of you are bold enough to claim that you did, I'm bold enough to claim that your full of it.

But with Arizona's (3-0) public spanking of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings' jaw-dropping upset over the San Francisco 49ers (2-1), the Cardinals are now the kings of the NFC west castle.

And if you look at their upcoming schedule, it could remain that way for a while.

The Cardinals' next four games are as follows: Miami at home, St. Louis on the road, Buffalo at home and Minnesota on the road.

I'm not saying any of these games are exactly slam dunks with the parity the NFL has showcased this year. But when you consider the caliber of opponents the Cardinals have defeated the last two games, I think it will be marginally shocking if they weren't resting at 7-0 come Week 8.

Following the conclusion of Week 8, Cardinals fans will have a much better grasp on Arizona's true chances to win the division with the Niners rolling into town. Win or lose though, it will be interesting to see how Arizona reacts with their defense getting arguably their two stiffest challenges of 2012 directly after (Green Bay and Atlanta on the road).

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Back in this time that we call the present, we finally know that the 49ers are in fact human. And with that revelation, it's looking more and more like this division is no longer a given.

Kevin Kolb Turns In Best Performance As An Arizona Cardinal Sunday Against Eagles

One number has defined much of Kevin Kolb's career in Arizona: $65 million. Yet in Sunday's 27-6 slaughtering of the Philadelphia Eagles, Kolb had a far more minuscule numeral protruding from the box score: zero, as in zero interceptions for the third straight game.

Yes, I realize that's not the most sexy of statistics. But when you have an elite defense like the Arizona Cardinals are currently fielding, there is no number more important.

Before we start assigning labels though, let's refrain from calling Kolb (17-of-24, 222 yards and two touchdowns) a game manager. Kolb wasn't going out there and trying not to lose Sunday; he was doing everything that the coaches were asking from him. And then some.

In the beginning when the game was still competitive, Kolb was accurate and decisive, putting the ball where only his teammates could make a play while orchestrating a handful of gradually effective drives. And that all occurred without the assistance of any sort of ground game as Arizona ball-carriers combined for just 32 yards on 13 attempts in the Cardinals 24-0 first half.

Sure, you could complain that Kolb didn't step on the Eagles throat and build on the lead like a quarterback such as Tom Brady or Matt Ryan would. But that's not how the Cardinals play football and nor should they start.

See, when it comes to expectations for Kolb, this should be the limit. If they start asking him to go out there and win shootouts, fans are going to be treated some disastrous results behind this faulty offensive line. As long as he can continue to get the ball out quickly while putting the ball in the hands of his playmakers (cough, cough Larry Fitzgerald), then the Cardinals will continue with this winning formula.

More than anything though, it was incredibly rewarding to see Kolb and company finally taking advantage of the favorable positions that the defense and special teams units put them in so often. If Kolb can keep this confident composure and maintain a potent attack operating essentially from three-step drops, then there's no reason to think that this team can't continue to hang with the NFL's finest.

And that's a statement we will just file under the "things you never thought would be written about Kevin Kolb following the 2011" department.

Great 1st Career Catch For Rookie WR Michael Floyd And Failed Celebration

Through the first two weeks of the 2012 season, Arizona Cardinals fans have been waiting for rookie wide receiver Michael Floyd to make a play. He had seen the field very little and had yet to even make a catch.

Against the Philadelphia Eagles he not only picked up his first catch, it was for a touchdown.

At the eight-yard line, Kevin Kolb threw a ball into traffic that Trent Cole got his hand on. The ball was in the air for a split second, but Floyd stayed with it. He grabbed the ball and found no one behind him. Touchdown Cardinals!

What happened after that was a celebration with some embarrassment.

He went for the goalpost dunk and stuck it, but then ended up on his butt.

So...great concentration, great way to have your first catch, bad form on the landing.

Cardinals Vs. Eagles: What The Cardinals Must Do To Secure A Victory

The Arizona Cardinals look to start their season with a 3-0 record, the first time they would have done so since moving to Arizona from St. Louis. While defeating the Patriots was a quality victory for the underdog Red Birds, the Eagles will be no walk in the park.

Philadelphia is also 2-0 and they sport one of the best pass rushes in the NFL, along with a dynamic offense led by an enigma for a quarterback in Michael Vick. So far this season, Vick has struggled, turning the ball over six times by himself. But with the talent he has, he could break out at any given time. Stopping him will be just one of the few things the Cardinals need to do in order to win this afternoon.

On top of containing Vick, the Cards must also keep his running back, LeSean McCoy, from hurting them too badly. McCoy is one of the premiere rushers in the NFL and can hurt both on the ground and as a receiver out of the backfield on screen passes, swing routes, etc. The guy does it all. Stopping those two is impossible. The Cardinals can only hope to limit the damage with their stellar defense.

Speaking of stellar defenses, the Eagles have a pretty good one themselves. Their 4-3 front gets to the opposing quarterback with ease. Jason Babin and Trent Cole are top of the line edge rushers and up the middle, they have great talent in Cullen Jenkins and Fletcher Cox. The Cardinals' shaky offensive line will have their work cut out for them, but will need to limit the pressure on Kevin Kolb in order to be successful.

Getting Larry Fitzgerald more involved in this game should be atop the Cardinals' to-do list. Last weekend, Fitzgerald only managed to snag one catch for a total of four yards, the lowest since his rookie season. Arizona needs to feed him the ball, despite the talent that Nnamdi Asomugha, the guy who will be covering Fitzgerald, has.

I feel that if the Cardinals are unable to run the ball themselves, they are not going to win this game. Ryan Williams and Beanie Wells have been unimpressive thus far. The offensive line needs to get some push to allow these two players to be more successful. With the Eagles being one of the worst run defending teams in the league last season, there is no reason why the Cardinals could not exploit that again.

If the Cardinals can manage to do all of this, they can walk out of University of Phoenix Stadium with their heads held high and a new franchise record to be proud of.
