National Football League

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets - 8:20 p.m. (TV/Radio: NBC/98.5 FM): A Thanksgiving full of NFL action will be capped off with a battle between AFC East rivals. The Patriots have taken a three-game lead in the division thanks to a four-game winning streak, which started with a 29-26 victory over the Jets on Oct. 21. In order to extend that streak to five, the Patriots will need to get past the Jets without the services of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who suffered a broken forearm in last week's blowout win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Houston Texans vs. Detroit Lions - 12:30 p.m. (TV: CBS): The AFC's best team takes on one of the league's most disappointing clubs to open the Thanksgiving NFL slate. Two of the league's top six offenses will be featured in the game. The 4-6 Lions hope to put an end to an eight-game Turkey Day losing streak, but it won't be an easy task against the 9-1 Texans.

Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys - 4:25 p.m. (TV: FOX): Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III returns to his home state for the first time since finishing his college career at Baylor. Griffin and the 'Skins face a Cowboys team that can move into a tie for first place in the NFC East with a win paired with a New York Giants loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

College Football

TCU Horned Frogs vs. No. 16 Texas Longhorns - 7:30 p.m. (TV: ESPN).

NFL

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets - 4:25 p.m. (TV/Radio: CBS/WBZ-FM 98.5): In a meeting between two teams in the gridlocked NFC East, 3-3 New England or 3-3 New York could earn a spot atop the division with a victory. Currently, Tom Brady and the Patriots boast the top offense in the NFL, but have struggled in close games on the road this season. This game, being in New England, could tilt the division lead in the Patriots' favor.

NBA

Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers - 7:30 p.m. (TV/Radio: CSN/WEEI 93.7): In an exhibition match, the Celtics look to build off of their preseason win against the Brooklyn Nets with a rematch of last season's second round playoff matchup.

Outside of Boston

Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans - 1:00 p.m. (TV: CBS) - Two of the top teams in the NFL face off this afternoon in Houston.

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants - 8:00 p.m. (TV: TBS) - Game 6 of the National League Championship Series in San Francisco with the Cardinals holding a 3-2 advantage over the Giants.

Boston's sports teams are off Columbus Day, but there's still things to be watched in the world of sports, including a matchup with implications for New England's squads as well as some MLB playoffs action.

NFL, Monday Night Football, New York Jets vs. Houston Texans, ESPN, 8 p.m.: The 3-2 New England Patriots sit on top of the AFC East standings, but that status is pending the result of this game. The Jets would pull into a tie with a win, although that would be a massive upset against a team that's 4-0 with four more-than-convincing wins. Pats fans will probably want to tune in solely for schadenfreude purposes, as the Jets looked dismal last week against the San Francisco 49ers and won't be likely to do much better against a team many think is the league's best squad.

MLB, NLDS Game 2, Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals, TBS, 4:37 p.m.

ALDS Game 2, New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles, TBS, 8:07 p.m.

What Is Mark Sanchez Trying To Tell Tim Tebow?

Things are just not going well for the New York Jets and their two-headed quarterback situation ... surprise! There was the failed wildcat that got Tim Tebow tackled for a loss. Then, on the very next play, Mark Sanchez throws an interception. But this one, this one really takes the cake ...

Sanchez thew the ball to Tebow and ... *DOINK* ... it hits him in the head.

The Jets' starter, Sanchez, has two picks. Tebow has two carries for a net gain of zero yards, and how he has this to think about.

New York could be nearing the point where they come apart at the seams. Darrelle Revis, the league's best cornerback, left the game with a knee injury. A fourth-quarter touchdown by Miami gave the Dolphins a lead in the AFC East showdown.

Sports On TV, 09/23: Jets, Yankees, Mets All On In Afternoon

Though the New York Giants already had the spotlight on Thursday Night Football, it's Sunday, and that means NFL action on your TVs (whether you like it or not). Saturday saw Syracuse and Rutgers get the spotlight, but today will be highlighted by NFL action between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. Of course, there's also the national game, the Sunday Night Football matchup between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.

Football

New York Jets Vs. Miami Dolphins, 1:00 p.m. CBS: Mark Sanchez will be looking to rebound from a game in which he only managed to complete 10 of his passes. They'll also be looking for a 2-0 record within the AFC East and a 2-1 record overall. Miami is coming off a beatdown of the Oakland Raiders and will certainly be riding some solid momentum, but rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill has now had one poor performance and one decent one.

Baseball

New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics, 1:05 p.m. TBS: If football isn't your thing, you can watch the Yankees try to pick up another win after a crazy 14-inning game in their last outing. Oakland managed to belt a few home runs in extra innings and, in the usual unpredictable fashion, the Yankees tied up immediately, eventually taking the lead to seal the win.

New York Mets Vs. Miami Marlins, 1:10 p.m. WPIX: The Mets are short on quality wins this season, but some of the few they do have are against the Marlins. They're not in the playoff chase anymore, but are looking to win their third-straight at Citi Field for the first time since June.

Other

Other than MLB and the NFL, the Golf channel will carry the PGA Tour Championship for most of the morning, and pass it off to NBC at 1:30 p.m. On top of that, ESPN will be carrying the NASCAR Sprint Cup in Loudon, N.H. starting at 2:00 p.m.

Tyrone Carter, Ex-Gophers Safety, To Be Honored On Saturday

Ex-Minnesota Golden Gophers star safety Tyrone Carter was inducted into the school's M Club Hall of Fame this week, and on Saturday night he'll be honored during Minnesota's game vs. the Syracuse Orange. Carter was one of nine Gopher athletes to be inducted in 2012, and one of two football players along with offensive lineman John Williams, who lettered at Minnesota in the late-1960s.

Carter won the Jim Thorpe Award in 1999 and was an All-American in 1998 and 1999. He was a fourth round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, where he played three seasons before a one-year stopover with the New York Jets. From there he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-2009, where he was a part of two Super Bowl winning teams. He last played in the NFL in 2010, when he appeared in seven games for the San Diego Chargers.

Johnathan Joseph Is No. 3 Most Overpaid NFL Player, According To Forbes List

This Forbes list acknowledges that Houston Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph had a terrific 2011 season in his first with the team, but it also notes that he's only played a full 16-game season once since being drafted in 2006, and last season the lone All-Pro selection of his career.

Apparently Forbes expects more from a cornerback making $9.75 million. That's why they named Joseph as the third most overpaid player in the NFL behind Jets linebacker David Harris ($12 million) and Dolphins linebacker Karlos Dansby ($10.7 million).

Perhaps the makers of this list are more objective than I am, because I distinctively remember the Texans' cornerbacks in 2010 being Glover Quin and a rookie Kareem Jackson.

It wasn't pretty.

The defensive turnaround for Houston last season had a lot more factors than just Joseph. There was Wade Phillips implementing his 3-4 system. The team transitioned from Mario Williams being their primary pass rusher, to J.J. Watt becoming the new budding star.

There's the emergence of Shaun Cody, Brooks Reed and Brian Cushing as a true leader on the defense. You have a lot of pieces to this puzzle.

But Joseph is still the premier defensive back on what is arguably the league's best defensive unit behind the San Francisco 49ers. Overpaid or not, that counts for something.

Rex Ryan, Media Keep Playing The Tebowmania Game

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan says "the media is not going to drive" how much Tim Tebow plays. The media will, however, continue to drive the 'Tebowmania' train, and will continue to ask Ryan how much he plans to use Tebow, who might be the most interesting backup quarterback in NFL history.

What will Tebow's role be? How many snaps do you expect Tebow to play? How much will you use the 'Wildcat' offense? Can Tebow and starting quarterback Mark Sanchez co-exist?

Ryan has been asked some variety of these questions almost every day since the Jets imported Tebowmania from the Denver Broncos. He admitted Wednesday that he is never going to give a straight answer to the 'how much will Tebow play?' question.

"The media is not going to drive it. The opponent, they're not going to have any idea what we're going to do with them and I'm certainly not going to let them know, ‘By the way, Tebow is going to have 50 snaps today.' Let (them prepare). I'm never going to give a legitimate answer. I think I know the answer, but I'm not going to give it to them," Ryan said. "I think it plays into our best interests that our opponents don't know how many (Wildcat plays we are going to run). Is it going to be a big feature? Is the Wildcat going to be very featured this week or is it going to be more back-burnered. I think that plays into our advantage."

Ryan may or may not be trying to kill Tebowmania. Don't expect this little cat-and-mouse game with the media to disappear anytime soon. This is what the Jets signed up for, whether they fully understood it or not.

When Tebow plays a lot there will be questions about whether or not he will take Mark Sanchez' job, or how Sanchez is handling it. When Tebow doesn't play much, like last Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers when he got only three offensive snaps, Ryan will be asked why. Each week he will likely be asked what the Tebow Plan for the upcoming game is.

Each week Ryan will give some variety of the answer he gave Wednesday about the Tebow Plan for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins.

"I'm not really sure (if Tebow will play more). There could be more opportunities down the road. There could be less, but that's it. I'm happy he's here. I can tell you that much," ryan said. "As we've said from day one, this guy is a good football player. We're not going to say he has to get "x" amount of snaps. That's not what we do. Just like with Joe McKnight (who) only had the one snap, will he play a bigger role this week? Probably, but again, things go into it, matchups are a consideration (and) a lot of different things go into things."

Translation: Ryan is telling the media they can go ahead and keep asking -- and he might even enjoy the fact that the question is always there -- but he is going to continue to answer by not really answering.

That is how the Tebowmania Game is is apparently played.

New York Jets' David Harris, Santonio Holmes Make Forbes List Of Overpaid NFL Players

Forbes has a list of the most overpaid NFL players -- which is interesting because NFL players are so often underpaid -- but a few New York Jets are on the list. Even considering the fact that Jets linebacker David Harris led the team in tackles last season and was second in sacks, he still isn't considered one of the elite linebackers in the game. Or at least not through the general discussion.

He is, however, the league's highest paid at the position with $12 million in salary and bonuses. With all due respect to Harris, that sounds like a little much, and definitely enough to put him on top of the Forbes list.

Santonio Holmes is No. 5 on the list with his $9.25 million salary this season. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie is mentioned as well.
