The St. Louis Rams officially broke for the offseason after last week's OTAs. However, the rookies stayed around for another week of orientation. That included the chance to be a part of a pioneering new stage in the team's community involvement: the opening of the St. Louis Rams Training Academy in Chesterfield, Mo.

The 20,000 square foot facility opened Monday. Decked out with state of the art training equipment, video capability, weights and, of course, a turf field, the building is the first of its kind in the NFL. The purpose of the Training Academy is to educate and enrich area youth, teaching them how to play football the Rams way ... the current way, not the 2005 - 2011 way.

"The Rams Training Academy represents our deep organizational commitment to youth fitness and character development," Brian Killingsworth, VP of marketing, said in a press release.

"We are proud to be the first NFL team to establish a premier facility like this, but just as important to us is our ability to introduce off-the-field educational components. The Rams Training Academy philosophy aligns perfectly with our organizational philosophy of building winners on and off the field."

The place is open all year long. The action started Monday with the team's rookies working with local kids. A three-week football camp gets underway next month, followed by a host of other events with community organizations.

Kids can also have Rams-themed birthday parties there. And in a really neat twist, Chris Long comes bursts out of the cake and sacks whatever kid is celebrating that day. (The last part might not be true, but would be a pretty cool birthday surprise, no?)

Overseeing the academy, contributing to its curriculum and making regular appearances is the Leadership Board. Members include head coach Jeff Fisher and Kara Henderson Snead. A long list of the team's past greats is also on the board, including Jack Youngblood, Marhsall Faulk, Isaac Bruce and Orlando Pace. Wrestler John Cena is also on the board.

You can see some photos and videos of the place below. It looks pretty impressive even from the limited view you get through social media windows.

This is the team's latest effort at community engagement, something that's really been an emphasis over the last three years. Like the outreach with nonprofits or contributing to the rebuilding efforts in Joplin, Mo., these are the kinds of efforts that deepen the connections with the host community and the fans who support the team.

St. Louis Rams: Five “Can” Questions To Ponder This Offseason

Having finished the OTA’s last week, the Rams are now off for the summer; leaving us in limbo until late July when the team re-unites for training camp. Knowing what we know now, here are five questions you should ask yourself as we crawl towards the 2013 regular season...

1. Can The Rams' Defense Lead The NFL In Sacks [Again]?

The Rams’ defense tied [w/ Denver Broncos] for the NFL lead in sacks last season, with 52. It was a vast improvement from 2011, when the Rams finished 15th in the league, tallying 39.

The defense continues to be the team’s strong suit, despite having only three starters [Chris Long, Robert Quinn, & James Laurinaitis] who have been on the team for more than one season. The front four set the tone for the Rams, and there’s little reason to believe the defensive line won’t continue to improve in 2013; growing familiarity with the system and with one another. Adjusting to the NFL proved to be relatively simple for Michael Brockers in his rookie year. Kendall Langford - who the Rams acquired from the Dolphins last season - should be much improved in his 2nd consecutive year in the Rams 4-3 defense.

But if the Rams are to own the league-lead in sacks, it will come as a result of stellar seasons from their bookends: Chris Long and Robert Quinn. Long tied for 9th in the league last year - with 11.5 sacks - while his counterpart finished 17th, only one full sack behind.

Jeff Fisher has challenged his defense to beat the 1984 Chicago Bears’ sack record [72]. That’s certainly a tall order for any team. Regardless of whether or not they’re able to break the record, can the Rams lead the NFL in sacks by season’s end?

2. Can Sam Bradford Throw For 4,000 Yards?

This is the year for Sam Bradford, right? It’s be deemed - by many - as a ‘make or break’ season, so it’s got to be, right? Not really. Everyone’s got their take on Bradford, his importance to the offense, and his expectations for 2013. He’ll certainly be the most important player in the Rams' offense this year, as his leadership [post Steven Jackson] is needed more than ever.

One of those expectations is that he eclipse 4,000 yards for the first time in his young career. Would the rest of the players, coaches, and fans trade a 4,000+ yard season for a 10 or 11 win year? Sure. But as his #1 overall draft selection - coupled with his college resumé and reputation - would have it, he’s been expected to provide those results from day one. Take a look at what he’s had to work with through his first three years. Yeah...

But this year Sam has been provided with weapons, and therefore the expectation fire rages on. The real question should be: How do you couple expectations with uncertainty? Sure, he’s been provided with a slew of offensive threats in the offseason. Jared Cook, Tavon Austin, & Stedman Bailey are promising, but reliable? That’s still to be seen. Outside of that, the Rams’ signal caller will look to ‘veteran’ Austin Pettis, and 2nd year guys Brian Quick and Chris Givens. Givens had an exceptional rookie year, and looks to build on being the Rams’ leading receiver for the second consecutive season. Quick, though, has much work to do. As Jim Thomas points out, Quick might not be as far along as one would hope, noting that he’s the No. 4 WR after the OTA’s.

Bradford should be poised for the best year of his NFL career. Or so it would seem. As every team sport would have it, his success hinges upon that of others. Is an oft-injured offensive line going to hold up? Are the young receivers going to be on the same page? The Rams don’t have a cakewalk schedule this year. Is Sam Bradford going to eclipse the 4,000 yard mark in 2013?

3. Can Brian Quick Be Who The Rams Need Him To Be?

As aforementioned, Brian Quick - the team’s 2nd draft selection [33rd overall] from 2012 - doesn’t seem to be standing out in the early portion of the offseason. More so, he’s being out-shined. Should Rams fans be concerned? Maybe. And though potentially premature, the "adjustment from a small school to the NFL" line of rationale crumbles with every snap he’s on the sideline. Needing to improve on his rookie season would be an understatement.

Quick showed promise at the end of last season, displaying the size and sure hands that any NFL red zone threat requires. That great snag aside, the [essentially] first round selection caught only 10 more balls in the entirety of 2012, finishing the season with 156 yards and one other TD.

There are many that think that Brian Quick needs to step it up in 2013, including myself. He’s the biggest wideout on the Rams’ roster, and he should be considered the biggest threat to the opposition.

Will Brian Quick step it up in 2013, or is he going to be overshadowed by rookies, and outplayed by Austin Pettis? [Kudos to Austin Pettis, by the way]

4. Can Tavon Austin Win The Offensive Rookie Of The Year Award?

He was the most exciting player in all of college football last year. If you don’t believe it, just watch this video. He immediately makes the offense more explosive, and as a threat in the return game, Austin could help put the team in a better position to succeed.

The Rams drafted Austin 8th overall for a reason. GM Les Snead doesn’t need players… he wants them. It says a lot about what the organization thinks of him, having traded up in the first round to acquire him. Snead has a pretty solid track record for drafting legitimate playmakers in the NFL, and Tavon Austin looks to be no exception.

The 2012 draft was chock full of game-changers, but Tavon Austin stood apart in the most recent draft. He’s expected to make an immediate impact in the offense [and potentially special teams]. If he’s able to hold up for 16 games and make plays like those in the highlight video above, is there any rookie in the NFL who can challenge Tavon Austin for Offensive ROTY?

5. Can The Rams Make The Playoffs?

The million-dollar question. The Rams have now gone eight consecutive seasons without a playoff berth. They barely missed out on the postseason in 2010, when a loss in the final game of the season ended the Rams' run and afforded the Seattle Seahawks the opportunity to continue on into the playoffs.

The NFC West has come a long way since 2010, when a losing record allowed entry into the postseason. The 49ers have been one of the best teams in the NFC over the past two years, and the Seahawks aren’t far behind, if at all. Both teams have made the playoffs twice in the past three years, with the 49ers representing the NFC in the Super Bowl last season.

Given the improvement - both offensively and defensively - of the team in this offseason, the Rams are going to be a formidable opponent for teams both inside and outside the conference. Their return to legitimacy, though, comes at a time when two of their three NFC West foes are early picks for Super Bowl XLVIII.

It’s probably going to take somewhere in the ballpark of double digit wins to gain entry to the 2013-2014 playoffs, and it may take an inter-conference result like that of 2012 [4-1-1] to solidify their chances.

The Rams have the 4th toughest schedule this season. Can they overcome all obstacles and become a playoff team for the first time in nine years?

If you can answer ‘Yes’ to the first four, what impact does that have on question Number 5?

Of the thousands of sporting events I've watched all throughout my life, I have a hard time thinking of more than maybe a handful of moments where the result of a game left me feeling truly euphoric. As you might expect, I have the Pittsburgh Steelers to thank for most of my states of euphoria.

Below, I'd like to share those moments and how they helped shape me as a Steelers fan:

Steelers upset the Broncos, 24-17, in Divisional Playoff Game at Mile High Stadium on December 30th, 1984

Many consider the loss to Miami in the 1984 AFC Championship Game to be the last stand for the great Steelers teams of the 70's, and maybe in the context of the times, it probably felt like a continuation of the Super Bowl teams of the previous decade. But, truth be told, with the exception of John Stallworth, Mike Webster, Donnie Shell and Jack Lambert (who missed most of what would be his final season thanks to turf toe), the championship magic had long-since dissipated by '84, and this was already a mediocre football team that would struggle for respectability during the remaining years under Chuck Noll.

I started watching the Steelers in January of 1980 as a seven year old and was fortunate enough to witness them capture their fourth Lombardi trophy in six seasons with a victory over the Rams in Super Bowl XIV. Unfortunately, THAT was the final chapter of the great dynasty, as many Super Bowl heroes soon departed, and the team struggled to make the postseason in subsequent years. While older fans may have had an air of entitlement and superiority thanks to the Super 70's, I was reared on mediocre records, mediocre rosters and watching my favorite football team lose to the Bengals, Browns and Oilers on a pretty consistent basis in the early 80's.

By December of 1984, when the Steelers (9-7) traveled to Mile High Stadium to take on a 13-3 Denver team in the Divisional Playoffs, I certainly didn't "feel" like my birth-right was a Super Bowl. In fact, I didn't think there was any way Pittsburgh was going to win that game. I rooted hard, of course, but was totally stunned by the outcome. "Mark Malone defeated John Elway?" To this day, I still can't believe it.

As a 12 year old, it was my first true Steelers "moment," and it taught me to always believe in your team, and that football games aren't won on paper.

Steelers knock off Oilers in overtime in AFC Wildcard Game on December, 31st, 1989

Our very own Maryrose has stated more than once that sports teams such as the Steelers may not be necessary, but they sure are important to the people who care about them. When Pittsburgh captured the last playoff spot in the AFC following a Vikings victory over Cincinnati on Monday Night Football in the final game of the 1989 season, I was simply elated. It was Christmas night, and what a great present for Steeler Nation, especially after the 5-11 campaign in 1988 and the first two games of the '89 season, in-which Pittsburgh was blown out by the Browns and Bengals by a combined score of 92-10.

I was 17 and on Christmas break that week, and unfortunately, the elation of the Steelers making the playoffs quickly gave way to some very serious family issues that placed a dark cloud over my household for the remainder of my school vacation. However, in the midst of everything that was going on in my family, I clung to the hope of the upcoming Steelers wildcard game in Houston's old Astrodome, and that's when I first realized the great diversion a sporting event can be.

After Gary Anderson's kick sailed through the uprights from 50 yards away, and Pittsburgh knocked off Jerry Glanville and the hated Oilers in overtime, I felt nothing but pure joy. I can remember jumping out of my chair, with my arms in the air, while my late grandfather pulled out his "lucky" penny and handed it to me. All the family problems seemed to be washed away at that moment, and things started to feel "normal" again.

On a slightly less serious note, speaking strictly as a fan, that victory over Houston taught me just how precious a playoff victory is and how it can stay with you forever. Despite the hundreds of Steelers games I've watched in my lifetime, I've only personally witnessed 20 postseason victories, so as far as I'm concerned, any playoff victory is something to be cherished.

Steelers defeat the Colts, 20-16, on January 14th, 1996, to reach first Super Bowl in 16 seasons

As I touched on earlier, the Steelers were an average football team for most of my youth, and the thought of them even making the Super Bowl again seemed too far-fetched to even imagine. However, I did imagine it a lot and suffered through every postseason disappointment--including January of 1995, when Pittsburgh was upset by the Chargers in the 1994 AFC Championship Game at old Three Rivers Stadium.

A year later, when Jim Harbaugh's Hail Mary pass eluded Aaron Bailey's grasp and fell to the Three Rivers turf on the last play of the 1995 AFC Championship Game, it was a feeling and realization I had always dreamed of: "The Pittsburgh Steelers are actually going to the Super Bowl!"

Following the game, I jumped into my uncle's car and drove around the city, honking the horn at passersby--the first and only time I've ever done that.

Unlike the previous feelings of euphoria, that one stayed with me for weeks, even after the loss to the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. I know many people still feel betrayed by Neil O'Donnell for his two very unfortunate interceptions, and I realize the loss is at the top of most fans' lists of most heartbreaking moments in Pittsburgh sports history, but I don't look at it that way. Up to that point, it was the greatest time I ever had following any team, and it's something I'll always treasure. Those Bill Cowher playoff teams of the 90's represented a resurgence in Steeler Nation after many tough years, and that AFC Championship was the crowning moment and a bit of a return to the glory days of old.

Regardless of what our standards are as a fan base, the fact is, even making it to the Super Bowl is more of a rarity than maybe we'd like to acknowledge--there's a reason only two teams (the Steelers and Cowboys) are tied for the most appearances with eight. If it was really that easy, I'm sure people would figure out a way to get back there more often.

The Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions have never even been to a Super Bowl. In baseball, the Chicago Cubs, with all their rich tradition and history, haven't been to the World Series since 1945. The Toronto Maple Leafs have a pretty rabid following, but they haven't been to the Stanley Cup Finals since 1967.

Like Steelers fans, the standard for Lakers faithful is "NBA title or bust." However, I'll bet fans of the Clippers, the "other" NBA franchise located in Los Angeles, would probably give anything just to see their team make it to the NBA Finals.

I don't have feelings of disappointment when I think of the final weeks of the1995 season, only feelings of euphoria.

Steelers defeat the Seahawks, 21-10, on February 5th, 2006, to capture their first Super Bowl title in 26 seasons

I'm not sure if fans can truly pay their "dues," but I sure felt like I put up with my share of anxiety, heartache and pain during the first 25 years that I followed the Steelers. Yes, winning playoff games is always nice, and watching your team just make the Super Bowl is something to cherish for a lifetime. However, like all fans, I wondered if I'd ever experience the joy of seeing my team win it all.

It's funny how, even as a fan, you can have a "pinch me" moment. I certainly had one in the waning seconds of Super Bowl XL, when I realized the Steelers were going to defeat Seattle. Once the final whistle blew, and I watched Cowher present the Lombardi trophy to Mr. Rooney, I felt like I owned a piece of it. The next day, when I wore the championship t-shirt I bought at Parkway Center Mall, I felt like I actually accomplished something, as weird as that seems.

The theme of this piece has been euphoric moments, and believe me, the elation and euphoria I felt after Super Bowl XL is something I still carry with me to this day. Super Bowl XLIII was awesome, and in many ways, superior to Super Bowl XL, but there's nothing quite like the first time. I'll never forget how I felt in the hours, days, weeks, months and years following Super Bowl XL.

In conclusion, the great thing about euphoric sports moments is they're rare and something you truly can't experience unless your heart belongs to a particular team. My heart belongs to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I don't know when I'll experience that next feeling of euphoria, but if it's anything like the moments I described in this post, I'm positive it will be something I'll remember for the rest of my life.

Good morning Rams fans. It's Father's Day. You know that. So, take a moment to give the old man some thanks for putting up with you for all those years. Even if he's not a Rams fan, you can overlook that fact ... for one day at least.

Got good football-related story to share?

My old man wasn't really much of a football fan. But he indulged my interest in the game. A lot of that interest came via Jim Brown movies on Saturday and those old Crunch Course tapes featuring the Fearsome Foursome. It's not a complaint. The old man was a good dude all around; he just didn't like watching football games.

Then again, maybe letting me sit around all day Sunday in front of the television was just a ploy to get the yard mowed. Wait a minute ...

What are your favorite football memories with the old man? How about as a father, how do you share your love for the game with the shorties?

Who Dat History: The 1987 Season

Chapter 2

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda...DID!

Following the 24-22 loss at home to San Francisco, the Saints went to Atlanta and pile drove the Falcons 38-0 (piled drove? pile drived? damn it, Ralph, we'll be vilified by the peanut gallery if we don't get this right - did you see what happened to those test writers???), which at the time was a huge deal. Even though the Saints hadn't ever won anything they still would bring like 10,000 fans to Atlanta with them every time. In 1987, watching game footage makes it feel like 20,000.

The Saints beating anyone 38-0 would be news any year. Reuben Mayes and Dalton Hilliard combined for 175 yards rushing and the Saints defense held Atlanta to 183 yards.

Ralph, you forgot to mention that the Saints secondary recorded five, count 'em, FIVE interceptions off Falcons quarterback Scott Campbell, while Rickey Jackson and Frank Warren each sacked that bum twice. OUCH. BOX SCORE

New Orleans was starting to notice, but it wasn't until the following two weeks when everyone realized, "It's real. The Saints are actually really good and 1987 is the year."

Next up for the Saints was a rematch with the Rams in Los Angeles, and the real Saints clubbed the real Rams, 31-14 (and no one called PETA). Dalton Hilliard caught a touchdown and threw for another. Hilliard was always really good in Anaheim. Why? I have no idea he just was.

I hear you, Ralph. Know what else Dalton was always good at throughout his career? The halfback pass. His lifetime passing stats: 4 of 7 for 114 yards and 4 TDs. How fun is that?

Hans, you sure say that a LOT. The Saints were 5-3, and headed out to San Francisco looking for revenge. This game sticks with me more than any other from 1987. It didn't clinch a winning season or playoff spot like future games would but it proved the Saints could win a big game.

If you are under 30 you probably think, "How can a late October game be so important?" The Saints never had won big games because they hadn't really played in many. The 1983 season finale against the Rams was the biggest. Now they were heading to play the 7-1 49ers in a 3 p.m. kickoff, and it was a huge deal.

Almost as important as winning was how the Saints won. The Saints had been awful for 19 years and what do bad teams do? They lose in new horrible ways every week. You know that old saying, "Every happy family is the same but unhappy families are each unhappy in their own special way."

Football teams are like that. Winning teams are usually very similar but losing teams are unique in their awfulness. The Saints had tortured their fans in every way possible, but their patented specialty was blowing big leads and the fourth quarter collapse.

In 1987's second game against the 49ers, it sure felt like it was going to happen again. The Saints had scored on a Reggie Sutton blocked field goal that Johnnie Poe scooped up and ran 61 yards to the house to give New Orleans a 23-14 lead in the third quarter.

So, Saints fans began preparing themselves for the inevitable, and the 49ers came in right on cue in the fourth quarter, mounting a 10-point run to take the lead back, 24-23, on a Ray Wersching field goal and a Joe Montana to Ron Heller 29-yard touchdown pass. Same old Saints.

Except it wasn't. Bobby Hebert somehow mustered up a drive (on a day when he was 10 of 27 for 181 yards) and Morten Andersen hit the ugliest 40-yard kick you will ever see with a minute left to give the Saints a 26-24 win.

HERE's your box score, and HERE'S THE WHOLE GAME TO WATCH and get no work done (well, it's Father's Day, so treat yourself, even if you're not a father)...you're welcome.

New Orleans was now fully enthralled with Who Dat Fever. The Saints had won three straight, which at the time was tied for the longest win streak ever.

Ralph, I know I'm a bit premature with this musical interlude because the song didn't really come out until after they had clinched a winning season, but I simply cannot hold back any longer. Check out this cover of the Monkees' "I'm A Believer" remade for the Saints that year by some locals - it captures the excitement we all felt, and I have great memories of hearing this song in my car while driving, rolling down the windows and singing as loud as I could. Good times.

...and then I saw the Saints!! Now I'm a believer, got the Who Dat Fever in the Superdome.

Another song I really got into that season was the Benson Boogie song that covered the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B by the Andrews Sisters. Here's an HBO Sports piece on the Benson Boogie from 1988 (which really doesn't belong in a 1987 history piece, but at least you can hear the song in it).

I'll admit right here and now that I am an absolute maniac who loved and loves everything that I even remotely associated with the Saints in the Fall of 1987. Just listen to these cheesy songs that I know EVERY WORD OF...and when coupled with those highlights, I absolutely swoon.

OK, Hans. Good to know. (smiling nervously while backing away slowly while maintaining shaky eye contact...)

UPDATE: Sunday, June 16, 9:35 am eastern time - While in the shower this morning, it hit me that there is one more sweet, sweet song that came out as a Saints tribute song in 1987 (and I'm just realizing that this echoed hard in the 2009 season with tribute songs, too. There's just something about associating music with success like you've never seen and then it enhances the sensory/emotional memory...) Saints Go, All The Way by Harrison Avenue. I was just quoting it in another thread...the Prologue, perhaps, but then forgot it when finishing this post last night. Anyway, this song also gets my heart racing, and I can remember seeing this song along with highlights from 1987 in the pre-youtube days, and it was a big part of that glorious season, too.

My search did not turn up any vids with 1987 highlights, but I did get this one with 2009 highlights...

and then one with the 2009 Unknown Who Dat...

Wow, Hans. Just wow.

Meanwhile, back in New Orleans after a two-game West Coast swing, 67,639 showed up to watch the Saints beat the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Eric Martin caught a fourth quarter touchdown, and the Saints won 23-14. And again, Ralph, the defense picked off an opposing quarterback FIVE TIMES. Jeff Rutledge has never seen CMFers like that again in his life. And with the exception of the 2009 Saints, neither have we, Ralph. BOX SCORE

With that victory, the Saints had gotten to 7 wins in 10 games, and since the 1987 strike season would have only 15 games, it meant a winning season was within their grasp (and with six games left to play in the regular season, to boot!!).

Next up were the Steelers. Pittsburgh was a lot better in 1987 than I remembered, Hans. They went 8-7 that year, which was decent, but since they were in the post-Terry Bradshaw Era and near the end of Chuck Noll's reign, this paled in comparison to the dominant Steeler Super Bowl teams of the 1970's.

The Saints used a goal line stand and a late Dave Waymer interception to seal a 20-16 victory and the winning season. It was only fitting that Waymer, a member of the 1-15 1980 team, would be the one to lock it up. BOX SCORE

Hans, and everyone else who reads this story, please at least watch the beginning of the video of THAT WHOLE GAME that is posted over at Saints Report, and then you all will certainly agree with me that the 1980's had the best game intro music ever. Better than Monday Night Football and better than Faith #$^& Hill. It's awesome and I want it as the ring tone on my phone.

At this point the city was insanity. In 1987 there was no Internet so there were only two ways to get your Saints fix; local news and the Times Picayune.

I'm not going to tell you 1987 was better than today. It wasn't. The Red Zone channel, fantasy football, Twitter, CSC comment threads, all these things make being a fan much easier and more fun but there was something really cool about devouring the sports section on Monday after a Saints win. Again I was 11 years old, and I love nostalgia...sue me.

Ralph, you are as right as rain about that. And that year was a great year to read the T-P sports on Mondays. Here's what greeted us in those pages for the NFC West standings on that Monday morning.

After that game, Ralph, the Saints were 8-3 and rolling as the NFC's top Wild Card team (and mush to fans' chagrin, 8-3 would have tied them for the best record in the whole of the AFC), with the first winning season in team history already sewn up, and three of their final four games at the Dome.

While they had picked up a game on the damn 49ers since losing to them in Week 6, those a**holes still led the NFC West, so the Saints had plenty of work to do, but things were looking up!

We will get to all that and more in Chapter 3 of Who Dat History: The 1987 Season - The Promised Land.

Hans, sing us out, ok? And no googling the lyrics.

No problem, Ralph! I thought you'd never ask...

He was an auto dealer from New Orleans way.

Who made it big in Texas selling Chevrolets.

And then he bought a football team, so he could realize one of his biggest dreams.

He's a dancer now, in the NFL, and he does the Benson Boogie on the football field.

He doesn't hold a candle to Fred Astaire.

But if the Saints are winning he'll jump in the air.

And then he'll boogie all around,

And hug a player or two before he falls on the ground.

He's a dancer now, in the NFL, and he does the Benson Boogie down on Bourbon Street.

The St. Louis Rams signed former Raiders safety Matt Giordano on Friday and subsequently cut rookie free agent safety Don Unamba, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Giordano will be playing for the sixth team of his NFL career since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He was a part of the Colts' Super Bowl run in 2005.

The signing of Giordano makes it even less likely that the Rams will re-sign safety Quintin Mikell, a 32-year old who spent two seasons in St. Louis after beginning his career with the Eagles.

Unamba, meanwhile, will have a chance to latch on with another team before training camp. The former Southern Arkansas defensive back set a school record for pass breakups in a season with 17 as a senior.

Rams rookies will report to training camp on July 21, while veterans will report on July 23.

With two positions left to rank, I've probably reached the two most controversial outside of the quarterback position: outside linebacker and defensive line. I'm running into issues with these two positions because, simply put, the teams in the NFC West run different defenses and their outside linebackers all do different things.

More rankings: Wide Receiver Tight End Offensive line Quarterback Running Back Linebackers Cornerback Safety Special Teams

So we get down to questions like "Who does what they're asked to do better than the other guys?" I think I've done an alright job of answering this question below. When I simplify it to that level the rankings actually weren't that difficult to me. Maybe we'll do a be-all, end-all "Who has the best front seven?" post, but I think we all know (Spoiler Alert!) the San Francisco 49ers will top that list.

Anyway, onto the rankings.

1. San Francisco 49ers with Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, Corey Lemonier, Cam Johnson

Aldon Smith was a contender for defensive player of the year for much of last season. He's developed into one of the NFL's premier pass-rushers, and entirely too much attention was paid to his late-season slump when Justin Smith went down to injury. Simply put, Aldon was injured as well, and there's not much else to it.

They also have the second best outside linebacker in the division in Ahmad Brooks. This made the decision to put the 49ers at No. 1 very easy. They have the No. 1 and No. 2 inside linebackers in the NFL, and the No. 1 and No. 2 outside linebackers in the division. Three of San Francisco's top four linebackers -- including both outside linebackers -- ranked among the top five of their position by Pro Football Focus last season. Easy choice.

2. St. Louis Rams with Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Alec Ogletree, Josh Hull, Jabara Williams

Spoiler alert: Jo-Lonn DUnbar was better than any Seattle outside linebacker last season, by a decent margin. Dunbar put up 115 tackles, 24 assists, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He played all over the field and has a bright future in the NFL, to be sure. He's very much like Seattle's K.J. Wright -- only better.

Alec Ogletree should be a starter opposite Dunbar, and while he's an unknown commodity, I think it was wise for the Rams to spend the high pick. James Laurinaitis has struggled in the middle at times, but with extra help on the outside, I expect him to have a big year. Ogletree and Dunbar make for one of the most athletic 4-3 outside linebacker pairings in the league.

3. Seattle Seahawks with K.J. Wright, Korey Toomer, Malcolm Smith, Heath Farwell

It's unclear who the starter will be opposite K.J. Wright at this point. Seattle will probably make a point to get more of their new toys on the defensive line on the field as opposed to the guy opposite Wright, but either Toomer or Smith should still see plenty of time on that side.

Wright has developed really well and could be on the cusp of breaking out into being one of the league's best outside linebackers. For now, Dunbar has the better stats and is basically just a better version of Wright, but he's really not far behind at all. He can tackle, he can rush the passer from time to time and he can cover very well. I'd take him.

As far as the other side, the position might actually benefit from one of these other guys stepping up. Leroy Hill has pretty much been status quo and while neither Toomer nor Smith are "sexy" picks, they haven't gotten much of a chance, either.

4. Arizona Cardinals with O'Brien Schofield, Sam Acho, Lorenzo Alexander, Alex Okafor

The Arizona Cardinals actually have a pretty decent situation at linebacker overall. But the outside in particular has some glaring issues. Among those issues: O'Brien Schofield still isn't healthy and Sam Acho looked sub-par at times last year. Acho looked best when he lined up as a defensive end.

Lorenzo Alexander is an interesting addition, because the Cadinals plan on giving him significant playing time. I personally believe that Alexander will be good, but he did his best work on special teams in Washington, not lined up in the base defense. Who knows how Okafor will make the transition to OLB at this point?

The St. Louis Rams added a veteran safety to the mix on Friday afternoon. Matt Giodano signed a free agent deal with the club, according to Jim Thomas.

Giordano played in 16 games with the Raiders last season, staring 13. He had two interceptions, five pass breakups and 36 total tackles. Unfortunately, he also missed nine tackles, according to Pro Football Focus, which was the third most on the team. He took his snaps at free safety, and works better in coverage.

A fourth-round pick by the Colts in 2005, Jeff Fisher and Chuck Cecil no doubt have some memories of playing against him from their time in the AFC South. He was mostly a special teams guy and a backup prior to joining the Raiders, because Raiders.

The question now is whether or not Giordano will start with the Rams. Darian Stewart and Rodney McLeod were vying for the other starting safety job, opposite rookie T.J. McDonald. It's quite possible that Giordano could win out in camp. That won't sound very reassuring given the concerns the team has at the position headed into the season.

Undrafted free agent safety Don Unamba was released to make room for Giordano on the roster.

The Rams kicked the tires on several veteran safeties recently. They did the same with a group of linebackers, including former Ram, Will Witherspoon.

The NFL isn't going to let you bring bags or purses or backpacks or fanny packs or pretty much anything else into stadiums anymore. It's a curious move for a league that's been doing a lot of public handwringing about game day attendance.

Fans didn't respond well to the news either. And why should they? Women will have to leave purses in the car, a dicey proposition in a place like St. Louis where break-ins are pretty much the city's chief economic engine. Taking the kids to game? Hope you don't need a diaper bag, because that's verboten under the new rules.

The Rams sent out a boiler plate press release from the league explaining the change in policy on Thursday afternoon. It's a safety measure, designed to to expedite the process for getting long lines through bag check and into the games. Probably not a bad way to minimize anyone trying to bring outside food and drink into the game either.

I get it. Safety is a priority at large events like this. I'm not totally sure we really need a bag check, but I do understand the effort to minimize the hassle.

On the other hand, fans just got more incentive to stay home, cook a big spread of better and cheaper food and watch the entire NFL play in Hi-Def surrounded by your family and friends. I know what my choice would be.

Taking your family to the game is already a monumental and very expensive ordeal. Your $500 day at the Dome just got harder now that the NFL doesn't let you to bring those essential support bags into the games.

The NFL has the top product in pro sports. From revenue sharing to television broadcasts to league parity, it's a really sound model. However, the shortsightedness from 345 Park Ave. is amazingly short-sighted sometimes.

Compared to the league's unwillingness to acknowledge the long-term impact of head-trauma and Roger Goodell's courageous stand on behalf of a persecuted minority like Dan Snyder, the new bag policy feels relatively minor. At least until owners start feeling the effects of it at the gate on Sundays this fall.

You can still bring small, clear bags into games. And the NFL is happy to sell you those, as the press release points out.

Here's the full text of the release:

To provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite fan entry into the Edward Jones Dome, the Ramsannounced today an NFL policy that limits the size and type of bags that may be brought into the stadium.

The NFL Committee on Stadium Security in May unanimously recommended the implementation of this measure that will enhance public safety and make it easier for fans to gain access in all stadiums. It was discussed with all clubs at the May league meeting and will be implemented at all NFL stadiums beginning with preseason games.

The TEAM strongly encourage fans to not bring any type of bags, but outlined today what is permissible. Fans will be able to carry the following style and size bag, package, or container at stadium plaza areas, stadium gates, or when approaching queue lines of fans awaiting entry into the stadium:

Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12." (Official NFL team logo clear plastic tote bags are available through club merchandise outlets or at nflshop.com), or

One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).

Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap, may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options.

An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, seat cushions, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size.

For additional information, go to NFL.com/allclear.

Fans will continue to be able to enjoy their tailgate activities in the parking lots and to do so with greater safety and the knowledge that their entry into the stadium will be smoother and faster.

In recent years the TEAM has enhanced its already comprehensive safety plans with the additional measures such as pat downs, bag checks and metal detectors.

"Our fans deserve to be in a safe and secure environment," said Jeffrey Miller, NFL vice president and chief security officer. "Public safety is our top priority. This will make the job of checking items much more efficient and effective. We will be able to deliver a better and quicker experience at the gates and also provide a safer environment. We appreciate our fans' cooperation."

This public safety measure is being successfully used at other large venues. The University of Michigan, Penn State University and Michigan State University do not permit any bags, while the TD Garden in Boston only permits clutch bags.

Working personnel, including media, will continue to enter NFL stadiums through designated gates where they will be subject to screening and bag inspections already in effect at all stadiums.

Below are some frequently asked questions regarding the NFL's new policy:

Why did the NFL and its clubs adopt this policy?

The league and clubs review their public safety and stadium security policies every year looking for ways to improve them. The Committee on Stadium Security and Fan Conduct leads this review and obtains a wide range of information to assist in doing so. The committee strongly believed that it made sense to adjust our policy to enhance public safety and make stadium access more efficient by limiting the size and style of bags carried into the stadium. This was reviewed with the clubs at the May league meeting and will be implemented by every team.

This proactive measure both will enhance safety inside and outside the stadium and speed the security screening process for all NFL fans. The public deserves to be in a safe, secure environment. This is about both safety and improving the overall fan experience.

Was this step taken because of what happened at the Boston Marathon?

That was a factor to take into account, certainly, but we update and improve the policy every year. It has evolved so that we can continue to adjust to the realities of public safety. We had been discussing a new approach to bag restrictions before the Boston Marathon incident. We have come up with a way to do it that will actually make access more convenient for fans than it has been. We think the fans will embrace and appreciate it.

Are other events limiting bags?

Yes. In fact, some like the University of Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State University do not permit any bags, while the TD Garden in Boston only permits clutch bags. The pat downs and metal detector screenings of all individuals entering NFL stadiums provide an additional level of safety for fans. The limitations on bag size and style is a further enhancement for convenience and safety.

How does the new policy improve public safety?

There will be a secondary perimeter around the stadium where security personnel will check for prohibited items or bags being carried toward the stadium so those situations can be corrected immediately. This establishes a protected buffer area for fans in plaza-level areas and at the queues for stadium entry. Prohibited bags will be turned away. Any prohibited bag inside the second perimeter will be highly visible and more quickly resolved.

The clear bag is easily and quickly searched and greatly reduces faulty bag searches. It also supports the Department of Homeland Security's "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign.

How does this make it more convenient for fans?

This will enable us to move fans through our security check points much faster. A standard size bag eliminates the need for bag templates to check bag sizes. It will make the stadium's job much easier, allowing staff to be more efficient and effective in checking bags that are brought into the stadium. There will be less time spent standing in lines at the stadium gates and fans will be able to be in their seats well before kickoff. Fans also will enjoy an improved sense of safety. Shorter lines mean fewer hassles.

Will teams be making money from selling team identified bags to fans?

There are a variety of options, including a clear 12" by 6" by 12" bag with no commercial identification or an inexpensive Ziploc bag. In addition, fans may carry their own small clutches. For fans who wish to purchase team logo bags, they will be available. [Teams that are giving away bags can insert language in this answer.]

How many bags can each person bring into the stadium?

One large clear bag - either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or the 12" by 6" by 12" clear bag - plus a small clutch. The larger clear bag must be a standard 12" by 6" by 12" made of clear PVC vinyl and is easily searched. The one-gallon Ziploc bag is readily available, inexpensive and easily searched. The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and also is easily searched.

Can fans carry cameras, binoculars, smart phones or tables separately from what they put in a clear bag?
Yes. Binoculars or a phone or camera can be carried into the stadium so long as it is not in its own bag. This is not a restriction on items that fans have been able to bring into the stadium. It is only a restriction on the type of container used to carry items.

Are seat cushions allowed to be carried into the stadium?
No, they are not due to the large size and because the way seat cushions are constructed would allow them to be used to conceal a potential explosive device.

What about bringing blankets in cold weather?

Fans will be able to bring blankets by tossing them over a shoulder or arm as they do in Green Bay. They can be easily screened carrying a blanket into the stadium.

Why haven't more stadiums and arenas adopted this kind of policy?

The NFL is the only professional sports league that has a comprehensive set of best practices for stadium security certified by the Department of Homeland Security as anti-terrorism technologies under the United States Safety Act. As such, other professional sports leagues look to the NFL as the leader in stadium and large venue security. Other stadiums have watched the NFL closely and followed, to the extent possible, security enhancements pioneered by the NFL. We anticipate that many more stadiums and arenas will soon adopt this policy.

What happens if I show up at the gate with a bag that is not permitted?

Fans carrying bags that do not meet the criteria will be turned away from the stadium well before they reach the gates. Stadiums are encouraged to maintain an ample supply of clear plastic tote bags or clear plastic freezer bags to afford guests the opportunity to transfer their belongings to an approved bag before they approach the stadium. As an alternative for guests that have no other option, stadiums are encouraged to consider providing the opportunity to temporarily check non-compliant bags at a facility located well outside the bag-restricted area.

Aloha Friday, Gang Green Gangsters! Here are your daily New York Jets links for today...

Let's start off with some bad news for Scott Salmon: fans are no longer allowed to bring fanny packs into NFL stadiums.
