National Football League

New England Patriots vs. New York Jets - 8:20 p.m. (TV/Radio: NBC/98.5 FM): A Thanksgiving full of NFL action will be capped off with a battle between AFC East rivals. The Patriots have taken a three-game lead in the division thanks to a four-game winning streak, which started with a 29-26 victory over the Jets on Oct. 21. In order to extend that streak to five, the Patriots will need to get past the Jets without the services of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who suffered a broken forearm in last week's blowout win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Houston Texans vs. Detroit Lions - 12:30 p.m. (TV: CBS): The AFC's best team takes on one of the league's most disappointing clubs to open the Thanksgiving NFL slate. Two of the league's top six offenses will be featured in the game. The 4-6 Lions hope to put an end to an eight-game Turkey Day losing streak, but it won't be an easy task against the 9-1 Texans.

Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys - 4:25 p.m. (TV: FOX): Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III returns to his home state for the first time since finishing his college career at Baylor. Griffin and the 'Skins face a Cowboys team that can move into a tie for first place in the NFC East with a win paired with a New York Giants loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

The revelation that follows is predictable and disappointing, but since we made a big deal of what happened to Joel Ward during the Stanley Cup playoffs earlier this year, it wouldn't be fair to let this pass without making a note of it.

Redskins receiver Joshua Morgan said he received death threats on Twitter after his costly 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in a 31-28 loss to St. Louis. Morgan's penalty forced the Redskins into a 62-yard field goal attempt that Billy Cundiff missed wide right.

LaRon Landry Doesn't Respect Anyone With The Redskins, It Seems

We usually don't spotlight former D.C. athletes in this space, but we'll make an exception when a player categorically rips his former team the way LaRon Landry did in this New York Daily News feature which ran over the weekend.

Apart from giving us the wonderful quote "I like unique s---," which we plan to use at every conceivable opportunity, Landry also uses the piece to say things about the Redskins like this:

(The Redskins) had people who just had the job title, but not the passion for their job. . . . I don't respect the training staff at all. I don't respect the coaches over there. I don't respect (Shanahan).

Daily News Jets beat writer Manish Mehta at least has the decency to point out that Landry refused to undergo team-recommended surgery and missed a total of 15 games in 2010 and 2011. Now in his sixth NFL season, Landry hasn't played a 16-game regular season since 2008.

You can back Landry to rejuvenate himself in New York if you like. But just in case he doesn't, this piece could serve as a handy printout for schadenfreude purposes.

NFC West Gives Strong Showing, Goes Undefeated In Week 2

After two weeks in the 2012 season, the NFC West is doing a good job of shedding its reputation for being the league's worst division. All four teams -- the Cardinals, 49ers, Seahawks and Rams -- all won in Week 2. All are showing off great or improved defenses. In fact, by the year's end, between San Francisco, Arizona and Seattle, the division might have three defenses in the top 10 of the league.

As the standings go, Arizona and San Francisco sit atop the division, both with 2-0 records. However, the Rams and Seahawks are only a game back as both sit at .500 with a 1-1 record.

Arizona Cardinals Shock New England Patriots 20-18 As Gostkowski Misses Game-winning FG - Revenge of the Birds
No one believed it could happen, but the Arizona Cardinals went into Foxborough and defeated the New England Patriots 20-18 by a strong performance by the Arizona defense, a passing touchdown and a running touchdown by Kevin Kolb and a Stephen Gostkowski missed field goal at the end of the game.

Seahawks Win 27-7 With Strong 2nd Half - Field Gulls

The Seahawks beat the Cowboys Sunday afternoon using the formula that Pete Carroll has unflinchingly endorsed since the day he arrived in Seattle. Relentless in the rush game, stingy on defense against the rush; strong special teams, discipline; force turnovers, win the turnover battle and time of possession game; employ a methodical, consistent offense that utilizes an explosive play here and there to keep the defense honest; 'finish strong' by playing your best football in the 2nd half.

49ers Vs. Lions: Defense, Timely Offense Key 49ers To Victory - Niners Nation

Well, then. The 49ers improved to 2-0 Sunday evening as they handled their business and leave Candlestick Park with a 27-19 victory over their media-made nemesis, the Detroit Lions. In reality the game should never have really been this close. Alex Smith was 20 of 31 for 226 yards, but seven of those incompletions were drops. There will be drops in every game, but there were several ugly drops. They convert a few of those drops and the 49ers potentially win this game by three scores.

Rams Stop RGIII In 31-28 Win - Turf Show Times

Fitting that the St. Louis Rams mounted an iron-willed comeback on the same day they set a new record for fake mustaches in one place in homage to Jeff Fisher. Fitting that less than a week after the local newspaper trolled fans with the question of whether or not the home team should have dumped Sam Bradford and drafted Robert Griffin III. The St. Louis Rams led by Jeff FIsher played one of the best football games at the Dome in a decade, beating RGIII and the Redskins in a come-from-behind 31-28 win.

That's The Sam Bradford The St. Louis Rams Drafted

This past offseason was not kind to Sam Bradford. The St. Louis Rams were told by their fans, at various times, to atone for giving their franchise quarterback David Carr Syndrome; to draft him a bunch of wide receivers and offensive linemen and give him one more chance; to admit to the mistake they made and start looking elsewhere; and even, in the run-up to the 2012 NFL Draft, to just give up and start over with Robert Griffin III.

Sunday, Sam Bradford beat Robert Griffin III head to head. While the Rams' young defense hounded RG3 at every opportunity, Bradford calmly picked the Redskins apart, relying heavily on an outstanding performance from Danny Amendola in the first half and then looking everywhere in the second. He finished 26-for-35 with 310 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

He did all that, even, while Steven Jackson sat on the bench for the entirety of the second half. The Rams aren't suddenly contenders, and Sam Bradford isn't suddenly a top-tier NFL quarterback. But on Sunday the Rams, for the first time in a while, saw for an entire game the quarterback who they drafted back in 2010.

When you come right down to it, the job of an NFL official is pretty simple: Enforce the rules that protect the players and the integrity of the result, while simultaneously keeping the emotions of players under control. Difficult task? Sometimes. Impossible? Not at all.

Sunday evening, after the Washington Redskins had lost 31-28 to the St. Louis Rams, just about every Redskins player who found himself in front of a microphone thought the officials had failed to do their job.

The St. Louis Rams And The World's Happiest Man

The St. Louis Rams aren't very good. That's sort of an obvious thing to say. But they're pretty lucky in one respect. No matter how miserable their season may be, they will count the world's happiest man among their ~~many~~ fans. On Sunday, the world's happiest man was made even happier when his party was tossed a touchdown ball. See the infectious mirth for yourself after the jump.

After the Rams scored a second-quarter touchdown against the Washington Redskins (and were still losing), this happened. Luckily enough for us (and for the world), it was caught on camera.

The happiness! The elation! The unbridled glee! Thanks, Chuck Norris!

Steven Jackson Has The St. Louis Rams' Carries; Can He Do Something With Them?

If Steven Jackson proved nothing else last Sunday, he did show all his doubters that he's still the St. Louis Rams' No. 1 option. Jackson took 21 carries for the Rams against the Detroit Lions--out of the 23 the team had--and caught four balls while he was at it. Isaiah Pead was basically invisible. Unfortunately, he was awful; the Lions stuffed him for just 53 yards, and his silence left the Rams' offense moribund until the Sam Bradford they drafted back in 2010 made a sudden cameo in the fourth quarter.

The Lions, facing the 49ers on Sunday, were gunning for him. But the Redskins will do the same thing on Sunday, unless Sam Bradford can push them out; when facing a Jeff Fisher team it's generally a good idea to gun for the big running back unless forced to do something else. And Jackson will also have to deal with the loss of free-agent center Scott Wells, whose fractured foot will cost him a third of the season.

So one question from the offseason is answered: Steven Jackson is still the No. 1 running back, and rookies Isaiah Pead and Daryl Richardson won't fit right into the offense right away. But now we have a new question: Does Steven Jackson want the carries, when they come like this?
