NHL Draft 2012: Florida Panthers Select Mike Matheson With No. 23 Pick

With the 23rd pick of the 2012 NHL Draft, the Florida Panthers have selected Mike Matheson, a defenseman from Dubuque of the United States Hockey League

A native of Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Matheson was ranked 30th among North American skaters by NHL Central scouting. Considered an "effortless" skater, the 6'1" defender lead Dubuque in scoring by defensemen and was tied for sixth overall on the club. He has committed to Boston College and will begin classes in the fall. His major issue is his size, given that he has yet to put bulk onto his frame at just 175 lbs.

Matheson also has received some international exposure, playing with both Team Canada at the Ivan Hlinka U18 tournament and Team Quebec at the U17 World Hockey Challenge, where he collected two goals and six assists in eight games.
