The Washington Capitals kept their season-opening five-game winning streak alive in a thorough domination of the Florida Panthers Tuesday night, riding goalie Tomas Vokoun to a shutout victory, 3-0, in D.C.
The Capitals continue to get their scoring from players other than their two stars, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, as Jason Chimera scored his fourth goal in five games, on an empty net, and Marcus Johansson scored his third. Backstrom and Ovi each notched assists, but no one could have predicted that Chimera and Johansson would each have more goals than the Caps' stalwarts.
Vokoun and the Caps' defense, however, were the true story of Tuesday night's win. Vokoun only needed to fend off 20 shots, and didn't let a single one slip by in helping the Caps to their first 5-0-0 start in franchise history.
Meanwhile, the Panthers slipped to 3-2-0, a start that Panthers fans must be satisfied with, especially considering nobody's beating the Capitals right now. Goalie Jacob Markstrom was actually terrific despite the loss, blocking 29 of the 31 shots he faced, but the offense just couldn't provide him with any support in the loss.
