Oilers Vs. Flames Score: Calgary Wins After Scoring Twice In Final Period

Stay connected with SB Nation

After Tom Gilbert scored for the Oilers on a power play in the opening period, the Flames were unable to answer for most of the following two periods. But with six minutes left in the game, Jay Bouwmeester finally found the back of the net, and barely a minute and a half later, Alex Tanguay's wrist shot off a rebound broke the tie and guaranteed Calgary's fans could go home happy. The two goals were the first of the season for Bouwmeester and Tanguay.

After the game, Gilbert was understandably disappointed that this one got away. "That's why it's a 60-minute game," he said, according to NHL.com. "That's frustrating. We played well enough in the third to win that game. We have to bear down when it comes to crunch time with minutes ticking down in the third period."

Flames goalie Mikka Kiprusoff beared down after the first period, finishing the game with 24 saves on 25 shots. Devan Dubnyk, meanwhile, stopped 26 of 28 for the Oilers, including Jarome Iginla's breakaway attempt in the second period.

The Flames improved to 2-3-0 on the season, and while they're still mired in last place in the Northwest Division, they're only two points out of second place. The Oilers, tied for third in the division, fell to 2-2-1.
