The Montreal Canadiens were seemingly spurred by the firing of assistant coach Perry Pearn this week. The Habs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 Wednesday night without their power play coach behind goals from Mike Cammalleri, Andrei Kostitsyn and Yannick Weber, and two from Max Pacioretty. Now at 2-5-2, the Habs will head to Boston to take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins.
The champs are off to an auspicious start, with a 3-5 record so far this season. Tim Thomas hasn't quite looked like the goaltender who won the Vezina and Conn Smythe trophies last season, but he has been close, turning in a solid 2.16 goals-again average. He is coming off a rough outing in which he allowed three goals against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, however.
It's still early, but no doubt both teams would like to get themselves out of the basement of the Northeast Division sooner rather than later, starting Thursday night.
