Don Cherry Comments Condemned By CBC

Don Cherry made waves on Thursday night, when during his Coach's Corner segment on CBC's opening night coverage, he berated the NHL for their crackdown on dangerous hits. He also tore apart a number of former NHL enforcers, calling them "hypocrites" for worrying about the mental health of fighters in today's NHL.

On Saturday, just hours before Cherry was set to go on the air during the first intermission of Saturday's Hockey Night In Canada coverage, CBC distanced itself from Cherry's vitriolic opinions.

"While we support his right to voice that opinion, we do not share his position," [CBC VP Kirstine] Stewart said in the statement.

"Player safety is a top priority for CBC, and we support the initiatives of the NHL and others in keeping players safe on and off the ice."

Given the outcry over what Cherry had to say, it's no surprise that CBC released a statement in this manner. At the same time, they've also assured that Coach's Corner will be must-see TV on Saturday night. So that'll be interesting.
