NHL Winter Classic 2012: Philadelphia Flyers Face Tough Decision On Starting Goaltender

The Philadelphia Flyers have one of the most important games of the season scheduled for Monday when they face the New York Rangers in the now-annual NHL Winter Classic. Flyers coach Peter Laviolette has an important decision to make over the weekend regarding the game, too, as he tries to decide whether to start Sergei Bobrovsky or Ilya Bryzgalov in goal.

The team's starting goaltender has been a point of contention all season, but Frank Seravelli wasn't able to get any inside tips when he wrote about the situation on Friday.

Does Laviolette go with his $51 million man in the most visible NHL game of the season? Or does he go with his best statistical chance to win for a game that counts in the already tight standings?

Yesterday, when asked before the game what was more important, a win or "not hurting anyone's feelings," Laviolette's answer was direct and simple.

"The only thing that really matters is to get the two points," Laviolette said.

It'll be interesting to see whether Laviolette decides to ride the hot hand or go with the guy the team is paying big money to defend his team's goal, but that decision doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon.
