Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for a hit on Carolina Hurricanes' player Alexei Ponikarovsky during the third period of Wednesday's game.
Sutton has been offered the option of an in-person hearing, no word yet on whether or not he will seek it.
The NHL suspended Sutton for five games earlier this season for a hit to the head of Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog during an Oct. 28 game.
SB Nation's Oilers blog, The Copper & Blue, was prepared for the suspension based on the severity of the hit.
There's no doubt about the intent of this hit. The 6'6" Sutton left his feet to make the hit and aimed directly for Ponikarovsky's head. Sutton was whistled for a two-minute boarding minor, but I'm in agreement with Ray Ferraro in the clip above, I have no idea how he avoided a major and a game misconduct in that situation.
C&B predicted that Sutton would be dealt an 8-10 game suspension. Turns out it could be even worse.
