Okay, you wanna talk injury ravaged, New York? You've got nothin' on Pittsburgh. The Penguins looked to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference and the NHL early on in the season, but after injuries to literally every center on their club, they've been left out to dry.
There's no doubt that they're still a good team that could make a good deal of noise in the playoffs, especially if Sidney Crosby can return to the lineup in time. It would take a monumental collapse to drop from the postseason, too. But there's no doubt that they need some help.
Status: Buyer
Needs: Forwards. Centers, in particular.
Players On The Block: Alex Goligoski ($1.833 million), Ben Lovejoy ($525,000)
Prediction: The season has been so incredibly wild (unlucky) in Pittsburgh that it's hard to see them shipping off too many young pieces in favor of rentals or short-term options up front. They'll look for help from a rental or a player with just a year left on his contract, but only if it comes at the price of a player like Goligoski, who despite showing flashes of brilliance, has been inconsistent and is essentially expendable.
Ray Shero has a lot of depth in the organization at defense, and that's where he'll look to move assets if he can gain a forward to help the team this season.
