Give the Florida Panthers credit: they might have some of the weirdest, most controversial promotions in major professional sports, but they certainly are creative and willing to make a splash. Their latest ad campaign, including what appears to be a new marketing slogan, is no different.
It's not a surprise to anybody that the NBA and the NFL are on the verge potentially not playing next season, although there's obviously still time for them to work that all out. Still, that's not going to stop the Panthers from trying to capitalize on what could be an open market come October (we don't think the Marlins are playoff-bound, do we?).
If you head to the Panthers website right now, this is what you see (click to enlarge):
"Next Season: Guaranteed!"
I have to admit: I don't hate this one bit. I love me some football (and yes, even some NBA basketball at times), but the NHL has a huge opportunity to regain a foothold in the collective conscience of the American sports fan. With no football and no basketball, what are people going to turn to in that lull between baseball season and, uh, baseball season?
Well, college sports, of course. But in terms of pro sports, it's possible that the Panthers are the only team in town next season. You can't blame them for getting out in front of that possibility, and I would expect more NHL teams to do the same as labor disputes continue in the NBA and NFL.
A few other thoughts here, though:
- Yes, you read that right. If you commit to season tickets for next season, you get free tickets to every remaining home game on the schedule this season.
