You don't often think about the market for a tough guy on NHL trade deadline day, but Zenon Konopka finds his name in the headlines this morning. The New York Islanders enforcer is more than just a bruised and battered face, though.
He's one of the best faceoff men in the entire NHL.
Several teams, including the Minnesota Wild, Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Canucks are rumored to be interested in Konopka, who ranks fifth in the league in the faceoffs department. That comes via TSN's Darren Dreger and Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
He has just seven points in 63 games this season with the Islanders on top of 224 penalty minutes, but those faceoff numbers are certainly good enough to get somebody to bite.
It's not as though he's useless, either. He was essentially a point per game player in both the ECHL and AHL, so while he's made his living in the NHL as a pair of hired fists, he could certainly figure into the goal scoring a bit if given the opportunity.
