Hurricanes Vs. Sabres: Hurricanes Get Closer To Playoff Race With 1-0 Win

The Carolina Hurricanes bring themselves to within two points of the eighth and final playoff spot with their 1-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. Brandon Sutter scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes within the final minute of the first period to give the Hurricanes the only goal they needed. The assists on the goal came from Derek Joslin and Chad LaRose.

Cam Ward was the story of the game as he made 42 saves in the shutout for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes were outshot all night, including a 22-13 first period, but Ward made some timely saves to keep the team in the game and ultimately win the game. Buffalo's Ryan Miller made 32 saves in the loss for the Sabres.

Neither team could convert on their powerplay chances, the Hurricanes had five while the Sabres had three. Both teams had a handful of shots on the powerplay but the goaltenders really dictated this game and stymied both offenses.

The Sabres will face the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday night at home while the Carolina Hurricanes will travel to Toronto to face the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. For more information on this game, please visit our Sabres site, Die By The Blade, and our Hurricanes site, Canes Country.

Hurricanes Vs. Sabres: Hurricanes Continue To Lead 1-0 Through Second

Brandon Sutter's goal in the first period is still the only goal of this game for either the Hurricanes and Sabres as the Hurricanes still lead 1-0 over the Sabres through two periods. The Hurricanes were not outshot as bad as they were in the first period but the Sabres did still outshoot Carolina 10-9 in the period and are outshooting them 32-22 for the game.

Cam Ward is still the player of the game making all 32 saves in the game and keeping the Hurricanes in the game thus far. Buffalo's Ryan Miller allowed the only goal of the game in the last minute of the first period and has 21 saves on the game. Both Tim Connolly and Jeff Skinner have five shots on goal for each team.

The Carolina Hurricanes are 21-1 when they are leading after two periods which is good for fifth in the league among winning percentage while the Sabres are 4-22-1 when they are trailing after two periods.

Hurricanes Vs. Sabres: Brandon Sutter Gives Hurricanes 1-0 Lead Through First

The Carolina Hurricanes have been outplayed for much of the first period in their matchup with the Buffalo Sabres but they still have the 1-0 lead thanks to a Brandon Sutter goal coming at the 19:17 mark of the first period. The assists on the goal came from Derek Joslin and Chad LaRose.

Cam Ward has been the star of the game thus far through the first period. The Sabres have outshot the Hurricanes 22-13 through the first period and Ward has made all 22 saves thus far in the period. Tim Connolly leads all players with four shots on goal while Jeff Skinner has three shots on goal for the Hurricanes.

Buffalo's Ryan Miller has made 12 saves on the 13 shots from the Hurricanes through the first. The Hurricanes are 20-16-8 when they are being outshot in the game while they are 9-11-2 when they are outshooting a team so this continued pace for the Hurricanes should bode well.

Hurricanes Vs. Sabres: Carolina Looks To Gain Ground On Playoff Spot

The Carolina Hurricanes are four points out of the playoff spot with 13 games left to play this season. The Buffalo Sabres are one of the teams that the Hurricanes are chasing, four points ahead of them with the same amount of games played. The Hurricanes and the Sabres last faced off on March 3rd where the Hurricanes defeated the Sabres 3-2 in overtime.

For the Sabres, the big news is the return of Drew Stafford in the lineup. This could be bad news for the Hurricanes because Stafford has seven goals and one assist, including two hat tricks, in games right after an absence in the lineup. Ryan Miller got the night off against the Senators so he will start in net for the Sabres.

For the Hurricanes, Jamie McBain will be out of the lineup for the Hurricanes for the next three to four weeks as he suffered a shoulder injury against the Washington Capitals on Friday. The Hurricanes are 0-3-1 in their last four games that has seen them fall down the Eastern Conference standings.

Game time is 7:30 pm and can be seen on Versus for all US viewers and TSN2 in Canada. For more information on this game please visit our Sabres site, Die By The Blade, and our Hurricanes site, Canes Country.
