Aggregated NHL Power Rankings, Week 25: Blackhawks, Canadiens Fall Hard

CHICAGO - OCTOBER 09: Duncan Keith #2 of the Chicago Blackhawks falls over teammate Marty Turco #30 and into the net during the Blackhawks season home opening game against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center on October 9, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. If Power Rankings provide us with a snapshot of how a team is doing, then this week's aggregated collection show that some teams are rising to the challenge of earning a playoff spot while other teams are letting things slide away.

Power rankings may not hold any clout in the actual standings but they do provide us with a snapshot of how a team is doing. And since teams only have a handful of games left, it's a pretty good indicator of whether or not a team is heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs in a position of strength or stumbling ass-backwards into a playoff spot.

The best judge of this is the week-to-week difference. After all, the original power rankings seem to already factor in-or-out positioning, so an aggregated perspective gives us a bigger picture of how observers feel teams are doing. And in the case of some teams, a drop of three or more spots is probably not a good thing. Here are this week's aggregated power rankings:

Rank Team Last Diff
1  Vancouver Canucks 1 0
2  Washington Capitals 3 1
3  San Jose Sharks 5 2
4  Philadelphia Flyers 4 0
5  Detroit Red Wings 2 -3

7  Boston Bruins 8 1
8  Phoenix Coyotes 6 -2
9  Nashville Predators 12 3

27  Ottawa Senators 28 1
28  Florida Panthers 27 -1
29  Colorado Avalanche 29 0
30  Edmonton Oilers 30 0

Noteworthy falls of teams in playoff positions: Detroit (and that's without factoring in the recent 10-3 blowout at the hands of St. Louis), Chicago, and Montreal. For the teams in the top five, lack of movement is a good thing, and the Penguins surge back to #6 says a ton about a team that weathered Sidney Crosby's concussion.

Now for conference breakdowns. First the Eastern Conference:

Most Consensus: Once again, the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers are at the top and bottom. After that, the Florida Panthers -- still near the bottom but not the very bottom -- bounced around the 27 and 28 spot. For teams in the middle of the pack, Montreal has the most amount of consistency.

Biggest Outlier: If we're not factoring TSN's formula system, the difference spread actually drops quite a bit. Seems like everyone holds roughly the same general opinion, though the Anaehim Ducks are ranked as high as 8th (CBS) and as low as 13th (Sportsnet).
