Glendale Council Vote Doesn't Guarantee On-Ice Success For Phoenix Coyotes

The Phoenix Coyotes will still exist in 2011-12 thanks to a vote by the City Council in Glendale, Ariz. on Tuesday night, just because they're staying in town for another year doesn't mean that they're in the clear when it comes to preparing for that new year.

The vote by City Council, which passed 5-2, is only an agreement of payment to the NHL to cover $25 million in expected operating losses in 2011-12. There's still the little issue of finding a new owner for the team, and if that doesn't happen by July 1, general manager Don Maloney is going to have a hell of a time finding free agents.

The fact of the mater is this though, Glendale approved the cash, but the team still faces an uncertain future. If there isn't a deal done by July 1 Don Maloney is going to be awfully hamstrung trying to re-sign players and bring in new talent. That in turn will cause another season in the stands like we saw this past year. That's something the team simply can't afford. the fanbase has basically been given a mulligan, and needs to get out to the arena win or lose. That's asking a lot and may not be realistic but it needs to happen. Though the alternative is just to get the deal done and frankly, I like that better.

There's a feeling of second life among Coyotes fans, but now, simply put, they need to use that second life and support their team like they've never supported them before.
