Sharks Vs. Canucks, Game 1: Thornton's Lone Goal Gives San Jose 1-0 Lead

Stay connected with SB Nation

Joe Thornton was able to capitalize on a Roberto Luongo miscue to give the San Jose Sharks a 1-0 lead through the first period.

The lone goal of the game thus far in the game came with 1:13 left in the first period on something that Luongo would gladly like to have back. Luongo went behind his own net to play the puck and instead of playing the puck to a teammate, the puck ended up on Joe Thornton's stick. Thornton easily put the puck into a wide open net.

The Canucks have been able to pressure Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi in this game, but Niemi has been able to handle the pressure thus far. The Canucks got the first good opportunity of the game within the first two minutes of the game, but Niemi made a good sliding save.

The Canucks are outshooting the Sharks in the first period by an 11-10 margin with Niemi making all 11 saves compared to Luongo's nine saves in the game thus far.
