R.J. Umberger will be staying in Columbus for quite some time. Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson continued his whirlwind offseason -- one that saw James Wisniewski and Jeff Carter join the club -- on Wednesday morning, signing the key forward to a five-year contract extension.
The extension goes into effect next season since Umberger has one more year left on his current deal, which pays him an average of $3.75 million per season. The new deal pays an average of $4.6 million per season: $5 million in year one and $4.5 million in the final four years.
Blue Jackets fans are pumped about the deal and about Howson's offseason in general, but most of all, they're psyched that he apparently wants to stay in Columbus for a long time.Via Blue Jackets blog The Cannon:
The most interesting news is that Umberger asked for (and received) a no trade clause for the first two years, and a modified NTC for the remaining 3 - a big statement of support for the direction of the franchise.
