Jody Shelley Suspended For Hit On Darryl Boyce

The Philadelphia Flyers will be without Jody Shelley for 10 games after the NHL reportedly took action in response to his hit during a preseason game on Wednesday. Shelley sent Darryl Boyce face-first into the boards, sparking a brawl during a preseason matchup between the Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 10 game suspension will not consist solely of regular season games, though. Nick Kypreos broke the news of Shelley's punishment and explained how it will all work.

#NHL news. #Flyers Shelly suspended 10 games. 5 pre-season and first 5 gms into the regular season.

As noted earlier, Brendan Shanahan took over as the NHL disciplinarian, and Shelley's hit served as the first major crisis he had to solve. So did Shelley's suspension send a message? Our Philadelphia Flyers blog, Broad Street Hockey, examined the punishment.

This is Shanahan's first case as discipline czar, and a five-game ban (or more) would indeed be a message. But frankly, Shelley deserves it. He's probably one of the nicest people in the Flyers locker room, but he's shown time and time again that he's not afraid to hurt people on the ice. (And that's just his one year in Philly so far.)
