It was pretty surprising Monday, walking into Citizens Bank Park, looking at the NHL Network set up with Kevin Weekes and Kathryn Tappen.... and, Barry Melrose? He's an ESPN guy, not an NHL Network guy.
But the eyes weren't fooling. There he was in the flesh, in all his mulleted glory.
The NHL announced after the Winter Classic press conference Monday that Melrose would be joining their club during major NHL events as a television analyst. He also joins NHL.com where he'll be blogging once a week in a video format. They're calling it "Melrose Monday." How adorable.
If you're wondering who's going to be replacing him on the television side on ESPN, though, stop while you're ahead. Melrose is joining the NHL's media empire only as a contributor. He's still staying with the Worldwide Leader In Everything Besides Hockey full-time.
