Despite allowing the Flyers to score the first two goals of the game, the Rangers rallied by scoring the final three, including two by Mike Rupp, to take the 2012 Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia by the score 3-2.
Brad Richards scored the game-winner at the 5:21 mark in the third, but the rest of the game wasn't without drama as the Flyers had a chance to tie in the final minute with a penalty shot, which was awarded when Ryan McDonagh covered the puck in the crease.
Flyers center Danny Briere took the shot and tried to go between Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist's legs, but he was denied. With just 19.6 seconds left on the clock, the Rangers survived Philly's final flurry to win the game.
After a scoreless opening period, Flyers center Brayden Schenn opened the scoring with his first goal of the year at thee 12:21 mark of the second period. Just two minutes later, Claude Giroux extended the Flyers' lead to 2-0, but it would take just half a minute for Mike Rupp to answer for the Rangers with just his second goal of the year. Rupp scored again at the 2:41 mark in the third period, setting up Richards' game-winner a few minutes later.
Lundqvist finished the game with 35 saves; Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, meanwhile, stopped 30 of 33.
The Flyers were without Jaromir Jagr for much of the game, as the veteran left the ice in the first period. He briefly returned early in the second period but then did not play the rest of the game, apparently due to an unannounced injury.
