On a busy Thursday night in the NHL, Detroit and Pittsburgh extended winning streaks, and the Bruins got a road win while the Flyers coughed one up at home.
On Thursday night in the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings continued their winning ways despite going to overtime, the New York Islanders rose up to down the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins cruised in Eastern Conference showdowns.
The Red Wings needed overtime to top the Phoenix Coyotes, 3-2. Jimmy Howard made 31 saves for Detroit, and didn't allow a goal after the second period, making two saves in the shootout (Winging It In Motown says the Coyotes weren't even close in the shootout round) and allowing Todd Bertuzzi to score the game-winner on the Red Wings' third shootout attempt. The Red Wings ran their winning streak to five games with the victory.
In Philadelphia, the lowly Islanders poured it on the Flyers, getting a 4-1 win over the team that currently sits fourth in the East. John Tavares had two assists for New York, and Lighthouse Hockey is pleased with Tavares' play.
The Penguins scored a 4-1 win over the East-leading New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, with Evgeni Malkin scoring two goals and the Penguins netting three in the third period, and ran their winning streak to four games. And the Bruins thumped New Jersey with a four-goal third period en route to a 4-1 win in Newark.
Elsewhere, the Flames topped the Kings in a shootout, 2-1; the Maple Leafs got a 4-1 win over the Wild; the Predators blanked the Blue Jackets, 3-0; the Blues got a 1-0 squeaker over the Oilers; the Senators beat the Sharks, 4-1; and the Jets notched a 4-1 triumph over the Sabres.
