The cities of Vancouver and Boston never exactly had a rivalry before June 2011, but man, they certainly hate each now. In the first meeting between the Bruins and Canucks since Boston won the Stanley Cup in Game 7 last season, it didn't exactly take long for the hatred to boil over.
In fact, it only took about four minutes.
We won't necessarily try to make sense of what's going on here. Just, uh, watch as four Canucks begin to pummel Shawn Thornton before all Hell breaks loose.
As you can see on the replay, it all started when Thornton gave Alex Burrows a tap as both players skated to the bench. Burrows then reached at Thornton like Hook McCracken. Thornton then reconsidered the entire "hey, I'm going to the bench" thing and came right at Burrows.
Henrik Sedin, Manny Malhotra and Kevin Bieksa all joined in, and then the Bruins found their way over... and well, that's how a line brawl happens. In all, at the 3:54 mark of the first period, the teams combined for 46 penalty minutes. Milan Lucic given 10 for leaving the bench, as he wasn't on the ice when the melee began.
That's what they call illegal, buddy. Marchand picked up a five minute major for clipping and a game misconduct. Salo didn't return to the Canucks bench after second intermission. On the ensuing power play, the Canucks scored two goals to take the lead. Good work, Brad.
