Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog signs to play in Sweden during NHL lockout

Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog has signed a two-month deal with Djurgardens in Sweden.

Colorado Avalanche forward and Calder Trophy winner Gabriel Landeskog has signed to play with Djurgardens, according to a release by the team.

The 2012 Rookie of the Year scored 22 goals and had 52 points in 82 games last season, his first in the NHL after two years with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL.

Djurgardens is a team in the Swedish Allsvenskan league, which is the second-highest-level hockey league in Sweden behind Elitserien. Djurgardens had been relegated to the Allsvenskan last season from the SEL.

Landeskog played in the Djurgardens system before heading to North America in 2009, scoring 7 goals and 21 points with the junior team in 31 games in 2008-09.

Per ESPN's Pierre Lebrun, the contract with Djurgardens is only a two-month contract, allowing the forward to return to the NHL at any time should the NHL lockout end.

Fellow Avalanche superstar Matt Duchene will also be playing in Sweden, signing a contract with Frolunda HC of Elitserien.
