The KHL is back in action Wednesday after taking a mid-season break. The last KHL game was Nov. 4.
There are 11 games on the docket Wednesday, including a significant contest between Avangard Omsk and Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Avangard enters the game with a 44 points and a 10-6 record in the East Division. Metallurg has 47 points and a 14-3 record.
Metallurg is led by Ottawa's Sergei Gonchar, Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin and Toronto's Nikolai Kulemin. Avangard has just one NHL player on its roster, Columbus' Nikita Nikitin.
Malkin, one of the bright young stars of the NHL, has been great in the KHL this season. In 18 games, Malkin has scored 28 points on the strength of 20 assists and eight goals. The 26-year-old forward is third in the league in points. His teammate, Sergei Mozyakin, is second in the league with 29 points.
